I think I prefer The Four Horsemen actually (you're right that the lyrics are much cooler, James was also a much better vocalist), but I was thinking about the composition as I was listening and felt the need to put a metal sacred cow's feet to the fire, and bait just a little bit as a treat.
Similar to the Sweet Home Alabama moment on TFH, Phantom Lord also has a momentum-derailing moment in the MIDDLE OF THE SONG that presages other terrible decisions made on otherwise good songs like Master of Puppets.

I understand your point, but ever-increasing speed and aggression was metal's trajectory for a decade plus. The band that can go further along this path and still have a good song gets some bonus points, for me.
