would you say this is an accurate representation of the different fender pickups? I still havenโ€™t decided which model to get as my first electric guitar. Judging from this, I dislike the cliche classic rock sound of the Strat and the JM sounds like a Jag on steroids. The player 2 Jaguar has a vibrato, but some of you told me it would be a bad decision for a beginner. I also fear the Jag pickups sound too โ€˜indie/alternativeโ€™, unlike the more neutral Tele and Mustang pickups. I think I still prefer the Mustang, which is also cheaper than the rest. Now I watched another video, where they compared p90 pickups to fender single coils and humbuckers, and I thought those p90s sounded optimal. So would it be a better decision to look for a used Player Mustang 90 for about 500-600โ‚ฌ instead of getting a fresh player 2?

If you like the look of a Mustang and the sound of P90s I think the Mustang 90 would be a great choice. P90s are great and are very versatile, but they tend to be pretty noisy. Thereโ€™s an anon here who just bought a Mustang 90, wait to see when he comes around and what he says about it. I think itโ€™d be a great first electric, simple hard tail and light and compact with versatile pickups. Thatโ€™s right in the same camp as a Tele. Just keep in mind that the Mustang is a shorter scale guitar, meaning the distance from the bridge to the nut is shorter which in turn means the frets are closer together and the strings have less tension. None of that is a bad thing, just different than the standard Fender size.

So I vaguely know the difference between overdrive and distortion on an engineering level.
But practically when do I use one vs the other?
Is overdrive always just a boost in front of the distortion of my amp, while distortion pedals are always meant to be used with the clean channel of my amp?
Anonymous No.127538283 >>127538864
>>127538268
That's how I always understood it.
Pretty sure clean boosts don't work or at least work well with solid state either. They just boost volume, but on a tube amp, it's another way to achieve overdrive crunch. While overdrive technically works with both type amps, but for solid state, the overdrive functions like another distortion.

Princeton has been great. Finally got it dialed in and put some Tung Sol preamps tubes in it and it sounds great especially with disto and fuzz. Still find myself playing the JC quite a bit though and bi amp sometimes for best of both. Pretty happy with the set up.

Somewhere down the line i do want something like a 5150 or vtm 60.

Yeah overdrive is meant to push your preamp and has minimal clipping within its own circuit, distortion on the other hand has a lot of hard clipping going on and is meant to be used as a "second channel" basically. Overdrives shine in front of a toob amp or in front of other dirt pedals, specifically certain fuzzes. I particularly like using one in front of a Pharoah and I've gotten good results using one after a silicon fuzz face as well. They can also be used as a midrange boost depending on the specific OD. I only use OD's and fuzz pedals on my board but I like stacking gain stages before the amp itself, if you're a solid state guy or have a particularly sparkly clean amp and need compressed hard clipping for heavier sections, a distortion pedal will be what you're looking for.

Don't pay the block letter tax if you go that route. They used to be $500 all day long on the used market but are identical circuit wise to the signatures, though I'm not up to date on the newer models and I'd guess that they've probably switched some things up. Peavey used to be known for how cheaply made their pcb's were, so if you find one with "intermittent issues", pass on it. It's probably not going to go away with a tube swap or cap job. Traces with hairline breaks will drive a tech insane. They have a lot of top end sizzle as well that can be hard to tame when pushing a decent amount of gain but when they're dialed in, they're awesome. I've owned 2 of the originals ovet the years and regret selling them. Though they're really not well suited for what I do now.

ya. Expect less dirt from the overdrive. They'd call it a clean boost if it wasn't supposed to distort. Experimenting with your pedals is what normally unlocks interesting sounds. I get new lead tones boosting with an eq pedal or an amp sim pedal.

why is it that certain high gain sounds make it feel like I play in molasses?
Hard to describe but like I have to be ultra precise or else I'll get a dead note and it will sound choppy. Much harder than just playing on a clean channel or amp.
Meanwhile other hi gain sounds have the opposite effect and ridiculously easy to play kind of in a slippery way.
Do you know what I mean? I wonder which aspect of the sound shaping causes this?

