Pretty bad time for the question, pretty much all of the upcoming club fics are better off being picked for seasons theming than the equivalent of dubs.

It's kind of funny to me that I prefer to write shorter stories, so my commissions are going to end up my longfics in all likelihood. How's your writing going, guys? I've got a loop of commissions that's taking up most of my writing time now, and I just recently remembered the humanized story I planned for Nightmare Night. I still haven't started on my chapter of the group anthology.

I have a question.
I'm currently at a very crucial point in my story, and I was wondering if this part carries across the necessary oomph for this point. For a bit of context. Pinkie and Twilight have been going around the eerie town of Hoofamr trying to figure out what the villagers are up to, with middling success. The village elder seems to be onto them, but they don't know for sure.
At this point, Pinkie pushes their luck too much, and picrel happens.
Do you think this works? Could be better? Am I stupid for sharing a snippet of a larger narrative without proper context?

I don't have enough context to say anything else. I have no idea why the Lake is significant or what Pinkie is trying to figure out. Sigallop's reaction is incomprehensible, as is Pinkie's reaction to his reaction. My guess is that the excerpt doesn't have the oomph you want. It doesn't feel oomphy. But maybe it's fine and I just need more context.

The setup and Sigallop's reaction are cool, but the balloon simile sort of undermines the mood. It's already a lighthearted image, and if you're trying to build tension, then a deflating balloon suggests the opposite of what you want.

The only thing I can say is that for the past day, Pinkie and Twilight have been feeling increasingly worse due to the plot. They feel everypony is in on the evilness, and the village elder would be the obvious one at the top, so they're trying to get some info from him.
What I had in mind was the Elder acting relaxed, looking into the distance while saying cryptic things until Pinkie overplays her hand and there's that snap of his eyes towards her that make Pinkie go "Oh, I messed up."

This will be a shorter post. In one part due to me not taking any notes, but mostly because, well, what's there to say beyond praising the fic? In truth, focusing and trying to analyze it, looking for flaws, would be much more productive than doing the same with the usual bookclub fic, but I just don't really want to do that right now. The Princesses are still great*, and while I may not love Pinkie as a character so much, well, this is a really good Pinkie. Read this fic right now if you want good Pinkie. Also read this fic if you want great Princesses, great show-like stories, great slow burn, etc.
*Oh right, that's one of the things I was mildly disappointed by. Luna is gone in for the last third. She was never the *main* main character and I get wanting to put 100% of focus on Celestia (and Pinkie, but mostly Celestia), but with how good and important to this fic Luna was in week 1, I'd have preferred to see her in at least one more scene towards the end.

The other thing that might be a downside to some people is that this is firmly a very fimmy romance-first, comedy-second. In terms of priority, not order of appearance—because the first third is where most of the funni lives. There are still some pretty good jokes and funny moments later (+1 for the older fandom memes), but the focus is on the romance. That just seems to be what this author is best at. It is good that he tried to not be a one trick-pony, though; this fic makes up for all the small issues with Lost&Found. This story is in the running for the title of the best bookclub fic of 2025 for me, and that's despite some REALLY strong competition like Mono's "Best fic I've ever written" (or maybe the Maize). I guess some of the "classics" really do deserve that title.
Now I really want to go To Perytonia someday.

These parts read like a story about a mental disorder or something. Like the one fae wrote about the pie sisters. Pinkie's internal struggle to do what she knows she is supposed to be doing but can't.

I think it finished strong. I really wasn't that into it in the beginning and even for some of this weeks reading. Thankfully the date was nice and Celestia improved in my opinion. I also appreciate that the romance didn't go very far, I think what we got fits very well but more would've somewhat spoiled the nature of it. And Luna remained the best pony here as expected.

Yeah, there definitely could've been more than Celestia just silently leaning on her in the 2nd to last scene, but I do think that scene was nice. I'm surprised she didn't watch the whole date though and then admonish Celestia for testing pinkie like that.

