I think for the most part it's just low-quality posting because people don't care about the board very much. There's a few people actively trying to shit it up like the guy who's been posting the frog threads lately but most people just don't have anything worth saying and expect somebody else to make the board fun to read.

Objectively, from a pure activity point of view:
1. The Tamers one, mainly because they still get new content, I suppose. I tried to check it once, but it was full of circlejerking with charts made of the posters inside, so I fucked off. Don't know if they actually discuss the episodes or not.
2. /opg/, they're always super active. It feels like another community inside this community, but I don't know enough about it to talk. I dislike hubs that are too social like this so I can't say much.
3. /chag/, AI slop, but they do seem active solely on their subject. They got a boost with the release of an AI VN recently from what I saw. I can't say much more about them.
4. /fimfic/, I like it, but it's kept alive 90% by off-topic and circlejerking. The Sunday bookclub is nice.
There was /tf2/, but the activity seems to have fallen off recently.
Only /fimfic/ and /chag/ were active on the bunkers during the hacks btw. All other activites were dead.

From the rest of the generals, I'd still have /draw/, /bale/, and /mppp/ as standouts even if they aren't that active. /bale/ and /draw/ for obvious reasons and being motors for new contents, and /bale/ just because it's a service that does its job well.

It has gotten somewhat better the last few years, and thats because of threads like bale and tempo. We need a community focused around contribution culture and OC really badly. Necrobumps happen because people dont feel confident enough to bump a thread with actual content, even if poorly made. The fact so much of the board is about being divided, contrarian and hating shit is killing us fast.

Board gets balkanized, quality gets poorer (now a days often it is AI slop), which makes the board get more balkanized.

Making OC is like making a cake. Alot of anons here don't mind a cake thats a little shitty, the more cake the better. But the issue is that we spend so much time arguing, we arent making cake. The kitchen is almost entirely empty, half the bakers are selling cardboard models of cake (ai slop), the few others here in the pastry shop just come by to argue about how everything and everyone is terrible. Old content bad, new content bad. Board culture bad. This identity bad, that identity bad. Etc etc etc etc.
We have got to pull back from this and return to the old ways. The thing that made old Fandom spaces, like ours, work so well is that they were contribution cultures.
They didnt spend all their time saying no, they said "yes! And..."
What that means in this context is that, they were focused on making things. Especially things that were meaningful, even if they were a little retarded or cringe. Threads were bumped routinely with oc, even if only in the form of disucssion. This made us very powerful and is why we were able to get board staples like flutterrape.

What I disagree with is your idea that it's the sharty, or at least the sharty as a single entity, that is doing this. The sharty is essentially a breeding ground for hypersensitive spergs from various discord servers to collide with eachother and be emboldened to undergo some great internet crusade. I figure I make about 20 posts a hour on average. Consistently for three years, that's about 300,000 posts, conservatively. I posted very frequently a decade prior to the three years of becoming a hermit, but not to this extent. I'd like to think I'm hitting close to a million posts in the near future.
Sometimes, I post so much I forget who is and isn't me. Chances are, if you're a regular on /mlp/, you've spoken to a version of myself. Each time I make a successful meme or get a lot of (you)s, I save the image, print it out and frame it on my wall. I am surrounded by accomplishment.
