(minus of course the smokeless powder in the cartridge unless you could get a bug to sacrifice themselves entirely for the experiment to be burned in the process of firing)

My favourite headcanon is that skittlebugs are an evolutionary dead-end, and that just "share love" forever like some infinite food hack actually doesn't work in the long term. First of all because it's stupid - if changelings eat love, then producing love shouldn't possibly be free for them, and "sharing love" can't create new love out of thin air. Free infinite food duplication loop real(tm) is fucking retarded. And secondly because it gives Chrysalis a bit of extra character depth than just "she is so evil muahaha she kept her entire species on the verge of starving and hid the infinite free food hack from them just because lol lmao".

Changelings need love to feed, so changelings giving love should be a process that weakens them. One can imagine that changelings infiltrating pony society and living among ponies would probably give away some quantity of love regularly to be able to fit in better, but generally only in circumstances where they'd be able to get a return on their investment from ponies loving them more in return. Changelings living in the hive would probably not generally share love as a rule, except in times of extreme plenty and abundance, thus explaining the relatively harsh and hostile vibe of changeling society. And the skittlebug form twists the changelings so that their handling of love is more pony-like, and they're able to produce love for free, effectively giving the infinite food hack; but this isn't properly compatible with the nature of changelings - it also removes their ability to process love to create anything, only to maintain alive what already exists; so the population of skittlebugs is effectively sterile, they cannot reproduce or grow anymore.

To be fair in canon we only ever see changelings cocooning ponies, as far as I'm aware the whole "infiltrators subtly collecting love" is a purely fanon idea. As far as we know, the few times they get to cocoon ponies and violently drain them is the few times they've been able to feed in canon, otherwise they just exist and kinda sit there starving in the badlands. It's a children's cartoon, and they seem to operate on a logic of "big evil race of bad monsters that try to eat ponies (' love) occasionally" rather than a self-sustainable race. Kinda like some folklore about dragons, hydras, or various forest feys who attack a village and eat a few people once every few decades and just magically don't need to eat the rest of the time somehow despite being massive beasts. The closest we might see to "gradual love draining" is Chrysalis allegedly draining Shining, but Shining was a fucking mess as a result, and Chrysalis is the Queen. And she still didn't manage to pull off "subtly" draining Shining without any noticeable effects. Otherwise, it's always cocoon, cocoon, cocoon, and violent drainings that leave the victim nearly catatonic.

Anyway, all this to say that maybe they didn't actually share love, but rather they wanted to capture ponies so changelings could drain them individually. And failing this, the changelings would just exist as a fae race, simply existing as an ever-present malevolent force in the background, with lack of food making them hungry but the hunger just serving to make them more aggressive or dangerous than being any threat to their existence.

I've written a few stories about Queen Chrysalis, with many more planned, and I'm also the guy commissioning the weird artwork with her big translucent belly filled with live young, like the piece I posted. The piece of artwork I posted, with the changeling guard struggling to lift her rear off the ground, is based on the second story.

I haven't mentioned it lately, but I've got the story to a piece of artwork finished, which is planned to be the first chapter of an anthology about the queen and her many children. I've talked to the artist again recently, and it may be ready for Halloween after ten months of waiting, but I'm still trying to get another story finished just in case. Still, the timing here would be nice, I think, so the wait hasn't been all bad. If the artwork gets finished, and I finish this other story's first chapter on time, I'll post the anthology the day before this humanized Nightmare Night story.

I did tell the artist I was fine waiting a year, but I didn't expect it to be needed, kek. Let me praise Cold Blooded Twilight here: I asked him how much advance notice he needed to get this cover art done, and he told me a day; I believe him too. The guy's a fucking machine, with great prices, and he's never let me down.

I still like the human connection, and the unique art styles. I also like "prompting" an artist with my changes and, since he's an intelligent human being, I get what I want in the end. Here's an old screencap where I challenged a guy to generate something like this. I'd bet it still can't do a good job, even with the dozens of examples I've commissioned used as "training data" fed in.
