Definitely up there. And Randy was also technically killed by his tour bus driver. D Boon as well. But even then, Randy's was still relatively so tragic. I bet Cliff had a few years on him too. Randy was only 25.

Allman Bro's bass guitarist:
>On November 11, 1972, Oakley was involved in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia, a mere three blocks away from where Duane Allman had his fatal motorcycle accident the year before. Oakley was riding around a sharp right bend of the road on Napier Avenue at Inverness when he crossed the roadโ€™s center line and collided at an angle with a city bus rounding the bend from the opposite direction. After striking the front and then the back of the bus, Oakley was thrown from his motorcycle, just as Allman had been, and struck his head. Oakley declined medical treatment at the scene after the accident and caught a ride home. However, three hours later, he was rushed to the hospital, delirious and in pain, and died of cerebral swelling caused by a fractured skull. Attending doctors stated that even if Oakley had gone straight to the hospital from the scene of the accident, the extent of his injuries was so serious he could not have been saved. He was 24 years old when he died, the same age as Duane Allman.

I know the newfags will laugh but relative to influence/work still left to give and least deserving in character it's unironically SOPHIE. It's like something out of a neofuturist opera, you literally couldn't write it more cruel. Buddy Holly is the only other example I can think of on a similar level.

I will say that, as much of a boomer take as it is, the Day the Music Died has to be the worst. The real tragedy is that unlike a lot of stories about musicians dying young, there was absolutely no stupidity or poor behavior involved on the part of Valens, Holly or Richardson beyond Valens happening to win a coin toss. Richie Valens and Buddy Holly weren't even old enough to be hitting their primes, and the Big Bopper, who was a pretty innovative artist in his own right (invented the music video), was relegated to being the "other guy who died" given the talent of the other victims. Even if Richie Valens had lost that coin toss, Waylon Jennings would have died and been relegated to history as just some touring musician instead.

Patsy Cline's fatal plane crash (which also took Hawkshaw Hawkins) bothers me too. They had refused multiple offers to either ride in a car or stay an extra night until the weather cleared. So maybe it's not as tragic since there was more human error involved, but it's still a shame Patsy lived to be only 30.

should count mainly people who were still young and had a lot of tread left on the tires. i do agree Dinah Washington might have been nearing the end of the road in the mid-60s like most singers of her generation so i don't count her. Marc Bolan probably had more left to give, he died too soon. yet still i can't help but feel we dodged a bullet when we consider the thought of Jimi Hendrix making a disco album or an 80s pop album with giant drums.

>Kath picked up a semi-automatic 9 mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson: "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it". His last words were, "What do you think I'm gonna do? Blow my brains out?"[38] To calm Johnson's concerns, Kath showed him the empty magazine. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Apparently unbeknownst to Kath, the gun had a round in the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot,[38] eight days before his 32nd birthday.

Arguable
>The NTSB investigation determined that Aycock's aviation medical certificate had expired[31][32] and it was reported that Aycock had been the pilot in another fatal crash in the United Arab Emirates six years earlier.[30] Sharon had been aware of the prior crash, but hadn't informed anyone else on the tour. In the moments after the crash, she reportedly admonished tour manager Duncan for allowing their people into a plane with a pilot who had been using drugs all night, telling him "Don't you know that man had already killed one of the Calhouns' kids in a helicopter crash?"[15]
According to other members of the band, the very next day after Randy's death she altered his contract so his royalties would go to her and Ozzy.

Randy's brother and Rudy Sarzo have both said after he'd seen out his contract with Ozzy, he wanted to go back to music school but also form a new band that combined his loves of metal, prog and classical music - realistically probably something in line with the Alcatrazz debut or Yngwie's early solo work.

I don't think the cops intended to kill Roy.

I think Roy was a big guy who liked to drink, and who didn't like the cops giving him trouble. I think the cops, for their part, were tired of Roy being drunk and most of all Roy repeatedly and very vocally not respecting their authoritah.

So one night when the cops rounded up Roy for being drunk they roughed him up to remind him who was boss. But however they did it, he ended up in his cell dead (and it might have been like Berry where in the moment Roy seemed OK, and only died after the cops had left his cell to let him "sleep it off").

But when they came back to check on him Roy was dead. So they sat his body on the floor, took his tie and loosely tied it to the cell bars, and ruled it "suicide."