Funny enough I couldn't get L&F out of my head starting the second week. I kept thinking that this was the fic where Celestia stepped out of equestria and felt the light of all of her little ponies and then passed out for a while. I definitely think the author was using a bit of his same headcanon and it shows pretty strongly in the final scene.

OK, I don't have much else to say about this that wasn't said last week. It was more of the same, for the most part. I didn't mind the diminished presence of the M6 after the carnival chapters, but we could have used a *bit* more Luna, you know? Parts of the prose continued to drag on for a bit too long, and characters sound pretty similar no matter which scene or chapter they appear in. Pretty flat; even Pinkie and Celestia start to fall into this. I'd say the first week was stronger, but the second week finished appropriately.

There are two counts on which I think the fic is worthy of some recognition. One is continuing the story beyond the confession scene, which is where so many "will they? won't they?" stories end. In fact, a confession ending wouldn't have been satisfying at all for this particular fic, and the one we got gave some needed depth to the actual relationship. The other count is for showing some turbulence in Pinkie and Celestia's relationship all the way from "making it official" up until the last chapter. That made this crackship feel less like a crackship, more believable.

Overall, it doesn't exactly leave me wanting more Pinklestia, but that's perfectly fine. Certain parts were a bit dull or predictable, but never too dull or predictable. It was a good story and earned a like from me. It was a solid concept executed well. That's it.

Look, I like the story, but it hardly measures up to The Creature/Knight or Maize. The prose is good, but not very good like either of those. The early-season comfiness and low-stakes, character-focused plot are nice, but they're also just not that creative, or engaging enough to last 50k words.
Admittedly, week 1 did a very good job of setting up characters, emotions, and a few twists here and there. However, week 2 didn't really do anything but step through the motions week 1 had already laid out for it. And yeah, it was tightly choreographed, but you could already get the broad strokes of week 2 without even reading it, and no individual scene in week 2 tried to do more than fulfill its role in the larger story. We get a Ferris wheel ride where Pinkie *almost* hugs Celestia. We get Celestia and Pinkie in a storage room, but the actual stored items are relevant for all of five seconds before Pinkie pops (or doesn't pop) the question. Then they go to the kitchen to bake stuff, but the "baking" isn't anything more than a distraction and could be substituted by any other activity. Most week 2 scenes and about half the fancy party feel mostly like the author needed "a location where Pinkie and Celestia can talk about X/Y/Z" and just plopped them down.

Honestly? The Twilestia in Lost and Found was out of place and distracting, but it was also more interesting and engaging on its own merits than the Pinklestia here.

See, this kind of came out of nowhere for me. We don't get to see Celestia's perspective before the date, which I suppose is deliberate, but wasn't the whole reason she liked Pinkie because Pinkie doesn't care about Machiavellian mind games, and in fact effortlessly evades them? If Celestia is attracted to Pinkie because she respects the fact that Pinkie treats her like a regular pony, then why doesn't she respect Pinkie enough to spare her the psychoanalysis and just go out to have a good time?

I think it could be higher than them, easily. The prose is worse and the story is "objectively" less intricate, but the stuff that you mention as nice immediately catapults it super far ahead.
Those are ponyfics. Firstly PONY, secondly FICS, and also implicitly stories third. You can go off that path if you have a way to use the setting or the characters for some other purpose, but this is such a good example of respecting and contributing to the PONY part that CiG should weep knowing he could never be this good despite being a much better writer.
And yes, Twice as Bright isn't a literary nobel material, and I would also not pick it as a fic to prove to a normie how "good" ponyfics can be, but that's not what it was meant to be. It's a Ponyfic.

Well yeah, Pinklestia is a crackship and that Twilestia touched on a lot of good ideas for the ship. But taking a crackship and selling it to the readers like a regular shipping fic that's not any worse than the "default" pairings also deserves praise. It works a lot better than you could hope, and twice as well in a show-adjacent story.

