Inspired by a post in a previous thread:
Post two contrasting guitars that you own!
Could be the paint job, number of pickups or any other factor
Here's my contribution, the heaviest guitar I own vs. the lightest guitar that I own

The acoustic bass actually sounds fuckin sick. I thought i would be sending it back but probably not. Although it actually smells like dogshit. Like full on cigarettes and metal. Played a few songs on the acoustic and I dont think I'll be using finger style on it. Seems like a good way to practice picking on bass. Do acoustic basses use different strings than a regular bass? I have some extra bass strings i havent used, seems like a good time to use them.

that used to be a lot more common, I have distinct memories of cig+case smell from different purchases over the years but it's thankfully more of a thing of the past. restaurants went "no smoking" but it took clubs a while to follow suit so even non smoking musicians ended up with that odor caked on their gear.

yeah they usually use bronze strings like acoustic guitar. you can put steel electric strings on them but you lose a ton of volume. personally i think acoustic flat top basses sound and awful and just like a bigger guitar. double basses sound awesome imo

agreed that you shouldnt have to be an insider to know what to buy though, but fender with its factories isnt much better. same with gibson, martin, taylor
they all have stupid details you need to learn in order to get the best instrument

Thanks I'm thinking Peavey max 300 for my amp. Learned how to play guitar on some kind of peavy bass combo cabinet back in the day one of my freinds let me borrow. Been wanting a bass amp since like 2001. Still can't get that kind of tone on a guitar amp. Shit was heavy, even though my only guitar back then was a Silvertone by Samick beginner plank.

Yeah. My criteria is that I want an "evergreen" guitar that matches with any genre from an aesthetic standpoint. If you get a natural finish with a decent body shape, you can get on stage and play anything from black metal to twee pop and you won't look out of place no matter what.

Hey guys, so I bought a couple of these Herco Thumbpicks today (I bought mediums) and holy shit, they're a game changer for me for hybrid picking, fingerpicking and regular picking. Having the ability to not lose your fucking pic inside the soundhole on my acoustics by accident when you need an extra finger for hybrid picking is a real major improvement. We've all lost a pic inside there at some point...flip, spin, clang clang....come on fuck...oh oh oh, there! Got it!
I expected a bit of a learning curve for fingerpicking compared to the super long ass old style thumbpicks (they're ridiculously long and get caught in my strings and I was going to give up learning to fingerpick because of this). I have tried other styles but I hate them all. This is my sweet spot since it's just like a regular pic. The mediums are a bit too flexible in comparison to a Dunlop Tortex Orange (medium - 60mm). I didn't get a chance to try the heavy model as my local shop specially ordered in the mediums. They come in a bunch of colors. I got red and blue. They didn't have black.
Anyhow blah blah blah but you should check them out. I am so happy!!!
Having the pic stay attached to the thumb at all times is super handy. Just gives you that extra confidence that you won't drop it like a retard when you need it most and they're pretty comfortable on the thumb. Won't press on your thumb moons so you'll forget you are wearing it. Look for them at your local shop, if they can't order them in for you then you can find them online too.

But grandpas are cool.
I think because of my large body I don't really vibe with acoustic. I did play it for about 2 hours today. Spent most of the time trying to get comfortable. Standing or sitting both kinda sucked. I really like the sound of the bass, sounds cool with my pedals, I just hate the body size. I picked up my p bass and it just felt right.

TL;DR for a larger body size, avoid Ovations...
You wouldn't like an Ovation since they have round backs and are annoying as fuck sliding around on your clothing unless you have a gel cushion to adhere it to your body. I have an Ovi Custom Balladeer but I don't have a gel cushion. I really want one. Otherwise I love the guitar. The neck is soooo fine. Plugged in they're amazing (10/10). But unplugged the sound is one notch above so so (6/10). Higher end woods are so much sweeter and louder.
You may like a Cole Clark True Hybrid though. Electric and acoustic (true sounding for both) with the flip of a switch. They're not cheap though.

