hello and welcome back to that "/gg/ thread"
Dang here, Meck here.
today we're talking about the wide world of super strats. what are they? what were the original guitars that we now look back on as super strat-like and what exactly separates a regular stratocaster from a super one
>>127283754yellow makes it drive sideways

well Meck, here in my hands is a beautiful example of a classic super strat
this is of course the Agile Guitars Pendulum 10 model. it has, as the name suggests 10 strings. WHOA. that's at least 2 more than i'm used to using.
Now, this model is widely regarded as the original super strat from way back in 2012. Before then, no one had ever considered adding to the original design of the Fender Stratocaster. indeed it had stayed exactly the same for over 60 years. Agile, using their design philosophy of "Play Authentic" decided that they would add not only extra strings but, heh get this, twin-coil pickups which they patented early in 2009 while designing this guitar. they called them Bum-huggers after Qi Juang in the factory who came up with the concept in late 2008. of course Qi was hung the following month after it was discovered that he hadn't had permission to try new things, as is tradition in the CCP.
To make a long story short, i estimate that this guitar has at lease 3 more toan than anything that came before it. a true trendsetter in the industry.
And what do you have over on your lap Meck?...
>>127283822That is one BEAST of a guitar Deng, more than i could handle for sure.
Anyway, what i have for you today is known as the second super strat ever released, just at the start of this year. this is the Strandberg and Jacob Collier collaboration of their Boden model.
As you can see, strandberg have actually removed a string from this guitar, now there is only 5 of them.
Jacob, widely regarded as one of the great minimalist composers of our time has taken the idea of "less is more" that he utilizes in all of his grammy-winning recordings and applied that to the world of guitar design.
As you can see, there's no headstock, no tremolo system and in fact no tuners. this guitar is in tune from the factory, as per collier's directions. what it does however share with the Agile guitar are those Bum-hugger pickups you mentioned.
Jacob is famously a big fan of hugging the bum out of his tone, heh, and i must say, this strat is truly super in every sense of the word.

>>127283883well, thanks for inviting me on to the show guys. I hope these guitars aren't TOO super for you haha.
I'd like to remind the audience that these two guitars Deng and Meck have are the ONLY super strats that have been released so far. Maybe there are other luthiers out there with their own funny ideas about improving ancient designs but we've yet to see any of them try.

Question for people who has used EMG and Fishman pickups. Is the noise floor comparable between the two? I have EMG and a bunch of passive pickups and I get excessive static noise from the passives. Ithink, because of there's water caves below everywhere in my city it's hard to find a grounded place so I think I'm stuck with actives.
Anyone knows how good are Fishman's compared to active EMGs on this? How about passive mode and single coil mode on Fishman Fluence Modern are they as noisy as real passives?

Feel like giving one to charity.
>>127286243EMGs have balanced outputs between shit so technically they are better
fishmans are noiseless if you ground the bridge though.
using single-coil mode will do just that, use single coil mode and will give you nosie unless you wire them up to run a single coil on each pickup
i use both fishmans and emgs so ask if there is something else
>>127283122Like 4-6 months. I go to shows every weekend and im convinced most of these guys picked up the guitar earlier in the year. Which isn't to discourage anyone, thats exactly what you should be doing, playing shows and improving. People have made careers off 4 power chords the goal is to have fun and be fulfilled. Stop worrying about it.
>>127286937>fishmans are noiseless if you ground the bridge though.but I thought al guitars should have the bridge grounded?
>>127286952I've been playing for decades and haven't improved since first learning Johnny B Goode. Tbh.
>>127286243>>127286937this configuration for example will give you no noise, yet you will use single coil on both, they cancel hum
>>127286970mostly yeah, but EMGs use a balanced signal, which is inherently noise-canceling
>>127286885>How do you cope with itby running a wet dry rig
>>127286991>mostly yeah, but EMGs use a balanced signal, which is inherently noise-cancelingso you dont need to ground the bridge on EMGs**
>>127286986Yeah ive been playing for around 23yrs and will plateau if I don't sit down and learn new things with regularity. It helps to keep the creativity sparked and its just fun after you realize that everything you avoided learning you already picked up from playing for so long, you're just missing a piece here or there to connect it all together. I've had some absolutely mind blowing realizations that are elementary at best in the grand scheme of things. Never quit being a student.
>>127287065put xr on applesauce if you're in a hurry
>>127286991Ah thanks. When you say "no noise" you mean similar levels like EMG right? I mean there is noise on them in my home but minimal. I understand there's always a small noise floor even on well grounded outlets.
>>127287155yeah if you wire them up the right way, and avoid using single coil mode in one pickup only.
the emg dual voice pickups has the same problem(the ones with single coil mode).
thats just the way the cookie clicks
anyways, all the shit i wrote is just a roundabout way of saying, if you are very bothered with noise, and do not want to solder, just get the EMGs, they are tard-proof, shit works great in basses too.
to the point i can sit in front of my very noisy computer and play without hum or noise.
i much prefer fishman pickups but they are a hassle to wire up + more expensive. great if you want to go above and beyond though.