I think the author likely intended it to actually be the first, but you could easily read it as the second. Pinkie's implication that Celestia is awkwardly too much of a mom to Twilight is accurate, regardless, and Twilight doesn't have a good answer to it.

Honestly, it could have used an interruption or two. Maybe of Luna or some of the M6 spectating the party from a distance, or just talking about some of the external drama of a mudpony dating the Sun Princess.

Look, I like pure S1-ish pony stuff as much as the next guy, especially when it's integrated into a more ambitious story, but this story just didn't have that much interesting going on. Sure, pony aesthetics and themes should be the core elements, but the show itself was more creative and elegant with the way it set up plotlines (at least in S1). Here, we get some sweet Pinklestia, and it's an accomplishment to pull that off believably, but it was hardly inspired or original.

But this perspective is exactly the problem! I do agree that it's admirable to pull off a crackship as well as a typical default-ship, but that doesn't automatically make it better in itself. For example, The Creature/Knight was basically top-of-the-line Raritwi, deviancy from canon notwithstanding. This Pinklestia is above-average for Pinklestia, and you'd be hard-pressed to find better, but it's still on the level of your average Flutterdash or Tuna or whatever.

This is the second time I've been told this, the first time was by the guy who liked my rape horror story with Queen Chrysalis. What do you mean by it, exactly?

Well I'm thinking of like, for example, that one compilation of pregnant stories that you update. Half of them are literally just the comic you commissioned translated into text. Nothing extra, no setup or going into the characters thoughts at all. And I get it, fetish writer and all, but you could do more than just write a paragraph.

Not the mudpony drama (I don't think the tone of the fic was right for that), but a warm chapter of Luna could've been nice. Twi gets a resolution of her part arc; she doesn't. Hell, he could've done the Lost&Found thing and actually shipped RD with Luna.
But that would all make the fic more complex. Usually it is a good thing; however, here the straightforwardness is a deliberate part of the story's presentation.

^This, basically. I don't think this fic would've been better if it was more "inspired". It's a small, self-contained, cutesy, and very FiM'y thing, and that's what it dreamed of being. It has nothing that would ruin this mood or overly complicate things, and while there is some tension and drama, it gets resolved in a fairly predictable fashion, as you mentioned. Except that I don't consider this a bad thing here. This kind of simplicity would be a bad thing in many other fics, but here it's actually a strength of the [character-focused] story. It's a little unfair to compare it to something like Mono's The Creature, because that one decided to paint a "better" story using ponies as the canvas (and took heavy liberties with it still, since it's actually written to be a fairy tale first), whereas for this fic, being "show-like", "pure pony", etc., was a big part of the mission. Me making grand statements praising the objective goodness of this fic was done slightly in jest and to trigger some responses, because of course that's not the only standard that you can aspire to, but I did want to highlight how well it was done here. Somewhat surprisingly, we don't get enough of these fics written well. Perhaps it's because many of the better writers outright dismiss this as a worthy goal, and that approach is simply wrong.

I noticed the same thing, I agree. The first two were really just meant to be short stories, not even collected into an anthology. Even a short story can still add to a comic by giving context, but I started to see it as a waste to not expand on the scenario the artist created, yeah. I wanted to keep them short and all roughly the same length at first, but I started doing a bit better with the third story, "Bug Shy~!!" by adding, as you noted, a paragraph that covered what wasn't shown. That paragraph at the end is my favourite in that story, actually, and adding to the comics' stories is a good excuse to have more scenarios for illustration, as I did with just that paragraph, if nothing else.

I've started doing this with the most recent three. I do think writing a story that covers the comic and little else is valuable for context, especially since none of the little comics have any explicit dialogue, but I've also got to keep the things short enough so that people will actually read them. I was talking to some other pregnant pony producers, who praised me for my taste and getting so many commissions, but when I asked them about the stories with which the artwork was associated some of them went all "Stories?" on me, kek.

