I’ve been having trouble getting my artificial harmonics on the low e to ring out, and it just so happens I’ve been having intermittent signal which I thought was a bad cable but I replaced my cable and it’s still happening. I’m wondering if the reason my artificial harmonics aren’t ringing on the low strings (I’m hitting them they just aren’t loud and don’t squeal under amplification) is because I have some kind of a wiring problem. Taking it to my luthier tomorrow and he’s going to check it out and see what is causing the issue whether it’s a cold solder on my bridge pickup or an input jack problem. I have no problem with punch harmonics on the high strings. My guitar does sound kind of weak and trebly on the bass strings when I’m playing power chords. So idk. I hope it’s just the wiring and the Duncan distortions aren’t a shitty as I thought they were. That way I don’t have to buy new pickups.

Good job on buying the coiled complete book. I had to buy mine separately books 1, 2 and 3 and they don't lay flat on my stand so I have to use butterfly clips or similar to keep the book open as it wants to close all the time. It could also be from a not straight neck. Best bet is to take it in for a setup. But it can be costly. Show the technician exactly what you want done. Make sure if you want action settings adjusted to find an instrument in the shop that has what you like as a reference. Otherwise the technician does it arbitrarily on what THEY like not what YOU might like. You can get plenty of how to setup a guitar books on the Interweb. Annas-Archive dot org has plenty. Correctly setting up a guitar is more than turning a truss rod. You can fuck up your instrument if it's not done correctly.

low nut will only buzz open strings
not enough relief will buzz or fret out 2-7th frets
too much relief will fret out 15th+
too low action will buzz everywhere but worse with harder strums or more on the lower frets
high fret will buzz only on certain frets on certain strings or more often completely fret out and cause a dead note

the only way this stuff is ever gonna be useful is if you can get it down small enough/dumb enough to run clientside on ppls own machines. and have it not melt your computer of course.
think like bonzi buddy, but not literal malware, and you can train it do whatever YOU want, not whatever grok feels like at that particular moment. it would be an AI tool that you trained yourself, to do exactly what you want. you can get to instantly do all the tedious shit you dont wanna do on your DAW etc

i can think of all numbers of applications of this tech, but none of them want to hear it because itll be way harder to monetize it that way.

It's worth it. But make sure the shop you go to isn't TOOOO busy or the technician won't listen to you and/or rush the job and take your money and you'll still be pissed at the instrument AND the shop tech/company. If the vibe you get from the tech is rushed or non sympathetic, then don't leave your instrument with them. Go elsewhere. This is a relationship you're building with these guys that will last a long time if they do a good job...you'll probably go with them in the future and maybe even be inclined to buy more instruments/gear from them in future too.

this is good advice. unfortunately great shops will be too busy which sucks for just getting a reliable setup as they expect you to leave the instrument with them the entire time which can take months. it would be awful to be without an instrument that long
Anonymous No.127319815
>>127319726
This is true. I have 2 expensive guitars out of my collection I hate because I took them in to a busy shop to be adjusted for action settings. They did the adjustment but both are now TOO low. Didn't get to talk to anyone or try it out in the store before walking out...so they did the work but it's not to my satisfaction. I would have been better off not getting it done at all in my case.

Anyhow, you get what I'm putting down here. Unfortunately setups done by others are like rolling the dice. Things you don't realize when you first buy an instrument is how they actually play and feel not just how they sound.

Good luck man. Hope you get a good shop/tech and you're satisfied.

My used ibanez has never been as good as when I first picked it up from guitar center. I've finally understood how to set up a guitar decently, but it's still not perfect. I ended up raising the action because of the worn frets. I'd love to have it super low. Then again, I'd like some sustain... (it already has shit sustain). No further adjustments are to be made.

The thing with these smaller amps is that you can daisy chain them up to a more powerful setup in the future. So your sound gets dialed in using this smaller amp, you can then connect it to a bigger setup for power and projection should you ever wish to gig. Or you could always trade it in in future on more powerful gear or a different brand. You can further modify your "sound" by using pedals and effects so the amp is what blasts the sound out primarily so don't get too fixated on features.

