/aug/ Aussie Underground General
The first Aussie Underground General: a thread for the posting and discussion of Australian underground music past and present.

I made this thread last week about the aus underground scene in the 90s/00s and it was pretty well received:

https://boards.4chan.org/mu/thread/127293015#bottom

It was suggested in >>127346667 that we keep doing this and make it into a general of sorts. I have a lot more from the 90s/00s I can keep posting, as well as earlier and later stuff too. It would be cool if any aussie posters here shilled their current projects or their friends too.

What else would you want to see in an aussie general thread? Should we have any rules?

Pic in OP is Alps - Alps of New South Wales (2006) again for anyone who might recognise the last thread in the catalog. Album on yt here: https://youtu.be/4EJkNrfq4eA?feature=shared

Does anyone have a copy of Alps of New South Whales (2009) or know where to find it online to dl/stream?

Most popular post in last thread was the Sandpit album. Here is the full single Greater Expectations (1998) with B-sides. Jangely/angular/mathy indie guitar pop band, kind of like Polvo I guess

Now we're not limited to 90s/00s I'll post some older stuff too. The first track "Help" is the pinnacle of aussie underground pop music. Jangely guitar track that would have fit in with the stuff that came out of Flying Nun in NZ not long after

Off Minor / St Albans Kids - split 7" (2004)

Off Minor were a seppo band (ex Saetia) that made the effort to tour aus when few other emoviolence bands did. They released this split with St Albans Kids, the older band of Love Like... Electrocution singer Tom that was active in 2001-2002. Probably first Orchid-style band from Australia

Great band live and EP holds up musically but I find it lyrically to be very cringe, especially the repurposed Henry Miller "This is not a band" rant

I am once again recommending Talkshow Boy. Last thread I posted WAIPMOT, my favourite TB album, but his most popular album, Testosterone, is also really good. Bitpop, Electropop, check it out!!

Zond - Zond (2010). Melbourne shoegaze/noise rock/heavy psychedelic. The songwriting and some of the riffs kind of leave a lot to be desired but the sound makes up for it. Last gig posted on FB was 2017 so I'm assuming they're defunct at this point.

Choam is the best track off their s/t

Aktion Unit, Melbourne psych-drone-noise-rock type deal. They drone really well but it kinda falls apart when they get drums or vocals on imo, but they still have lots of good stuff. I think one of the guys played/plays with the Garbage and the Flowers as well

Solid albums these two. Its around six bucks for all their stuff on bandcamp as well

Speaking of the Garbage and the Flowers, I know they were posted in the last thread but this live version of Carousel is so good it deserves to be specifically highlighted. Amazing drone-pop.

Great album. There's also a split 12" Zond did with Hi God People that is very good but seemingly unavailable online. I was just looking for it and found a ton of Hi God People footage (but no recordings) which is all very absurd performance art costumed nonsense. Very strange and funny band. Here they are opening for Sonic Youth https://youtu.be/gwW8BJst7h8?feature=shared

For an actually properly active band here's Grinding Eyes from Sydney, gazey psych rock. Probably my favourite live band in Syd, they play louder than anyone else does at the moment. I try and catch every show. They released an album earlier this year its its breddy gud, they did the show for the promo tour at the fucking Trocadero Room which is the worst imaginable venue for their sound but whatever.

My favourite track of theirs: https://youtu.be/Xin-oM5oX2U
From the new record: https://youtu.be/QXbqaljUDMU

I've spent entire days trying to find that split to absolutely no avail. The best is this seller from sweden which has previews but not full tracks https://www.borft.com/product/split-lp/

Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood. NSW free-folk band very much in line with what was going on in the US at the time. They had a record on Celebrate Psi Phenomenon which is cool

Do you know how active of a band they are? I like some of their recordings and I wouldn't mind seeing them live

Also probably the last from me on this run, I gotta do some other stuff. I might come back later

Back in the day, used to be street press, zines, forums, word of mouth, other shows, record stores (Rocking Horse, Repressed, Missing Link) radio stations (4ZZZ, 2ser, FBi, RRR). All of that is still around except street press and zines. Not sure where to look online anymore. Hoping some zoomers post sone current stuff in here worth checking out

FBi is basically unlistenable now. Just doof doof crap and fag rap and hyperpop for the most part. 2ser is still good at least
