Simple, just talk to them like you wanna make a friend.
Think of it this way, if you were a girl, would you rather: spend time with a dude that's clearly gonna just ask about relationships stuff and whatnot, or would you just hang out with someone to have fun for a couple, then just leave it as that.
Same thing with guys, if a chick shows up right the gate all "let's get married style" would you really marry her without a second thought, or be a little in the fence, as in "why does she want to go there yet, I don't even know her?".
It's not too complicated, anon. And hey, friends are pretty awesome to have.
Only issue is if you have feelings not being reciprocated and for that, just say it outright. Just rip that bandaid off before it rots away and becomes a major pain.

NTA, but, to be fair, I think it's not so much a meeting grills thing, more a meeting friends thing.
We're all so online that every one feels like an impenetrable fortress irl.
Against this the only thing is finding hobby groups irl and interacting with people there.
Frankly I find making friends nowadays to be really hard, and requiring a lot of circumstances to align.