D.C. Telecaster players seem to meet tragic ends.

(Mike Stern is probably lucky one of Roy's Tele's was stolen from him.)

Shawn was utterly unique. There's the old guitarist joke that goes "How many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb? 20 - 1 to change the bulb, and 19 to stand around saying 'I can do that.'" No one who heard Shawn ever said "I can do that."

Even Guthrie Govan, one of the planet's best guitarists, was in awe of Shawn's abilities.

The most mind-bending thing I ever saw Shawn do was at a sound check. He was playing the keyboard parts to a song from "Powers of Ten" on the master keyboard controller. But then he pressed a patch change button and suddenly started playing all the guitar parts - *on the keyboard*. And *then* he switched patches again and started playing *all the drum parts - again on the keys*. And he kept doing that, going through all parts of all the songs in the set. He could simply rewire the parts that needed to be played - guitar, piano, drums - through his fingers to whatever instrument happened to be in front of him.

I've been a professional musician for a long time, and seen and appreciated most of the greats (either live or on video), and what Shawn was just casually doing as part of his warmup was the most amazing musical thing I've ever seen.

the thing about Croce, he could really write great songs. like, even if you don't like his style, they're objectively really well written. and everyone knows them when they hear them since they were popular enough to become generally-known, American songbook type of songs. but he died basically before he saw any of that admiration, he was getting popular but his biggest successes were all posthumous.

John Balance. Coil never stopped getting better and experimenting, by 2002-2003 they were starting to mix traditional instruments with electronics, then Geoff completely fucked himself up with vodka and fell, perhaps by accident, perhaps by suicide. At least we got The Ape of Naples and The New Backwards after that, then Sleazy died too and it was over.
Maybe it was inevitable because you can't stare at the abyss for so long while remaining fully sane and intact. It's also crazy that they made a song called Who'll Fall? 13 years before he died.

Shinji Sato was tragic too, Fishmans were also at the top of their game when he died.
I'm also thinking of Bud Powell, Nick Drake and Sam Mehran.

I do agree. Product and Oil were really good and crazy innovative, but I felt like xir could have pushed production to another whole new level if they would've stayed around on this cursed world some more. I cried that day.
>>127002985
Eric Dolphy's death is also tragic as fuck, he was only getting better and better and weirder, his late 1960s output would have been fucking insane.
>>127006778
Lorca is one of my favorite albums, he was unpredictable, his late albums are mediocre but fun, it's a shame he was retard mixing opiates with alcohol.
>>127010214
Honestly, it was written on the wall. All his melodies and lyrics are absolutely depressing, there was no way he would live very long.

Jackie Wilson: had a massive heart attack on stage and collapsed and stopped breathing right after singing the line "my heart is crying" from Lonely Teardrops, audience thought it was part of his act and applauded...
by the time people figured out he was ill, got him breathing and he was rushed to the hospital he had suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen and after treatment he lived in a semi- comatose state, aware but unable to communicate or move, for nine years before he finally died.

He was 49 and had had a good career and hung out with his pal Elvis (who paid a bunch of his medical bills) so he got to be a star and enjoy his fame, but lingering for nine years unable to move or talk had to be hellish, especially for someone known for his dynamic performances that rivaled James Brown's.

This. Buddy had released like 20 historic songs by the time he was 22. The loss is so important that it's almost incomprehensible. Pop radio was still in the fucking dark ages at the time and it took until like 1965 for the Beatles to fix it. Buddy could have done it earlier had he not died.

Jaco always had the biggest ego, he literally introduced himself as the world's best bass player even before he got famous and went up to other legendary bass players like Marcus Miller and Anthony Jackson and told them to their faces they should get lessons with him in his hotel room. Only Miles Davis was more arrogant than Jaco so it's no wonder he eventually FAFO'd when he was a strung up junkie shamble instead of a young man.

This is a thread about tragic deaths, not retards getting what they deserve. Literally all 90s artists are "I cry about my drug habit until I die." Zero sympathy, zero fucks given. Their deaths are to be celebrated bcuz one less junkie is one less junkie.

Rhoads was sober, and the pilot assured him and the wardrobe lady that he wouldn't do any stunts because the wardrobe lady had a heart condition. That's why they agreed to get in the plane. They believed him and died for it. It was basically murder-suicide.