>>127287583Sorry- wrong picture.
I wouldnโt mind making it a little side project to repaint btw if itโs a different color,
>>127287583if you need a good but cheap strat, find a MIM. old squiers were decent quality, but anything post funi gen is shit.
>>127287180What do you prefer about the Fishmans? Usually what I get from the active voicing is that it is modeled after the EMGs but I still prefer the sound of EMG 81.

>>127289337some people have to play with gloves. focal dystonia or a metal allergy. with correct technique all you're doing is pushing the string down over the fret so it's now however long it is from that fret to the bridge. outside of very specific techniques what you do behind the fret doesn't matter
>>127289462if the glove doesn't fit absolutely perfectly, you're going to mute the string as the excess material will go over the fret, especially when playing playing on the high end of the neck.
does anyone know exactly what jim croce is doing where he moves his bar chords down in his shuffle songs? some people play it as a major 4 chord on the A string but it looks like he's just rolling his ring finger and barring a 5 chord. i can't get it to sound the same though

>>127282857 (OP)why do relatively few guitars come with p90s? it's clear to me that they're the best and most neutral-sounding pickups. I really dislike HBs, Strat and JM pickups.
I'm not 'new' to guitar... but now that I'm retired, I have a lot more time to get better. I like to keep things simple... my goal is to get the most music out of the least gear. Are there any youtube channels or lessons websites for a regular guy like me? pic not related, my favorite player Jeff Skunk Baxter

Nobody gets to the highest echelons by doing everything. You need to specialize and bring in other people. If you want to be a great guitar player you have to play guitar, not fix guitar, not worry about sound mixing, you play the guitar, maybe you write the music too but thats it. All that time and energy spent elsewhere should've been put into playing guitar, because if you aren't someone else is.
>>127290153I blame this whole board for giving stupid advice
Filing your own frets is not a job you're supposed to do, its a job for a luthier
>>127290218well i don't think it takes much practice to work on your instrument outside of doing invasive repairs like neck resets but yes you really need to specialize into only a few things in guitar. many of the great players have said so themselves. tommy emmanuel said if you want to be a great finger style player you can't play much else. i think tony rice said the same thing for flatpicking. the more advanced you become physically whether that is weightlifting or dexterous techniques like guitar playing, the slower it is to progress and the quicker you lose progress when not practicing
>>127290153you're removing too much material. need to check your progress intermittently. unless you just have a really shitty guitar
>>127290153This doesn't even make sense. lmao, stay away from the fretboard dude you and logic don't have a good relationship.

>>127290153You don't file them individually.
You have to file them all at once with a leveling beam.
Today while playing I came to the realization that people with money are always buying gear and its more exciting to play when you have a nice selection of amps and guitars so you are always playing the best players have $$$$$
>he bought a guitar without consulting an astrologer
On a second look it seems my guitar is beyond repair (I posted about it yesterday).
I'm broke. No job. Guitar audio jack not functioning, neither does the audio cable. Still good to practice I guess.
>>127290618just break into someone's house and steal their guitar. It's as easy as figuring out who has a nice guitar and just waiting for them to leave, breaking a window, entering the home and taking their guitar. You can also take jewelry, electronics, all kinds of shit. You aren't working, what is stopping you? A fucking RACCOON could figure this out but they aren't strong enough to break windows
>>127290590I donโt need to bother with that as long as Iโm channeling the energy from the appropriate crystal.
>>127290618If your audio cable isn't working, how do you know the jack is bad?
I think you're just bad at troubleshooting.
>>127290637You must be really funny at parties
>>127290637Fuck you man, you are subhuman if you do this and IRS needs to bust your balls for that. Guitars aren't just instruments to their owners, at least do the right thing and work at a music store or something or get yourself an audio engineering degree or what have you and work that way in the music side of things.
>>127290683NTA you can plug the cable into your amp and touch it if it goes BUZZ When you touch it it works
>>127290683Ok, the audio jack works but you have have to move the cable in odd ways applying pressure on the right side. The cable makes false electric contact too if you don't fold the cable in half (it's 3 meters long)

>>127287631i love the emg 81,reason why i prefer fishmans is just how clear they are.
they get even better when single coil mode/voice3'ing them.
you also got a lot more room to work with when it comes to dynamics vs emg, as in how hard you pick. the emgs are more compressed in their sound, but honestly?
throw them both in a mix and i probably wouldnt be able to tell.
you can also do all kinds of funky setups with the fishmans, inner/outer coils on both pickups, extended top end + voice 3 and all that.
their customer support will literally also make you a diagram for custom setups if you email them some esoteric shit.

Out of curiosity- Iโve got a 2001 RG570.
Itโs got little chips on here and there. Some fret buzz on the 1st fret or 2 I canโt seem to get rid of. Thatโs the big thing.
How much should I be asking for on marketplace?