Still, yeah, I've started writing longer and longer chapters for that anthology as I get more comfortable with it, and thinking about what would be cool to add to go along with the comic but which it hadn't shown. I don't think my other anthologies have this problem, because I'm taking just a single point in time rather than a full one-page comic, and I'm also writing longer chapters for most of them. The anthology I've got planned for Queen Chrysalis and her many children will have a standard chapter length around two thousand words.

Just caught up on Starscribe's current thing and it's so fucking funny seeing his shitty romance plot get shut down by his own readers.

One of the recent chapters has the characters hanging out in the hot tub and drinking. After a few beers, the MC starts making out with this guy she likes. The other characters head inside to basically leave them to it, so she keeps making out with him and is getting really into it. This is obviously heading toward the climax of this arc about the MC getting comfortable with her new body and with the idea of dating a guy.

However, the gimmick of this fic is that every 2000 words or so, there's a poll to let the readers decide what the MC should do next. It's always 2 or 3 options and usually they're all fairly reasonable, but sometimes it's clear that the author is kind of forcing it and there's an obvious right answer. In this case, the options were basically "keep going, have sex with this guy" and "stop, go take a cold shower". I thought for sure people would go for it, and we'd be stuck with another half-assed Starscribe romance, shipping the MC with this absolute nothingburger of a character. But that shit actually came back 55% cold shower, lmao

It's always disappointing seeing Starscribe fuck this up because he's written perfectly fine romance plots in the past. FP, FP (aside from the ending), and Through the Aurora all had good ones. Yet he apparently learned nothing from writing those, because he continues to botch it in his more recent fics. (Special mention goes to that one non-pony fic where a dozen magical pixies, most of whom are married or otherwise in relationships, "temporarily" fuse together into a human woman, who starts sleeping with some guy and eventually gets herself knocked up and can't un-fuse for 9 months.)

The magical pixie fusion thing is the main plot of the story. Some guy (human) gets in a magical accident and gets blown apart into several dozen pixies, which go on to create their own society out in the forest. Eventually some of the pixies figure out that they can temporarily fuse together, becoming a human with some combination of the pixies' skills and personalities. This is great for pixie society because as a human they can do things that are very difficult for pixies, like fighting predators, building things, or trading with other humans. Most of the story is them figuring out how this power works and getting into various kinds of trouble with it.

However, for some fucking reason, Starscribe decided to ship Amile (the pixies' female human form - if more than half the pixies in the fusion are male, they get a male human called Emile, and otherwise they get a female human who I believe was called Amile) with some human guy, someone from the village they've started trading with or something like that. It's super fucking weird because there must be 4-5 pixies whose wives/girlfriends are regularly getting fucked by this human man while they're in fusion mode (plus 2-3 more pixies whose husbands/boyfriends are in it too). Somehow nobody has the slightest problem with this. Amile eventually does something stupid, like I want to say she decides to hang out at her boyfriend's house getting railed for three days straight. No idea why her component pixies would be okay with this (the pixies aren't independently conscious while fused, but I'm pretty sure there was a thing where if they would disagree too much about their course of action, the fusion falls apart) given this means they can't go home or see their families for the duration. But when she finally does try to split, it doesn't work - the fusion magic is apparently pro-life and won't do anything that would harm the embryo. So the families of those 10-12 pixies who are stuck in the fusion just don't get to see them for 9 months, and again, everyone is inexplicably okay with this.

To elaborate on this: there was actually a previous romance-related subplot in this same fic, involving mares (potentially) kissing mares, which was just as horrendous as the one that got voted down.

The three major characters at the start of the fic are the MC (human guy), his girlfriend, and their roommate (another girl). After the TF virus runs its course, the MC ends up as a mare, the GF is also a mare, and the roommate turns into a male griffon. The MC and GF are a bit awkward around each other for a while, since the TF in this one is pretty slow and they're stuck for several days in the "semi-anthro abomination" phase (plus, you know, monsters trying to eat them, being on the run from the government, and general apocalyptic happenings). But eventually things settle down and they find somewhere safe to hide out, at which point the GF says "I'm not into girls" and dumps the MC on the spot. And the MC's response is basically "that makes sense, bye".