I leave my guitar with a shop that takes 3-10 days on average to return my guitar because they build custom instruments and are also licensed repair techs for fender and Gibson products. I know I can take my guitars there and tell them to give me a factory setup and the guitar will come out exactly as it’s supposed to be by manufacturer spec. They charge 75 for a standard guitar and 150 for a Floyd but it’s worth it to at least get one good setup on the guitar when I buy it. Then at least I know my nut is filed correctly, my frets are level, pickups are at the correct height, neck relief is in spec, bridge and string heights are in spec, and I can adjust things from there if I need to down the line. I usually only pay for the first setup and then do all intonation / neck relief adjustments etc myself from there on.

Seller messaged me with tracking today, this is the most hyped I’ve been for a guitar in a while and I’ve bought a lot of guitars this year, really good ones. I’m probably overhyping it a bit, and being a Jag it will require TLC to get playing in an optimal state, but I’ve been there before and have a good deal of experience with setting up finicky fender offsets at this point. For me it’s all about the finish and matching headstock on this one, I’m 3/5 for Fiesta Red fenders w/ matching headstocks. Just need a Tele and to paint the headstock on my Noventa JM. I know a guy who paints them and does a great job with paint/finish matching, I’m going to pester him for tips.

Chord shapes are a lot easier and quicker in notation, plus you're getting pitch and rhythm info at the same time. No matter how good you get with tab, you will never be able to sight read like someone who is fluent in notation. And 9/10 the notation reader understands more about music. That said, notation takes a while to be comfortable with and requires continual use. It might not be worth the squeeze depending on what you're trying to do. Want to explore jazz or classical anything? Notation. Want to improvise over 12 bar blues or play Iron Maiden? Probably not necessary.

i don't believe that for a second. tabs literally tell you exactly where to put your fingers. with music notation you have to translate the note to the position onto the guitar.

I can only speak from experience. Chord shapes become instantaneous after a little bit. Tab is quicker at first but slower in the long run.

>>127323491
Yeah, but then you're reading the rhythm separately. Notation will let you read both at the same time. Notation readers can take an admirable crack at a song they haven't ever heard before. Tab guys are going to have to sit there for a bit and figure it out first. Whether that's important to you is a different story.

Since it’s just a matte finish would paint thinner be enough to take the paint off or do you think I’d need to sand it as well? I’d probably just give it a coat in mineral oil when I’m done. Seeing as the neck is already unfinished maple and it has a pick guard it shouldn’t be too difficult to do. I thought about maybe spray painting it flat white but we’ll see.

I used to regular /akg/ before it was /akg/ and long before threads were numbered but left with all the regulars maybe like six years ago and haven’t been back. The AK world is gay af with all kinds of cringe guns now, back in my day they were cheap beater rifles the cool AR homos didn’t want and you prided yourself on breaking 922r and having clone correct builds, now AKs are just more expensive but shittier AR equivalent coomed over by the same AR fags. Tarkov killed AKs. Back in my day you’d buy a tin a 1080 rounds for a hundred bucks and magdump into trash and dirt before throwing your rifle into a pond to clean it out, now the kids buy $500 rails for their AKs and are legitimately upset when they get the tiniest scratch on their rifle aka it’s gay now

Ah, the observation that “strings around the middle fret feel really loose” immediately invites us into a layered and multi-faceted conversation one that transcends mere technical diagnosis and instead wades into the deep waters of history, tactile perception, and the peculiar, almost symbiotic relationship between a guitarist and their instrument. While on the surface, one might think this is a matter of simple string tension and perhaps an aging fretboard, the truth or at least the discussion demands far more narrative winding than any brisk, utilitarian answer could ever satisfy.
To begin, we must acknowledge the subjective nature of “looseness.” For some, a slightly forgiving string response near the seventh or ninth fret may be an intentional design choice, offering a certain suppleness for blues bends or vibrato flourishes. For others, this sensation may be a symptom perhaps of decades of wood expansion and contraction, or of frets worn just enough to shift the feel without entirely undermining playability. The age of the guitar, as you note, complicates matters further, for time has a way of whispering into the very fibers of the neck and subtly altering the tension profile in ways no factory specification sheet could fully anticipate.
Anonymous No.127326318
Furthermore, we must also consider the human hand. Perception of tension can vary depending on posture, angle of attack, and the accumulated micro-fatigue in tendons and muscles something we rarely account for when diagnosing “normal” versus “abnormal.” One player’s “loose” is another’s “buttery smooth,” and the guitar itself cannot be divorced from the player’s unique bio-mechanical conversation with it.
Add to this the vast network of potential contributing factors string gauge, scale length, truss rod condition, bridge placement, humidity exposure, string wear, and even the slight variances in winding tightness from one set to the next and we find ourselves in a labyrinth of possibilities where any single, definitive answer would be almost a disservice to the mystery.
Ultimately, the question of normalcy becomes slippery. “Normal” according to whom? The manufacturer? The luthier who last adjusted it three owners ago? The community of players whose own instruments span decades and continents in design and feel? Your guitar, particularly as an “old” one, may be carrying the ghost of its own long musical life every scrape, every seasonal shift, every set of hands it’s passed through contributing to the looseness you now feel.
Anonymous No.127326326
In short, while there are certainly mechanical explanations to be investigated, it is equally possible that your strings, in their current state, are merely telling you the story of the guitar as it is, not as it once was or “should” be. Whether that story calls for adjustment, repair, or simply acceptance… well, that is for you and the guitar to decide together.

