this chart of mine is pretty old and doesn't really reflect everything i listen to, even within folk and country, so i was gonna give a go at making one of those recommendation flowcharts, but realizes that most of those are geared to a single artist's discography, and even the ones that are for given genres are typically going "hey here's an entire album give it all a listen to" which i guess makes sense for everyone who's used to physical media, but I'm relatively weird in comparison in that it's pretty often that there's litterally only 1 song of a given artist i listen to, and not even bother to listen to anything else that artist has made, not due to not liking it or anything but just not bothering to listen to it. i think there's maybe 20 full albums that i listen to the entire thing of.

Another thing is that i'm not actually yet sure how to go about going "hey you like this sound, try x y and z next"

anyways, this is a very much WIP of basically my attempt of understanding what i listen to, made with Mermaidjs, no album covers with this but that's looks to be possible with their Flowchart type. I'm curious what people think on this kind of presentation? it's basically Genre -> Subgenre -> Artist -> songs i listen to.

if people like it, or at least if people don't screech at me too much, i may expand out from just my country/folk stuff and do my most of my listening, which is something like 10k songs.

Hi /chart/ it's been a few years! Need some album recs to listen to while I'm working. My usual albums are getting stale and I have nothing better to do than listen to audiobooks and music at work right now.

been a bit mopey lately. Checked out this Of Montreal album I was told I'd like by someone and it was alright. Not exactly what I wanted but I enjoyed it. Something sad/angry preferred, but if you've got anything fun I might like I'm always willing to listen to it.

Hope you all have been well.

Also on the off chance that the guy who told me to listen to Nails by Foetus, thank you. I still put that album on every so often and you probably told me to check it out like 8 years ago at this point. I doubt you're here but just in case... my sincere thanks, great album.

The spam filter gets triggered if you quote too many people at once. Sometimes it is more than 10 posts, sometimes it is 9 or 8. It is rarely less than those. When I get spam check'd, I just break my reply into several ones. So if you quoted, like, 24 people, divide your post in three replies.

It might even be harder to make it as an underground hip-hop collective or artist now.
What you can do from absolute ground-zero has been nerfed pretty wild from places like Soundcloud and Bandcamp and a lot of indeh-rap fags that seemed to blow up and disappear without a trace had some very eerie connections if you just do a smidge of research, it's wild bro.

I used to be huge hip-hop dork but aside from trvebeard shit like dalek, scratch, illbient, and DJ Krush-esque instrumental beats I haven't really cared to revisit it in a while.
I think the oldest music-related book I have in my collection is:

You don't know the half of it, i'm still playing around with the structure of it, here's a mostly raw/chatgpt generated version of all the genres i listen to as labeled by Spotify(a lot of artists, even some of the biggest like Taylor Swift for some reason don't have a genre classification on Spotify but even then it's probably got some of the most nuanced classification around). As i progress on this, i'm probably gonna condense a number of the genres that are basically "[geolocation]/[language] [genre]" kinda stuff for the most part, because to my ears, a lot of these just don't really have a distinct sound from each other besides the vocals, if it even has vocals.

I think since the Everynoise guy got fired by Spotify, they've been nuking a number of those as i'm not really seeing many of them anymore in the metadata(i recall a number of genres that was basically just ([British town] Indie) and what not.) but they seem to be overcorrecting in some cases or just not understanding the music. The manual chart i did in this style i put Dengue Fever as "Cambodia Rock Revival" because that's exactly what it is, but Spotify put it as.... Ethiopian Jazz. Or sometimes they are far too vague, like an interesting band i came across was a Nepalian Funk Metal Rap band called Tumbleweed Inc. and Spotify just labels it "Metal Rap", i think they also had it as like either Nepal Metal or Asian Metal or something like that, but that doesn't seem to exist anymore.

>i'm still playing around with the structure of it, here's a mostly raw/chatgpt generated version of all the genres i listen to as labeled by Spotify
How and where do you generate this shit? I miss having last.fm tag clouds after I made the move to Spotify.

so first things first, if you have the desktop version of Spotify, download spicetify. it's basically a repo of extensions for Spotify. this is what i use mostly, the one you'll want is "better spotify genres", it'll show what spotify labels it genre wise and if you click the links it'll take you to the everynoise playlist if that's available, or just send you to search with that term. The everynoise playlists are an absolute goldmine of music, but as i said before the Everynoise guy got fired from it and thus the playlists ARE going to get more and more out of date/new genres it doesn't know about are gonna appear(southern gothic comes to mind).

anyways all of that above was just for discovery based on what you already listen to. as for what you actually asked for, basically connect your account to something like exportify's site or w/e, and export the relevant playlist, it'll give you basically all the metadata spotify has on the tracks on that playlist. you can then just copy the genre column of the resulting CSV file.
now more often than not, a given artist/track will have more than one genre attached to it, sometimes to ridiculous situations like
> bluegrass,newgrass,americana,alt country,folk,indie folk,red dirt,folk rock,psychedelic rock,classic country,outlaw country,singer-songwriter,anti-folk,blues,country blues,country rock,roots rock,yacht rock,soft rock,classic rock,traditional folk
what you'll want to do is basically isolate those, personally i just used sublime text's regex replace to replace the commas with a newline

after that i deduped the resulting list and provided chatgpt the genres and told it to make a mermaidjs mindmap out of it based on genres and subgenres.

Questlove's books are as good as his documentaries. The guy is an autist, so it is like having someone whose special interest is black music, at your fingers. He has a good prose voice. Not too tard, not too normie.

https://youtu.be/6RnggkA003w?si=dUb31bdHnonFjYdL
Coven's self-titled album was in my Mom's record collection and while I was growing up she would play it every so often in between her usual selections of Carole King and Emmylou Harris. She liked "Nightingale" quite a lot and I can still hear her rendition of it as an echo in my mind. It has been eight years since she passed and the hurt is still there. I don't know if you'll particularly like the song Anon, but you asked for something personal.