What? What the fuck is wrong with these people? They've been together for two years and the MC literally just saved the GF's life and they're not even going to TRY to make it work? Like, if I'd been together with my waifu for a few years, and she suddenly got R63'd but was otherwise the exact same pony I fell in love with, well, maybe I really would hate sucking her dick or maybe I'd be okay with it, but you better believe I'd make 100% sure before walking out.

Not these characters, apparently. They decide to be "like sisters" (immediately after establishing that the MC isn't on particularly good terms with her actual sister, lel). And then the GF turns around and jumps on the roommate's B.G.C. (emphasis on the "B" - the fic mentions several times that griffons are all-around much larger than ponies).

They're not. In fact, the MC's love interest in particular is so not-horny that he manages to share a bed with her, cuddling together naked, every night for a week, without ever once popping a boner. And he practices magic with her all day without flirting or expressing the slightest interest. He's too busy "respecting her boundaries" to have any opinions or desires of his own. He wants her precisely to the extent that she wants him to want her, and not a bit more.

But the actual answer is, the rest of the fic is more-or-less fine, so I don't have much to complain about outside of the idiotic shipping decisions. The one guy having zero personality is easy enough to ignore when he's just a random party member rather than the MC's main love interest. As is unfortunately typical for Starscribe, the main adventure parts are good, but the romance subplot is unimaginably shit. (Though he still has yet to top the bit in Sisters of Willowbrook where the MC screws the mechanic kid. Holy fuck that pissed me off so much, and even more once I realized why he did it.)

I wanted to like this story. I really liked This Is The Last Train Car from the same author, and many parts of the main hook here were intriguing, mostly at the beginning. But everyone just feels very out of character, ESPECIALLY Dinky which is really saying something considering how she doesn't even have an established character to risk straying from. I get what he was going for, trying to make her contrast Derpy by being studuous and focused, but she just feels too precocious compared to her peers, and uncharacteristically abrasive. In fact, I struggle to really like any character in this story, save for maybe Derpy—but even she's been heavily flanderized, to the point of being an illiterate dumbass who seemingly only eats muffins.

I also think the story really falls off as it goes on, leading up to a conclusion that would've fit perfectly thematically but doesn't have the proper build-up and comes at the expense of just putting down the horror aspect without resolving it in any way, quite literally just putting it on the shelf for later and just never coming back to it. Casually doing the whole Doctor Whooves/TARDIS thing out of nowhere in what's supposed to be a serious emotional climax certainly doesn't help, either. This story seems to suffer from quietly being part of a larger series that it's mostly just dripfeeding lore for, so it isn't really written to be as standalone as it's advertised as, and instead of going "well that wasn't much of a conclusion" you're supposed to keep reading one of the other ones to see where this builds up to. Unfortunately, it didn't really do a good job convincing me to do that.

Nah, nothing weird like that. The GF/griffon ship is handled basically how you'd expect for a ship between side characters, where it's just sort of happening in the background and isn't the main focus. Like James Irwin 4 getting together with that batpony stallion, where it's barely even relevant until she finds out she's pregnant. The crazy thing here is just how fast the GF goes from hard dropping the MC to rebounding with the griffon. I want to say it was like three days or something. Certainly couldn't have been more than a week, given the entire timeline of the story so far only covers like three weeks.

I wrote a script that combines a lot of resources to do it, but the actual reading part is this:
The story text is pulled from a database, Elasticsearch, and split into sentences based on punctuation.
Each sentence is embedded to capture its semantic meaning, Almost all of the process revolves around this embedding process, which uses an LLM. The model isn't a chat model, though, the embeddings are a long string of numbers, the purpose of which is to compare against each other to see if the meaning of the text is similar. This is the first time the GPU reads the story, and the step that takes the most time.
After each sentence is embedded, it's compared against its neighboring sentences to combine strings of them on a similar topic together. In stories, dialogue in particular can form a semantic boundary, so this is done on a sliding window to "skip across" the boundary, if it is small enough to imply that the topic still hasn't changed.

