>Glimmer does a better job at being twilight than twilight
This is true, as mares wanting to experience and learn friendship, Starlight does it better.
Twilight did not care about friendship at all until it fell into her lap through Celestia pulling her puppet strings. From then on it was mostly her academic curiosity driving her to learn more about friendship. Her interest in magic is secondary to her character, it's really just there as a plot device, merely symbolism for "friendship is magic".
Starlight always cared about friendship from the beginning, it's the one thing she cares most about, she was happiest whenever she was with her friend, the loss of that friend then creating relatable insecurities in her that shaped her life. Already this makes Starlight far more sympathetic out the gate, she didn't have a perfect life like Twilight had, Starlight had to suffer pain. And she didn't self-destruct like Moondancer, she used that pain as motivation to change society for the better, making her very admirable despite her misguided conclusions. That's another thing, Starlight saw magic as an extension of friendship, a boon to the world. Her joy in magic started with Sunburst, together she was able to do awesome feats because of their friendship. Our Town was only possible because of her magic, she likes learning practical spells that are useful like instant cakes. There is a connection between her love for magic and friendship. Twilight has NONE of this, she's as one-dimensional as it gets, a nepobaby with no personality coasting through life. Twilight only has one episode in the early seasons that makes her feel like a real person, Winter Wrap Up and it barely feels genuine because she didn't even care about fitting before seeing as she never attended the Gala.
