Seven or eight years ago I went through a period of selling off all but the most necessary gear and Iโ€™m having that bug again. Iโ€™ve got ten electrics and I canโ€™t play them all at once, even though I donโ€™t dislike any of them. Iโ€™m thinking about thinning the herd to at least half that. At the end of the day there are three or four that I pick up regularly and the rest only when Iโ€™m specifically in the mood for that guitar, but at the same time itโ€™s hard to sell something that you donโ€™t dislike and that you have no problems with. Part of me thinks I should put some in their cases and put them away until I actually want to play them and the other part of me thinks I should sell and get one or two nice pieces of gear instead. Iโ€™ve been thinking about picking up a nice specโ€™d out Custom Shop Tele or a nice D28 or a Benson amp, and selling gear could easily fund some of that.

Do guitars go out of being properly intonated as strings get old? A couple of months ago I spent a long time setting up my own guitar for the first time, had it all intonated properly and had the string height adjusted where I like it, but now some strings arenโ€™t intonated and have some fret buzz that wasnโ€™t there before even though I havenโ€™t touched the saddle to cause either of those.

If your strings are old (like blackened) it's time for new strings.
I would change the strings before messing with the truss rod like >>127475939 is alluding to.
If you're willing to shell out a bit more, get some d'addario XS or elixir nanowebs and they'll stay fresh at least twice as long.

collecting midrange shitplanks is retarded because they just end up collecting dust once you settle into having 2-3 favorites. you should definitely sell atleast half of them to finance nicer gear. unless you're touring there's no sense in having multiples (a couple to get beat up on the road and a few to play locally/record with).

How much theory do you need to know to teach beginners? I can play fingerstyle (very fast if needed), learn and play difficult material, write stuff that sounds good, and improvise well enough normies think I'm playing real songs. I also know a fuck ton of chords. But in terms of theory I only really know how keys work and how chords are constructed. More advanced players have said my technique and timing are good. Is that good enough to teach newbies or will I be a shit teacher due to not knowing my theory? I figure most beginners just want to learn songs or jam out.

nah. what gave you that impression? probably male dominated. what instrument is female dominated? they'd all be male majority surely? harp perhaps?

it's just that in the ranks of classical musicians, there's a lot of women too. which seems unusual as there's not many competent female instrumentalists outside of the classical world, much less guitarists.
Anonymous No.127481142

Women tend to excel at staying true to the course they're on, especially if they were pushed into it at an early age like most classical musicians. Rarely do they get a wild hair up their ass to pick up a shitplank to play power chords with the boys at 16yr old unless they're a pick me.
Anonymous No.127481163

> what gave you that impression?
Because I know historically classical guitar was one of the instruments that was seen as "suitable" for women.
For modern day my perception isn't based on facts or data, but anytime I see examples of skilled classical guitar performance and such, like true top level, it's always a woman.
I pull my comparison mainly from piano, where there are women at the top level, but clearly more top level male players.

But yeah as you say, once you leave the world of classical music, highly skilled female instrumentalists seem rare if even existent in some cases.

It was almost closing time when the bell on the door jingled. I turned and saw this absolute hunk. I'm talking hunk, bros. Bulging muscles like marble come to life. He was wearing a sleeveless sack cloth shirt with the name Ornette Coleman written on the front with permanent marker. It looked like he made it himself. With cutoff Zubaz, and a yellow hat that said "you guys seein' this?". His hair was long. Unkempt .The room felt cold as soon as he entered. He didn't say anything. He walked to the acoustic room and picked up a Seagull parlor guitar and started playing a loose version of Round Midnight. I felt transported to another place. A happier place. He saw me listening and winked. All of a sudden he winced and slowly stood up. A stream of liquid sin, turned to a foam as it blasted through the fibers, like a reckoning long known. A sky blue ovation was filled with this putrid mistake. He had no reaction. He half smirked and said to nobody in particular, "I guess there really is no such thing as free jazz...". He walked out without apology. The apology was written by every scar, and every broken heart he caused and received on the road. As he got into his Astro Van, I knew he was fighting for me out there. In the cold and rain. I knew he would be out there somewhere.

Les Pauls attract a certain type of person. It's the habits of the player, not a quality of a Les Paul.

The break angle of the headstock is 100% a contributing factor there are just way fewer Gretsch's in wild, especially being gigged, and the angle is slightly less severe.

i've heard some luthiers say it's falling on the face that does it more so than falling on its back which has some truth to it via that video of the guy jumping on the fretboard and the headstock not breaking. i guess the nut shears it at the weakest spot next to the truss rod cutout

Grats to the op.
Are non standard tunings a real thing or is it just a clutch for people who canโ€™t properly learn guitar so they basically make it easier to play random 5th intervals so it sounds good?
Anonymous No.127484296

much smaller sample size
there's a few hundred gibsons for every gretsch

Robert Fripp has his own with new standard tuning, which seems to work for him.

there are some styles we simply couldn't imagine without alternate tunings such as delta blues and slide guitar. half step down is a crutch for vocalists and drop D tuning is a crutch for players to chug power chords. double drop D can be useful for playing unaccompanied and getting a bigger sound since you can just open strum but it's not far removed from open D tuning. capo is a crutch for bluegrass players and singer songwriters to use familiar chord shapes in new keys but bluegrass players are playing 16th notes at 140bpm+ for entire sets so it's forgivable. they all have their uses

Not always. It serves Outlaw Country well, plus this song by Michael Landau is hardly just power chords:

I don't know why but for some reason I was convinced the chain went from amp to guitar. Even if I realise how stupid that seems. And I was wondering why my od did jack shit after using it with distortion...

it's still a circuit though, not one way. power comes out of the amp, goes through the pedals, into the guitar, guitar creates signal and sends it all back.
