Visual artist here (picrel is not mine). What does /metal/ think is missing in either mainstream and/or underground metal cover art nowadays? Although the artwork should compliment the music and not the other way around (Music>Artwork) and discussion on what is missing in the scene from a musical perspective is thus more important I am interested in the visual aspect. Cover art is a first impression of what an album/single is going to be about and needs to communicate in a matter of seconds or less before a potential customer gets exposed to another one when browsing. I have my own vision/opinion on the subject and see some "gaps in the market" of 2025 and beyond but I am curious as to what /metal/ thinks. If possible, keep it as basic as possible.

>>127308226terrance hobbs uses dm super distortions, probably dont need to spend that much really. This is one of my favorite solos. First of all it actually has a melody, a variation of the verse vocal melody, almost complementing it. It also has plenty of technical ornamentation, but it's mostly carried by the melody. All in all a memorable solo.

>>127309541>They're way off, Sabbath has a much thicker and lower sound. very well, i concede. listening to into the void and satori side-by-side, sabbath's has a lot more low-end and the riffs are chunkier.
>Also the chugging Children of the Grave like I already showed is like Power Metal 15 years later.i see a vague similarity but i'd say the first proto-power metal song is a light in the black by rainbow, with the first actual power metal song being kill the king in '78

Negru has cool taste in metal
Coming out of nowhere to praise the solo from Nova Era is daring and based, and I think Angra got a bit forgotten and underrated, so it's nice seeing them getting some love

>>127309633not a doubt in my mind that the omen song lifts that riff from children of the grave, but uspm (with few exceptions) isn't the same kind of music as eupm. when i think of power metal i think of shit like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiX_931OCog&pp=ygUZcHJldHR5IG1haWRzIGZ1dHVyZSB3b3JsZA%3D%3D
How many of you heterosexuals would eat Lita Ford's box? She's 66.
>>127306119The three style I really dislike is whatever Colony by In Flames is. I'm sure more people have come to find that appealing as it grows less common, but it always looked like ass to me.
The digital hodge-podge style of the early 2000s, which looked like a hidden object game of different elements thrown together in photoshop.
And OP itt.

>>127306853Kantor can be great, but I wish he practiced some quality control, both in his art and for who he makes it for. He's done great shit for Virus, Anacrusis, and others, and then he'll paint a Venom Prison cover, associating his art with dogshit.
Girardi is also artistically distinct but his pieces and their subjects are incredibly muted, dull, and messy. That can be a strength, but it's often a weakness. Most of the Inquisition reissue artworks are dreadful. A lot of his good works are still just "good for Girardi".
>>127306920This. It's a weakness in Kantor, Girardi, and others. A necessary rejection of Photoshop vomit covers of the past, but now it's become its own cliché.

Here are some of my favorite album covers. Most of them are also albums I like. As you can see I like powerful warriors with swords, or just stuff that looks cool like Stratovarius's Infinite, or And then there was silence. Symphony of Enchanted Lands isn't an amazing album cover but it looks like something from Heroes III, and just by looking at it you know what you're in for.
For the last spot I was going to put an album cover that had an 18th century aristocrat playing chess against a poor man with a tricorne hat, who is obviously losing and outclassed, but I can't remember the name of the album or band.
