>>127365526>>127365502>avoid memorizing 50 specific chord shapesOk. Iโm guessing this is because the chords can be made in several ways but isnโt knowing some standard ones helpful?
Also I heard people say to learn all the notes on the fretboard, Iโm guessing that that is sound advice, right?
>>127365585I mean nobody said anything about being mindless. But usually learning scales I know is an exercises that is usually done on piano, or progressive sight reading exercises, so arenโt there things like that here?
>>127365599>learn all the notes on the fretboardyou don't need actually do this intentionally
if you know the notes in TET, you just need to know enough notes on the fretboard that you can just count up and down a fret or two from each to know which each note is. eventually that will organically turn into knowing most of the notes on the fretboard.
>>127365599tony polecastro is a great teacher; it doesn't matter how good someone can play if they're a bad teacher. watch some of his videos to see if his learning style resonates with you. by his own admission he says his courses are designed for people who just want to log in, spend 20 minutes on a lesson and not have to think about what to practice every day and get them playing music asap instead of doing technique drills for weeks before even strumming a chord. he has a youtube channel under the same name just look at some of the sample lessons. justin guitar is good too but he's only an average teacher in my opinion
>>127365599>Also I heard people say to learn all the notes on the fretboardI know how to figure out what note is on the fretboard, but I can't tell you INSTANTLY what 9th note on the 4th string is
>>127365623you talked enough buddy, at the end of the day find something you want to play and get it done
>>127365636also you should really narrow down what you want to play. if you know you want to play finger style i honestly wouldn't even ever bother learning to play with a pick and find a course built around that.
Hey guys I have an Epiphone EB 0 bass, pretty much pic related, and I want to do have it modded out. I love the way the neck feels stock and I dig the SG shape but there are definite improvements that can be done. What do ya'll think of these upgrades?
Hipshot Supertone Bridge (Stock bridge is awful, doesn't allow for individual string setup)
Hipshot Ultralite Tuners (neck dive fix to some degree)
916 Neo EB pickup (more articulate and less muddy than stock by far)
Graphtech Tusq/Tusq XL nut (to replace the crappy plastic one)
After the upgrades I want to get it refinished in a nice dark British Racing Green. What do ya think /gg/? What would be the optimal order to get these mods done in?

>>127365677LISTEN TO THIS ADVICE! You kinda have to decide one day where you want to focus your attention. There are styles like slide guitar (blues generally), fingerstyle guitar (more classical but not just limited to that - blues has a lot of fingerstyle guitar. Anything can be made modified into fingerstyle guitar with effort). And figure out your music genre...Rock, Metal, Country, Blues, Folk, etc...there are lots. And focus on that STYLE of learning. There is no magic method to get you good at all styles.
In the end, you just have to pick up the guitar regularly and noodle. Train your hands, brain and ears and try to not rely upon your eyes so much. They slow you down.
It's a lifelong addiction man. If you get addicted like all of us, it will be with you for life. Most people quit though. Their instruments just collect dust. Their money pissed away...
So it's up to you. What you got bro?
>>127365783I play every day for at least an hour lol! I just want to treat myself to something nice and I have a sentimental attachment to the bass as well as really enjoying it for what it is. Pic rel is the color I'm looking at getting it refinished in.
>>127365291What's gay is not knowing how to quote while taking said quote out of context
>>127365765YES to bridge upgrade, EB bridges suck
Yes to pickup upgrade
Maybe on the nut? Have someone experienced do that
No on the tuners, the weight won't be that different unless they're locking tuners
>>127365838I wish you luck, you got this you seem to know what you're doing.
>>127365789Like your passion lad! I just want to focus on the basics to start off with. First goal is to be able to figure out popshit by ear then Iโll hopefully have more knowledge to know where to go. All those you listed might be an option with the exception of country lol sorry cowboys.
Yeah I know itโs the little you do everyday that counts thats why I wanted to get some structure cause otherwise I just waste time doing unproductive things.
Gonna get my explorer re-painted and neck changed to satin hopefully by the end of the month. Also will change the bridge rings to chrome rings. Gonna look SICK
>>127365891Whoa, Explorer is a rare sight. Very nice.
>>127365854There's really not that much weight to be saved on the tuners? That's a bummer. I might just do them anyways because the stock ones look like giant elephant ears. Seriously, things are massive, and I prefer a Y-shape to clover in general.
>>127365871I do think JustinGuitar is great for newbs. He's a likable guy and funny, personable. I think you'd enjoy his teachings. But yes, you need structure. I'd personally pay for his courses through his website as they are structured there from ground zero and progress accordingly. He doesn't talk out his ass and bore you.
His stuff is available online if you know where to look. YouTube if full of stuff too but again, no structure and random. Not good. To get yourself out of bed everyday and into a routine, I'd spend the money for a few months via his website. It's not like you're forced to being in it longterm or anything. But you won't be a great guitar player after 30 days. So give it a few months. But start with 30 days. See how you do.
Get a stress ball to build up your left hand (squishing it while watching TV or something). It helps build hand strength, yours will get sore at first. You're going to get sore fingers too until you build up calluses on your left hand. It's the right of passage for playing guitar...
>>127365650Then what skill have you learned on the guitar?
>talked enoughThatโs not helpful.
I donโt have something to play that is easy enough nor do i see how it will help. Give some songs if you have instead.
>>127365871PS, I posted a link in /wsr/ for a much more traditional structured course. It's kind of an abortion laid out on that page on purpose. But it is a structured, proven method...but it's traditional music notation based. It's kind of hard. But kids do it and if they can do it, you can do it too. It's NOT JustinGuitar. But it is a well respected and proven traditional method.
>>>/wsr/1536382
>>127365909you can save a ton of weight with hipshot uktralite tuners. if you want to end your neck dive just get a 5" wide strap. i think the HUL tuners feel a little too cheap for my tastes. they are mostly plastic. i have a gibson sg bass
>>127365909Lighter tuners won't hurt but a better fix is a leather underside strap with lots of grip
Some people even move the strap button to the headstock to stop dive
>>127365926Yeah I know it will take a while, was trying to learn intervals using a site but was mot making progress and then tried to search for how people do it and saw people arguing about the method so I knew I needed basically a workout routine laid out for me.
>stressballLol might as well just mess around on the guitar at that point, thatโs the great thing about it that you can just have it with you anywhere. Could just practice while on the toilet and make progress that way lol.
>>127365971Iโll have a look. Could mix them with other things when I get bored. What do you mean by abortion?
>>127366007I've heard of moving the button to the top horn but never to the headstock, that seems extreme! But yeah, my current strap while nice is not one of those super grippy uncured leather ones that I've heard people raging about. Any recommendations for strap brands?
>>127366037the older fenders have a hootenanny button. i think this is because the country artists used guitars that didn't have a strap button and used a lanyard around the headstock so they wanted to match
>>127366019>re: abortionThe linked to thread I posted.
I'm posting links to pirated material others put online. It's not really well regarded to do that so I'm not making it easy for anyone to get that course. Have to work for it kind of thing...
There are easier ways to obtain those ebooks. Individual books. Annas-archive dot org. That is all I'll say about that. I bought mine, individually.
>>127366037this is like the martin d18 of bass straps. everyone has one