Not necessarily. OM and 000 are actually the same size bodies. But the 000 has a slightly smaller neck, at a Gibson like scale (24" and 3/4). OMs are 25.5 or 25.6 like Fenders.
But after that, the smaller stuff all tends to be the shorter scale.

For example on Piano: I fucking hate river flows in you so much, but it still always works for some reason, especially where my usual repertoire doesn't do anything for the person asking.

drums are cheap yeah. you could pick up a used kit for a couple hundred. if you don't play drums though, you might not realize if parts are missing, maybe the arms that the rack toms mount on or cymbal stands etc. often the skins are beat to shit too, decent skins might hit you for 20-30 bucks a pop.
cymbals are the expensive part. even half-decent stuff like A customs or sabian AA stuff will set you back 100+ used per pie.
if you just wanna learn and beat the hell out of them then you could get a basic setup for 400 or so, including some garbage cymbals

probably the best tuition I saw was on Truefire. I remember when I started people gave me stupid exercises to do which were not in a musical context. It's kinda stupid because you can do chromatic scale up and down the neck like in the truefire vid I saw, which helps you learn the musical relationships as well as build up strength and a callus. Anyway it was some guy who developed a "complete method". wish I had that when I was a kid. I should've learnt music, not patterns and shitty songs outside of their musical context.

Was thinking of those actually since I use them on my Jackson but I don't really want them on the lp. They're just too thick for some of the stuff I wanna play on it, just adds needless strain on the fingers.

yeh not a bad idea. I guess looking back the grass is always greener. It's a good idea to learn everything relative to the c major scale similar to how a keyboardist would. it gives you a roadmap to music in a sense. c major being the arterial roads and the backroads being 10-TET gamelan or some shit.

if these players aren't terrible players (your words) why are they terrible in your opinion.
i think it mostly comes down to these players looksmaxing and taking advantage of the video medium so people that seek out music on the video-based platforms rather than soundcloud or spotify see these artists and follow then cause they DO like the music
it's okay to be jealous of pretty people, but you should at least be honest when critiquing them.

I'm not jealous of Tim no matter how many surgeries he gets to transcend gender into anime hyperreality. I've been on this site a long time and long eloquent posts go mostly unnoticed. If you'd like me to express the why of why this shit sucks, I'll oblige
>Tim
Technically extremely proficient (obviously). Emotional depth of a....nothing? What emotions are conveyed by Polyphia's music? I struggle to name one. Production is way overdone, modern as all get out, compressed to shit. Boring performer/showman because he is focused on perfection. His sense of aesthetics match perfectly with his music, too. Gaudy, overwrought. Completely fails at the most basic task that music is supposed to fulfill.
>Ichika
Much the same problem. His music is even less compelling because really he's just making clips for social media. Struggles to perform this shit live so kind of frauding in a way. I respect that he is talented but his anime asian super extreme style of playing just does nothing for me. You're telling me you can't even play this shit? Technicality for technicality's sake.
>Cory Wong
I'm gonna say more racial things but damn his funk is so white, so anodyne. So soulless, so trite. Falls into that faggy (uh oh I said gay again!!) ironic hipster bullshit with their stupid fucking dry 70s drums and maj7th chords and muh silly costumes. Just musically bankrupt. A guy who has literally nothing to say about anything. Funk for people who would find RHCP too much.
>Mateus
Beautiful player. Fantastic player. Plays all the right notes. If someone played it I wouldn't be mad. But he's just not an artist. He should be in a band with a creative songwriter or something. He is unfortunately forced to be in the whole social media circus when he deserves much more. Also, his note choice isn't really moving/compelling. Most emotional content out of all of them by far, though.

