I asked yesterday in the other thread if there were any Severed Heads fans floating around here and didn't get a bite. Pretty surprising tbqhwy. Thought /mu/ would be all over this band. Industrial/synth/experimental/dance/etc music from the 1970s onwards. Big back catalog, I just realised a lot of it is on a bandcamp Tom made now. I have the VOD boxset (picrel) which their earlier and weirder stuff.

Here's Canine, the other best active band in Sydney at the moment. Stonery sludgy d-beat-laden powerviolence type deal. Super tight band, I try and catch every time they play live

I'm not super tapped in because there's not a whole heap that's super worth seeing, but I know Prop gallery/records in Ashfield does shows though they're not usually that interesting. Lord Gladstone Hotel in chippendale has a gig/gallery space that takes anyone, and again its not that interesting. There's also Lazy Thinking record shop/cafe that does a lot of gigs in Dulwich Hill which also takes fkn anyone and again its pretty mediocre.

Sydney zoomer scene is very DJ/electronic/doof focused at the moment so rock/pop/folk/experimental stuff is really dry and suffering at the moment. Lot of posturing/image first and music second. Most bands just play the newtown/marrickville beer-sponsored pubs/venue circuit and its just boring alt/indie. At least there's sydneymusic.net now which is a godsend despite the dearth of good live music

Have you been around long enough to remember Sound & Fury Records? Was on Bourke St around 2004-2007ish if memory serves correctly. Carried very weird stock & had a space that held some very cool shows for a while. Also ran a label briefly that released stuff like Castings, Yellow Swans, and the vinyl version of the Alps of New South Wales LP in OP pic

Speaking of Castings, their Yvonne Ruve space held a ton of good shows - as did other spaces in Hibernian House - over most of the first decade of the millenium

I'm an '05 Zoomer so that's wayyy before my time. These days I find repressed is best for the experimental stuff, also this newer one in Glebe/Forest Lodge up from the Officeworks 19th Nervous Breakdown has good stuff, lots of Dead C.

What was the deal with Hibernian house? I know it was a big deal at a certain point but I never hear of anything going on there, did anything happen that changed it?

Castings are good, speaking of Australian stuff in that genre, how much do you know about Brassskulls? I've only managed to find a tiny amount on soulseek but it's pretty interesting

Sydney/NSW seems to have had a pretty interesting experimental/unconventional music scene that I completely missed. Any more good artists I should check out and where to find the music (cause even slsk can be pretty bare)

I moved years ago, I don't know what happened to Hibernian House. Maybe another anon will drop by and fill us in? Frequency Labs was the other space I went to a bunch.

I saw Brassskulls at least once, Newcastle kid I think, I don't know what happened to him.

I'll and dig up more nsw experimental stuff from around then, I have a big box of cdrs and tapes but I don't know what has active links, I'll do some digging, might not be tomorrow and the thread will probably be archived overnight again but we'll see

Pretty boring at the pub rn (but at least the beers are cheap on a Monday) so I'm scrolling youtube for stuff for you

Haven't listened to this yet - newish (2023), but it's Matthew P Hopkins, he played in Naked on the Vague, Vincent over the Sink, Half High, The Bowles, which were all good to wach at the time, and his solo stuff was usually good too, probably worth heading out if you see him on a bill

Too loud at the pub to listen (spiderbait on the speakers) so I'm going to check this one out tomorrow and leave it here

Cheers mate, I'll give it all a listen when I get home. Tbqh I never realised that Australia (or rather Sydney/NSW) had much of a scene for this sort of thing until I really started digging last year, I think it's all dead now and all the "experimental" music is just boring Necks imitators.

I went to visit some friends in Melbourne and they took me to some weeknight shows which had some pretty decent Zoomer drone/noise/shoegaze/improv acts. Maybe the go is to move there?

Regardless hopefully the pendulum for Australian youth musically moves away from doof doof and back to rock/pop/folk based forms so we can see more experimentation in that field

No worries mate, I'll post some more stuff too

Don't move to Melbourne. City of bootlickers and pretentious wankers. Never forget what they tolerated from Dan Andrews during covid

The Necks were(/are?) awesome though, no one can imitate them

I went to a noise show here in melb a few years ago with Cock Safari on the bill. I left before they came on but as I was waiting for the tram I could hear them start from outside the bar since it was so loud lmao.

Idk if it really counts as underground if he plays internationally at art/music festivals etc but Marco Fusinato is one of my aussie """experimental""" heroes. Caught him live almost a year ago and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen, picrel. He played something like a six-hour set five days in a row of nothing but guitar noise.

Some overseas anons would know Oren at least through Sunn O)))

Was trying to find good footage to share and ended up watching this thing that was on telly about him. Hilarious. Apparently he did some songs with Death Grips lmao

Dude plays a piece of glass and cuts his face up. It's brutal the first time you see it if you don't know it's coming

Reasonably good musically if you like noise shit. Dude has been around and playing so long people in the scene called him grandpa back in early 00s