>>127366070for me, it's the hoedown post
Some simple routines.
>Mechanical practice
Spider exercise, 4 notes per string, let each note ring into the next, alternate pick if using a pick. Go up and down, reverse it. Once this is simple start skipping strings.
>Ear training
Hum a random note and then play it on your guitar, play a random note on your guitar and hum it, this syncs your hands to your brain you'll eventually be able to find any pitch fast just like you can hum any pitch you want without really thinking about it.
>Theory
Learn major, minor, pentatonic and blues.
Learn all 5 boxes of the pentatonic and you can literally play 99.99% of guitar.
>>127366112That's a dope strap. Could play all day with that sucker I bet.
>>127366117no this here's a hootenanny
>>127365933>Then what skill have you learned on the guitar?well I initially learned to play a few of the songs I liked until I realized that only memorizing songs does not mean you know music
if you want to hear a sad song I can play you one, if you want a brighter one I can play it, if you want a melancholic one I can play, if you want a scarry song I can play it for you. But usually I get bored after 10-15 minutes and switch the mood and practice
it doesn't get any simpler than that for me
I can get all technical and say that I know how to get all the chord progressions and notes for all the 7 modes of the diatonic scale starting on any root note but it's disingenuous, I just practice what sound I like
also practicing now speed drills to increase my lead guitar capability
>>127365933>Give some songs if you have instead.find a song YOU like first
first songs I ever learned were these ones, they are good beginner tunes

>>127366125I like this post. Agreed!
>>127366125Noooooice.
Iโve already been doing that ear training, along with playing a note humming it and then humming the next semi tone up or tone or humming along a whole chord and then playing the last note to see how close I was.
>spiderIโll look it up
>theoryWhat do you mean by learn those scales? Like practice them up and down on the guitar? Do you get good at jumping into a scale at a random note by doing that cause it seems like youโd just get good at the sequence, if you get what I mean.
>>127366191practice them up and down at first to memorize them, then play them musically, pick a few of your favorite notes from the scale and only play those.
I don't really practice my scales up and down anymore I really swing them and jumble them.
Once you have all the basics learned you can mix and match them depending on your mood if you are improvising. Some of the coolest solos mix major and minor.
>>127363809Those guitars probably feel sticky

>>127366181>well I initially learned to play a few of the songs I liked until I realized that only memorizing songs does not mean you know musicWell yeah youโre just a performing monkey at that point, that why I said I donโt see how it would help. How did you progress into your current state?

>>127366386Sorry to interrupt your conversation here...but keep in mind, you're learning a new language from scratch. Music is a language of communication through sound via your hands and brain.
It's very hard to learn another spoken language quickly without first understanding that languages alphabet. Forming and knowing words which have relevant context and meaning. How to form them into sentences to tell a story. Then conversations.
Anyhow, music and specifically guitar, is learning to speak and write and think and hear and understand a new language. It's going to take time to figure it all out. A parrot or monkey that's memorized stuff is still useful when you're trying to understand what you're doing. A baby mimics at first until they can speak. Then they learn to read. Then write.
If you understood the music you were playing at a theoretical level (why they chose those chords in the song (the progression), how to finger those chords. Why are they playing the notes they're playing in the solos and the melody for example. How are those chords formed...
Anyhow you get what I'm putting down here. You're going to be a monkey or parrot for a while. It's totally fine. Only a full course and practice will start to link all this stuff together into something that makes you a good guitar player.
OK, I'll shut up now. Good luck man. Guitar is a fun ride...
