I paid for my room, plane tickets, badge and had some money left for food and vendor hall stuff with $1800 in my account. So two grand should be safe enough.
If you want to be a cheap fag, you could do it on a little under a grand but you'll find yourself fucked if you aren't careful. You could drive or split costs with someone too. If you only go to one con a year, two grand shouldn't be that difficult.

I immediately went through the ~$100 cash I had in my wallet on my first merch haul. There’s always the option of using the ATM and/or a credit card. Vendors prefer cash (and you should use it when you can), but most do accept cards. This year I put most of my purchases on credit. Just be careful not to get carried away and only spend what you can safely pay off soon. Overall my merch and food probably totaled up to $300 ish but I hardly ate anything and what I did eat was all from the mcdonalds nextdoor and the one meal I could get with the $15 mare supporter giftcard for the hotel.

I don't know what to do with myself now that mare fair is over. I don't want to go back to just playing vidya all day long. I wish the anni was sooner.

i live less than an hour from the rosen so transportation wasnt an issue. last year i spent only about $250-300 on merch and the badge. For the average person I'd say to bring $500 just for the vendor hall if thats all you wanna go for, but for the more "passionate" type id defintely say bring closer to $1k

At least for me, it's total avoidance, as ultimately we should be doing our best to avoid sinful behaviors. However, I won't deny that sexual sins are one of the biggest struggles for most Catholic men. I myself have - even if somewhat unintentionally - fallen to the sin of masturbation at least once, and kind of intentionally viewed fictional nsfw many other times.

However, God knows we aren't perfect creatures, and that we will have times of weakness. This is exactly why the sacrament of reconciliation exists. It gives us the opportunity to acknowledge our failures before Jesus, and ask Him to take the spiritual stain of those failings away from us (as, on the cross, He pays the price which we ourselves cannot pay).

As long as you're making the effort to practice chastity, you'll be doing fine in that regard. Failing may be bad, but as long as you desire to get back up and try again, then the Holy Spirit will be right there to help you.

Also, if you have concerns about the faith, talk to God about it. You do not already have to be part of a religion to pray; God may desire you to be in full communion with Him in the Church, but He's always willing to meet you where you're at. Ask Him for strength and guidance, and He'll show you the way to Him - even if it's not in the way you'd expect.

Additionally, if you're interested in learning how God has revealed Himself to us (aka, where we even derive our faith from), I'd highly reccomend checking out the Bible in a Year Podcast, hosted by Father Mike Schmitz. It's exactly what the title says: a 382 episode podcast that reads through the entire Catholic Bible - Genesis all the way through Revelation - with an explanation/commentary section in the second half of each episode (plus a few "time period introduction" episodes).

P.S.
As for *why* masturbation is considered sinful, it ties into the broader sexual ethics taught by the Church.
In short, the Church teaches that sexual acts are ordered towards both unity and procreation; to remove or one or both of those aspects is a perversion of the act. In other words, the sexual act should be an outwardly focused act, focused on uniting a husband and wife, and being open to the creation of new life.
Masturbation, obviously, eliminates both of those aspects, perverting it into merely a pleasure-seeking experience for the self.

There's a lot more to it beyond that, but as it's something I'm still trying to fully understand the logic on for myself, I'm not going to pretend I know all the answers. If you want to dig deeper, I'd recommend talking to a Catholic priest or theologian IRL; they can probably help direct you to the sources you need.

If you're curious about scriptural evidence for the church's teaching on sexual ethics, one strong piece of evidence that sticks out in my mind is a passage (I believe from Genesis) where a man is noted as having engaged in intercourse a woman, but "spilled his seed", rather than releasing it inside of her, and he is then struck down soon after. It's one of the rare times where the Bible outright states something is bad, rather than implying the morality of an action through showing its consequences.
(There's obviously other things in the bible that will point to why the church teaches what it does about sex, but that passage in particular sticks out for me so far.)

But after chatting with Fireking we got the idea of relatively cheap electronic ink billboards that could be updated on the fly. So not only would you have a list of parties, but the people running them could update the listing with what they're doing, when they're running, and how full they are. Hey, I think you have a neat thing going, and I wanted to share some of my honest, constructive thoughts. Cutting those pieces by hand certainly takes time and skill, and I completely respect that. I'm someone who works with an industrial laser cutter. Once I get the vectors drawn up, I can cut them out on the laser in a fraction of the time and with a much cleaner finish for a much lower cost. The point I'm getting at is it would be better to focus your merch endeavors on something that someone with a laser cutter couldn't do, something unique to the skill of welding. I recall that you had some welded sculptures your first year of Mare Fair. If you hone that craft, I think people would be much more willing to pay what your efforts are worth. I never let my soap bar touch the shower stream or get submerged in a bath for this reason. If you shower twice a day, or, other people use it the same day, it still might soak up enough water to ooze on to whatever surface its sitting on and partially dry over night.
I would recommend using a second bar of soap and swapping out which one is used.
Alternatively, you could felt your soap bar so when it starts oozing from lots of use, the felt fibers pick it up and very little soap is lost. The soap holder should be plenty big enough to include the felt or wool wrapped around the bar

To those of you that attended the wedding panel, I am sorry for mixing up and saying Derpy a lot. I mixed my PTS lines with the wedding lines. Thank you all for yelling at me.
To those of you that participated, thank you and I owe you all an apology. I know several of you had custom vows and other such things. But a lot of "on the day" sign ups happened and there were over 60 weddings for both panels. As for the rings I will be in touch in the next few weeks to get shipping addresses to pass on to my ring maker. He is very apologetic still.

Hey dude, Anon with the decade-old failed smithing business who was chatting you up for a while, here. You're getting a lot of good advice from this thread, the only one I would push back on personally is the armor idea. Well made and articulated armor, ESPECIALLY for something fragile like a plush, would be a nightmare to make and sell and you probably wouldn't get your investment back until after years of getting really good and efficient at it. That said, I wanna reiterate that I think it's great that you added this kind of variety to the vendor hall and I really want to encourage you to keep going. We all have bad events, bad years, etc. I think if you keep at it you've got a lot of potential. As you get more skilled, I think mlp-flavored recycled metal sculptures like pic rel would do real good, as well as just more refined stuff in general. You're working in a really hard medium to get started in but I hope I see you next year.

Oh if one can pull it off, yeah plush/sculpture armor would probably sell great. But it takes a LOT of work and practice, and arguably gets harder the smaller-scale you work. Of course it all depends on the gauge of steel you use, or if you even use steel at all, blah blah blah. Dude needs a lot more practice before he's going to be successfully selling armor at a price that feels like a halfway decent return on investment, that's all I'm saying. Better to start on simpler stuff and work your way up to something like that over a few years, especially if you want to stay motivated. Speaking from personal experience anyway; I'm sure some guys out there can just staple their balls to the workbench and practice to perfection from the start without burning out.

I'm not the least bit dissuaded. This is the most ive seen anons care about someone since tamers. Its an honor that all of you gave me feedback and memed on me for being a kike. I was urged by a bud who runs his own business that I shouldn't feel bad about how I price work given the hours put into them. He knows its hard for me, and I'm notorious for just making things and giving them away to coworkers for free. My efforts to assert myself with pricing at marefair was a failure because I'm not making my work efficiently. I had sold all my metal artwork at marefair 1 for 200, 300, and 400 bucks, so I was simply trying sticking to those prices. I will make art for 20,40, and 40 buck each, and in greater quantity and quality.