After that similarity comparison is done, the split sentences are put back together into a chunk of text that is still small enough for my GPU to read, and that chunk is embedded, with the embeddings sent to be stored in Elasticsearch. This is the second time the GPU reads the story, and takes about 1/4 the time of the first reading.

Next, and this is the most impressive part to me, a question about the story's contents is embedded:
Instruct: Given a web search query, retrieve relevant passages that answer the query.
Query: Which scenes depict Luna and another character having a romantic or intimate moment?"
This embedding is sent to Elasticsearch to find the chunks that answer the question. It's frankly unbelievable to me how well this works. If it is a Tunafic, it finds the Tuna scenes and puts them almost at the top of the search results. If it's not a Tunafic, but does have Luna shipping, it will find Luna and that other character's scenes - anything from a heartfelt conversation to banging. In a fic, https://www.fimfiction.net/story/562291/paladin-shimmer-goes-on-a-bender that has no Luna shipping (it's Twilight/Sunset, it even captured a scene where Luna warmly takes over the night from Celestia.

With that, I have the answer for whether or not the story is a Tunafic, but reading the out-of-context chunks is unnecessarily annoying. So, finally, those retrieved chunks are combined into a prompt to examine the retrieved story text and answer whether or not it is a Tunafic. This prompt goes to a typical chat model, and produces a chat response. It's right most of the time, but it's pretty clearly constrained by my VRAM and the general stupidity of chat models. You could say it's the third time my GPU reads the fic, though.

No, I don't think that basic chunking strategy would work very well. I like the way the chunks are semantically distinct. I think that is why the search works so well. With a wide overlap, you would get a lot of words, but the chunk would be semantically muddled. Having a lot of words is good for keyword searches, but not this.

Anyway, the code for the CLI version is online, you can change which chonkie chunker is used on one line if you're so sure. I'm not motivated to because I've gone through two dozen of the stories it's searched so far and the chunks are good. Every single result reinforces my conviction that there is not an appropriate fixed chunking window size to use, and I made the right choice in letting SDPM choose it based on that part of the story's coherency.

But you need to determine whether the sentence means anything and whether it should be combined. That is where I think you go wrong: Your initially sentence embedding destroys context, so your measurements of meaningfulness are not as good as they could be, so your chunks are not as good as they could be. There will be chunks that are combined that shouldn't be, or split that shouldn't be, or that were split at not quite the right sentence. Some mistakes are inevitable, but I believe you have more than you should.

It would be better to do something like this: For each sentence, choose a window of surrounding sentences. Maybe you include a fixed number of sentences on either side; maybe you include sentences until you have at least a fixed number of words on either side. Sentences further away from the one of interest should be downweighted. Embed the whole weighted window at once, and use that embedding to make measurements of similarity. That will give you better semantic chunks.

Yes, I have more chunks than I need, and I do count it against the library that I'm using that I can't have it make overlapping chunks the way I want. I do think I would have better search results if, when it found a semantically contiguous portion of the story that didn't fit in the model's context window, it would chunk it with overlaps.

Not wanting to implement something is completely reasonable. Implementation is a lot of work, and maintaining anything related to machine learning is basically a full-time job. It's a shame that the library doesn't support this stuff, though. I guess you could try running the chunker multiple times at different grouping thresholds? 5.1k words, not horror but it takes place during Nightmare Night so it still fits. Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle (here dating) attend Diamond Tiara's Nightmare Night party, and queen bitch knows exactly what to say to get under Scootaloo's skin. I really love the way the CMCs are written here, Diamond is very effective at being a cunt, and the sex scene at the end was good though caught me a bit by surprise and so I wasn't in the mood for it. If anything, it's the characterization and little bits of romantic fluff that got me going, and I only wish there was more of it to read.