I think I see CAR but I don’t know. Carvin acoustics don’t have the same headstock design looking through google images.

Yep that’s this, thanks! Google images has them with the same headstock shape and font. I knew it wasn’t going to be anything half decent but these are like sub $200 shitters, gonna pass. I get excited seeing guitar stuff at estate sales cuz I think I’m gonna find grandpa’s hidden gem for cheap but it’s always shitter guitars.

Never get you hopes too high but meanwhile pickups really are an upgrade if you're switching them from chinesium stock pickups.
Depends, at some price range, considering the woodwork isn't that much different between an entry-level guitar and a midrange, and it's mostly an improvement of the hardware, so let's say for a ~750€ guitar the pickups are sometimes decent sometimes worth changing. For a budget guitar I would definitely change the pickups and you'll hear huge benefits. For an expensive guitar or a big brand guitar I would consider changing pickups a last resort if you're not happy with your toan, I'd rather switch amps or plugins or pedals or whatever that's less than the price of a set of pickups as that would more drastically change the toan.
Two pickups, or three singles, they quickly amount to almost 400€. You can get a boutique pedal or a decent amp head or a more than luxurious speaker for that price. But if you own a shitplank and it sounds like shit, changing pickups would even be a priority in my opinion, you will definitely hear the difference.

Got a pedalboard and EQ today, shed setup is nearly complete. I'm going to buy a Digitech Drop and compressor eventually but I just found out you can use the Boss Tone Studio on the Katana to pitch shift down to Eb standard which is pretty neat

I just looked them up on Google and the first result was a Reddit thread about some guy wanting the change the magnet inside the IBZ6. The most updooted reply was a guy just telling OP to just fuckin' change the pickup altogether.
I have no experience with DiMarzio, my guitar teacher uses them on his Ibanez's (he is sponsored by them), I guess they sound good. I'm refraining from shilling any brand here, because even though I have a favourite brand, I found even fucking literally-who brands from some guy in his garage that cost 20€ on eBay can sound better than most stock pickups.
So... Depends of the guitar too, are you willing to invest money, time and energy into your shitplank? Or do you want it to sound better or the way you like it?
In Europe I can shill you Warman Guitars, their pickups cost literally 20 bucks (more like 30-40€) but they drastically change the tone enough that you can find satisfaction in them. They make low-output warm pickups: singles, P90s, humbuckers, P90-humbuckers, etc. And they make edgy high-output metal pickups, etc. It's not Seymour Duncan but on a shitplank it's pretty cool.
And on the other hand, you could sell your pair of IBZ6 on eBay or Reverb, I see they go away for like 40-50€.

So yeah, in conclusion, if I were you, considering you have a baby's first guitar Ibanez, I'd try lesser known pickup brands see what they offer see what output you want and what toan profile you'd enjoy. Measure the output and take notice of the magnets, then go from there see what you'd enjoy.

Changing pickups is not the same as changing amps but it gives a very noticeable momentum when you got them right you want them.

I’d sell it for 600 shipped. It’s in pretty goood condition minus a few minor blemishes. Full professional setup on 9-42’s E standard factory spec. Plays like a dream, I just don’t care for pink all that much or the Duncan distortions. I don’t play a ton of metal. Basically I’d trade for a charvel in white or a color I like more with JB/59 in it. Or something equivalent.

>>127328376
Actually idk it might be more of a hassle than it’s worth to ship. I don’t even have any boxes or packing material. I might keep it because it plays so nice, but I’ll eventually want to swap the pickups and repaint or sand it down to natural. If it were snow white with a black pick guard and JB/59 it would be perfect.