An extraordinary talent. It is unfortunately used to be a showy, overplayed mess. Him and Tim have a lot in common in that regard. I do think his drumming on the body is pretty sick sometimes, which is profound considering most people who do that just look like douchebags. His music needs different mixing. All that moving around on the neck doesn't need to be given to you in 8K HD. Every slip and slide right up there in db with the notes themselves. Fatiguing, to say the least. Also, not an artist.

so whats the deal then? people listen to their music. lots of people. it's not happening the same way that lots of people listened to music in the 70's but at the same time, we're not in the 70's anymore.
are all the listeners just wrong? they've been tricked into thinking they like these artists? usually people return to music or seek out live shows of bands to see music live that they connect with on some level. you may not connect with it but that doesn't mean other people don't.
you're talking about the emotional depth of music as if it's one singular thing that you think all artists are aiming for and that they must go about it the same way artists of the past did.
maybe the listeners are looking for something new, or at least some new way of expressing the musical ideas they're familiar with. Even polyphia and marcin are using typical chord progressions, they're just decorating them differently than artists that came before them.
the mystery that bands like led zeppelin had back in the day, where info about the players was limited by the media of the day has been replaced by an always online culture, where playthroughs and interviews with the musos are the norm, these players didn't create this world, they're just taking advantage of the realities and the tools available today

This one guy, uuuh Jim Henson i think he was called.
he played a million notes, maybe more. SO FAST
it was wild. i never seen so many notes come outta one guitar
but the audience, they all just...stood there. no emotion, no head bobbing, just...eerily still
i had to get outta there, couldn't stand how awkward it was
and don't get me started on the smell. god you wouldn't BELIEVE what it was like in there, i don't think a hundred cans of deodorant would have helped!

>Are the listeners just wrong
Yes and no. The listeners are fooled. Polyphia is not "bad music". It's just not compelling. People have forgotten about aspects of music that make it moving. Part of the mystique of the Zeppelin's and other such bands is that they did weird shit musically and were in tune with the aesthetics of their presentation as well. Hendrix took musical risks. Tim and Co. don't. Playing guitar fast over trap-esque rhythms is an innovation, but a braindead one. It's a trend. It's like Peep's emo+trap thing. Trap is an instant winner. It's why country is using it now. No risk. No real danger. Couple that with lack of dynamics. Lack of edge. It just isn't good art.
>you may not connect with but
Yes, I understand. But people connect with all sorts of stupid shit. I'm not saying all fans should just quit right now. I'm saying they have bad taste.
>Emotional depth
If you don't see this as number 1 most important thing in music I don't know what to say man.
>Singular thing
If they're not aiming for emotion what are we doing here? Cue Beethoven quote.
>Something new
I can respect this. Marcin is really just an extension of Flamenco, Cory is not innovative at all, Ichika is but fails to perform it, Mateus is I'd say decently innovative in his space, and Tim is somewhat.
>Taking advantage
I suppose. It seems to me more so that it became about this social media thing rather than the music itself. So, you're right. It's not their fault. However, why are other bands able to put themselves on the map musically without all of these theatrics?

I've never tried, but on a quick glance: at least they have a homebase in the US and actual servicing just in case. And a return policy. The owner appears to be Korean. Don't know where they're making them, but he could just be going through Cort like everyone else for cheap guitars. Except they bring them back here for setup. Not some direct to buyer temu shit. Sounds like it's worth taking a chance and easy enough to return if you're disappointed.

i have a strat and a tube amp but still just use my interface because its a lot easier and more versatile. amp you gotta warm it up, cup the balls, make it some tea, get 40 pedals in just the right order, EQ it and to do all this I have to move my fat ass to the other side of the room. No thanks, I'll just click one button instead.

how many blues licks did they do for the cops to be after them like that?
if you had a guitar that you liked but it needed some work done that you couldnโt do yourself, would you pay to have to work done or just sell/trade it for something youโd like better? I have a strat that needs a new nut and some fretwork and even though itโs a nice guitar I have another strat that doesnโt need any work and Iโm thinking about just moving this thing along towards another guitar instead of spending the money fixing it up.

it isnโt anything special, just an early 2000s japanese strat. I have an old american standard thatโs been my main strat for years, this japanese one i got in a trade recently. Itโs a nice guitar but Iโm not sure if I want to spend the money on the work when Iโve already got a strat that I like better and doesnโt need any work.

Based on what I just saw, he's like a less talented Guthrie. That's still saying a lot, obviously. But, Guthrie has the ability to put some stank on it, which I don't think any of those other guys I mentioned can do. And I don't even listen to Guthrie's music, either lol