I found this one by digging through the pages of every author who wrote something on my favorites list (I'd been tearing through my ever-growing Read Later list too much to have ever considered going even further out of my way to make it longer), so I can't say I'm too surprised to have liked this story so much. Yeah, I should've pre-written this post instead of having this on one screen and ALAO's Changeling on the other as Kassaz floods the chat with his Pregsalis comms and dumps paragraphs of his not!vore kink into the thread, but to be honest, even though I finished the fic before the 10th, it really didn't inspire pre-writing the post. But for the more traditional opening, you can pretend I started with something like

And I also don't like to start with comparing fics, but this fic is the opposite of Twice as Bright. And that means it's dated as fuck, has very little connection to the show, the pacing is totally out of control in some parts, and it tonally feels much more like the real world with a thin coat of pony paint, etc.
I've made a lot of notes. But then I closed the file. I don't really want to badmouth it too much, especially not during the anni. There are some elements it does well. For me, all the "gay in Equestria" angst is also kind of charming. Bad, mind you, very bad even, but it hits different on a 2011 story. I won't spend 1000 words reeee'ing, but it must be said that the fic spends an astounding amount of time on the "b-but we're m-mares! society will look down on us!" part and just as much on Octavia being sexually confused despite being in a relationship with Vinyl. Yep, it's a 2011/12 story, alright. Of course, neither of those threads results in any real conflict—it's just kind of there, until it's not. Poor writing? Sure, but that's not how you're meant to read it.
And also, while I wouldn't call it very good, Octavia is distinct and likeable enough that the fic didn't feel like a chore, at least not until the last third or so. It also has just the right amount of errors for a 2011 story to still remain easily readable—which is, again, bad but looks cute. And there are references to real-world Proper Nouns on basically every page, but the references are all a decade and a half old.

Sorry for being a little all over the place with this post, but I think I still said mostly what I wanted to touch on: Octavia is likeable, and the fic is extremely "early fandom" (as opposed to "early show"), but reading it isn't a bad experience. Is it better than University Days? Eh, they're cut from the same cloth. I suppose this one puts a little more effort into using the setting, since unicorns, pegasi, magic, etc. are all relevant, which would make me rank it above the more well-known story.
Can I recommend it? Only to someone looking for a nostalgia trip into the days of yore, or to someone trying to better understand the fics that laid the groundwork for the fandom's collective opinion. I value both of those aspects, so I don't regret reading it. But if (You)'re not interested in either, then no, this is a pretty bad story without any additional context.

Hypoxia can happen, too, but that takes a lot longer. I think the brain can go something like two minutes without oxygen before the neurons start dying. People huffing gas generally don't do it that long but take multiple short hits instead (the opening of the Steve-o documentary on Youtube is a good example. I remember noticing a lot of flaws when reading it, but this one never jumped out at me. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I do think you're both overexaggerating its importance and underestimating all the other issues if you think this is somehow THE big flaw with FoE.

Anyway, you can do this in like 30 seconds: shift-O, click the white, grow 1, feather 1, delete. Nice sharp edges, no white blobs in all the corners, and it doesn't chew up the thin light purple stripe at the bottom right of her mane or the blue one sticking out on her tail.

If you're willing to put in a few minutes of actual effort, I'd do as follows. First, get the selection as above, but don't hit delete. Instead, make a new layer, and fill the selection with white (shift-B, shift-click). Make a second layer under that and fill it completely with black. Now you can easily see the little spots in the interior that got wrongly selected and touch them up with brush/eraser tools (make sure you're editing the white layer and not the black layer). Some of these spots may be invisible in selection mode - if each pixel that makes up the spot is less than 50% selected, the spot won't have a visible selection border. Once you're done, right click the white layer and use "alpha to selection" to turn it back into a selection. You can then go back to the original layer and delete the selection.