I only have a sample size of the 1 that I played briefly in store, but it felt like it was from a lower tier product line (that obviously doesn't exist). Fretboard was gritty and dry, action was a mile high, fret buzz up and down the neck, frets needed to be polished, in hand it just felt like a cheap guitar. I went back and forth between it and a 70's reissue and it felt like they came from 2 different companies. It wasn't like playing a LP standard and studio back to back, it felt like one of the First Act guitars you used to see in wally world being compared to a Gibson. Yes a lot of those issues could be solved with a proper setup but it was the same price as a 70's model at $2499. Maybe it was a friday guitar (should have checked the serial now that I think about it) but even a proper setup wouldn't make it "feel" right if that makes any sense at all. It just felt like a Gibson money grab due to vintage 80's explorers being so popular on the secondhand market right now.

This. I personally enjoy the Mustang vibrato but itโ€™s a real pain to set up and learn it. I wouldnโ€™t recommend it unless youโ€™ve already got experience in setting up guitars, and this being your first I wouldnโ€™t. If you want a vibrato get a Strat, the offset vibrato is cool but again setup for a first electric guitar will be more of a pain. Strat vibratos are easy. If you want hardtail the Mustang is fine, or a Tele is great, or even a Strat if youโ€™re willing to block the vibrato and adjust saddle height accordingly. For a first Iโ€™d honestly suggest either the hardtail Mustang or a Tele because theyโ€™re both idiot proof. Iโ€™d lean more toward Tele.

I'm thinking about picking up guitar. I am a former professional musician having played trombone at a college level. life changed and while I would still like to play trombone I am unable to play a loud ass fucking instrument in my bedroom. I have a computer field job now that has me relocating every few years.
Guitar would offer me the chance to come back to music as a hobby, as well as give me opportunities to play in local groups.
I've poorly played string instruments in the past but only ever to learn shitty pop songs. This time I'd be playing purely to learn an instrument, starting similarly to how I did on trombone learning to read, play scales, play etudes just really practice a lot of the fundamentals and still goof off trying to play songs currently on my apple music then pursue serious understanding for classical, jazz and melodic rock settings.
After I move do I plan to continue to play guitar? probably. This instrument is so versatile it's compatible with every genre.
What do you guys think? do I have the right reasoning to want to get into this?

Lots of local music stores too. I can't imagine it's very lucrative anymore with all the turnover. Some smaller shops get kids for lessons and such but their guitar selection is garbage and small. So if you have a local Long and McQuade, then go for it. But you'll pay higher prices for everything. Kind of a sign of the times.

If you want to play an instrument, that's all the reasoning you want.
I started playing to make my own music, considered starting on keyboard because I do like piano and I hear it's the best instrument to write music on but guitar is just way cooler so I started there.
I've only been playing since around February of this year but I still get excited with guitar but I'm afraid I'll never get to where I need to/want to in the next couple years.

imo its mostly his rhythm guitar, and how it melts into leads. most hadnt figured out how to do it like that back then. or at least not that good. the other big thing was he was also just a great live musician, and put on good shows consistently. a great performer and entertainer.
and while it might seem stupid to say jimi, whos famous for lead guitar, is only relevant due to his rhythm playing, its dumb enough that i believe it. without his rhythm playing, ritchie blackmore could shred WAY harder, and was contemporaneous with him.
but jimi had excellent rhythm playing that went right INTO the crazy leads. its a very broad sound from just one guy

martins new 2025 standard models have the same bracing now and it's sad how much the d18 and d28 sound alike now. i thought the back and sides at least mattered a little bit on an acoustic but it's really like 2%

damn, yeah. i always liked bluegrass cause im a hick but i didn't realize how talented a lot of them really are until a lot later. i'm in a bluegrass course right now and it's really fun but seeing these people change chords while incorporating walk ups, alternating bass, and cross picking at like 160bpm+ is nuts.

There's a recording of his post Ubu band Friction playing a gig. He's pretty well documented for a guy who died at 24. Yeah, very inspired guitar player.

Best thing about them is getting a Gibson sound at a reasonable price (still).. and it's not like the Standard is a "student" model.
Just saying. I don't have an SG. They just seem like the most comparable guitar to a Strat or Tele.

Cool if he did.
His main style with electrics just seemed more sketchy and raw. Some of the riffs in Diamond Dogs were cool, but not as refined as Rebel. He kind of inadvertently created postpunk riffage in 73.
