I always was intrigued about this album's tracklist consisting of couples of songs (at least) that work with the same musical theme/motif, feeling like two sides of the same song
>Very Ape/Tourettes
>Serve the servants/ Frances farmer will have her revenge
>All Apologies/Pennyroyal tea/Dumb
>Scentless Apprentice/Radio friendly unit shifter
Not sure if it was deliberate, or if they were genuinely running out of creativity. I don't think that a fourth album was going to happen anyway. We more than likely would have gotten a Kurt solo album had he not croaked, pulling from different influences than we got so far.

I always wonder what the 4th album would have sounded like. Kurt had a different answer every time he was asked, once he said he wanted to get into more of an REM Automatic for the People sound, another time he said he wanted to keep the In Utero sound, he also said he wanted to go more stripped down and acoustic. Who knows, all we have is these two last songs that are very different from each other but have a very distinct In Utero sound.

Actually, I would like to retract this statement.

It's not great anymore, I've listened to it too much over the years. It's still really good but it's lost a lot of its edge now. I stuck it on a while ago, then at around Frances I put on The Brazilian by Genesis (it's just a song, not an album), as something had reminded me of it, and listened to that twice. The, when I came back to In Utero, and it just sounded so dull in comparison to the Genesis tune. So, in summery:

The Brazilian, is great

In Utero, is not.

Hope that doesn't upset too many of you.

i can see the traces of mudhoney in there somewhere, owing to their seniority in the washington scene, but as far as nirvana goes i really don't. they took cues from the same bands, but approached music differently. unwound never got as melodic as nirvana ; and nirvana never got as angular as unwound. but i guess you could draw a parallel between rock trios that liked to get really noisy.

It was impossible to evade nirvana's influence during that time, especially as unwound, who were still in high school in olympia. Fake Train and Incesticide/In utero are for me the same style of melodic noise rock between the wipers, jesus lizard and scratch acid. at least two other anons lumped those bands together as well. but they changed radically from fake train to NPI and never recaptured that FT sound.

>You were born minutes from the epicenter of grunge, yet nothing could be more removed from grunge than Unwound's music. Can you tell me something about your musical/cultural/personal development?
>I guess in a way we were reacting to grunge. The Seattle pseudo-rock star thing was really uninspiring and cynical. We were into the Melvins alot and Nirvana, but more influenced by the DC punk thing happening back then and just more interesting US hardcore(husker du/black flag/mission of burma) and punk from England(wire/gang of 4/joy division).

>On this album I hear more Neil Young and Nirvana than in previous ones: comment?
>I like the album "Trans" by Neil Young and that song Cortez The Killer, but I'm not a freak. Nirvana, I dont know, they were more of an early influence.

alright, since the guys themselves said it, i won't argue against it. those two bands still don't register as an example of linear continuity in my mind. what i meant was that i can trace a line from the ramones to nirvana, but unwound, for me, leapfrogs the ramones and ties its lineage more directly to the stooges and later on to black flag's sludgier works and all that stuff. but whatever, it don't matter.

I never knew anyone in the 80's who liked the Smiths that wasn't either a homosexual or a fat girl. But I'm American, I assume it was different in England. I've heard they're more down with homos there.
The popularity the Smiths have with zoomers is baffling and honestly disturbing to me. It's a sign of how effeminate your generation has become.
Nirvana is better than that simply because Nirvana rocks, whereas the Smiths is whiny & gay.

His songwriting partnership with Johnny Marr is a once in a lifetime event and they literally never wrote a bad song together. You know what's funny? I was watching that new doc about Failure - their record was produced by Albini in his studio right after In Utero and their drums sounds the same as Grohl's.

Scentless Apprentice is probably my favorite Nirvana song, that record is so good. I also love the Smiths! Wouldn't dream of comparing the two.

You'll notice a lot of bands started trying to copy Nirvana.
Which is ironic because Kurt drew inspiration from other bands.

the term mog originates in lookism/incel (non-pejorative) culture. it derives from the phrase "alpha Male Of Group," essentially saying that someone was the most high status male of a sampled group. so it has eventually come to mean something that is better than the rest, to the point of making whatever it is being compared to look worse. in pic related, the man on the right is quite a bit taller than the man on the left, so it could be said that he is mogging him, much like it could be said that big tunes billy corgan's musical output mogged all his contemporaries.
