What's the actual future of music? Mainstream music but even the indie scene is fucked right now.
Poptimism like Roan and all the others, the slop of country everyone is doing, rap dying, rock still fucking dead, what evolves from here? Is this the period before Nirvana and glam rock was still at full power or is it worse?

People will just listen to old music and artists like Taylor Swift and Drake will just keep releasing mediocre slop till they are old and people will listen to it because there is no better alternative.

in the 2010s music got wittled down to pop and pop rap.

Thanks to the poptimist mind virus the present and future of music is never ending white girl pop slut factory and mumble rappers.

They will have taken over completely but still act like they are the underdog

As much as some of that hair shit sucked at least they could play their instruments. There is no forward for music as long as everyone is making songs for Tik Tok

Music used to a mostly collective thing until the 2010s. Everyone has turbo-niche tastes now, which means once all the big name musicians die out, there won’t anything (living) that people can rally around

>What's the actual future of music?
exploring, listening to and enjoying music on your own, without worrying about "who else" likes or doesn't like stuff. The future of music is the death of the insecure audience.

if you're still sniveling about the popularity of pop, rap or whatever artist has hurt your fee-fees, and still paying attention to "critics" and RYM aggregate scores, then you've been left behind from music and don't even know it. And it's nobody's fault but your own.

Michael Jackson is number 41 worldwide on Spotify's monthly listeners with over 53 million. Current artists are quite lame when legacy acts like MJ are still that successful.

Nah. If there had been streaming in the 80's, old acts from the 70's and 60's would still chart. Artists didn't change, technology did.

At least a decade of generic AI slop background music to vibe/study/drive/do laundry to before we abandon technology and start banging on shit and making noise again.

What I really don't understand is the levels of social and political unrest we're dealing with and punk is still dead as shit or at least on life support. Even pop punk barely made a resurgence.

They say numetal is back, but other than some Zoomies fangirling over Deftones, I don't see it.

I think we're about to make a shift.
Mainstream is pretending to be interesting (I like it more then most of the 2010's but thats not a high bar), and indie is just copying shit from 20-30 years ago.
What we need is the indie scene to get out of the box a little and for record labels to do the same and be willing to take in more then just the progeny of people who've already found success

Are you retarded ?

Just because the mainstream scene is full with the same shit doesn't mean that music is dead lmao, like you can go back to every decade and see how music shifted all the time, we had classical music then we moved onto blues and jazz, then ballads, then rock, then metal, pop music isn't a genre, you just need to search for music, I could agree if you said music is relying too much on engineering and electronic sounds, but O still think there's a shit ton of music besides what you see on billboard, I listen to rap mostly so I know there's a ton of rap albums about and not just Drake or shit like that.

The future of music lies within the context of the future. Meaning: there will be a new, previously uncharted spatial context for people to listen to and digest music. Much like streaming changing people's approach to music. Might have something to do with VR.

I reckon there's a finite number of styles you can make with various instruments, voices, and arrangements, and computers have pretty much done them all by now. So probably an endless cycle of reviving old styles for new generations.

AI generated music and live avatars is also a bit of a wildcard regarding future profitability of the industry in general.

Except instead of going the obvious rap direction with this you soften up a smidge and make it a little less repetitive and add Tate McCrae vocals.

Well regarding "indie" music I have few recommendations and it's not gonna be rock or midwestern shit, I listen to indie electronic and synth music and I don't believe the bullshit of I only listen to musicians from my shitty town with less of 54 listeners, while I understand Indie means no record deal with a big music label or production by themselves, I'll deem indie as non mainstream music.

Hyperpop/electronic:
-Benzii - spirallore +++
-Djmegan23 - dopamine machine 2
-echo angel - echo angel / moonlight
-Blawhitt - any single does it for me

Easy to call tiktok core but honestly this albums are good, so fuck it

Garage rock:
Constant mongrel - living in excellence
Stock manager - VHS rock tape 1 ( I only recommend grow the few and under ashes but feel free to listen to the album)

Pretty basic, but I will agree with everyone saying rock is deadhis just fill the blvoid for it when I'm tired of grunge classics l

Black metal:

Medvsa - Medvsa

Punk:

Cancer slug

Mainstream metal/punk is dead, only good metal/punk bands are hidden in a shit concert you pay 10 bucks to get in,
I honestly have a lot of other bands, like for post hardcore and shit like that, but I just want to get my point across.

nice strawman. That's not what I meant and you know it. In fact, it's the literal opposite of the obvious intent of what i was talking about.

listening and enjoying music without giving a fuck what others think is not the same as "never talking about music" with other people.

The difference is that if you're talking with music with someone, and they lack the maturity to be like "I just didn't get it / like it" and instead go "HAHAH THAT MUSIC SUCKS AND YOU HAVE SHIT TAStE" then that person is to be avoided at all costs. The insecurity that drives the worldview of haters is what's sorting the haters of music.

It used to be that haters could say shit like that because they're insecure narcissists and could turn the conversation towards them (the haters) and their hate instead of keeping the conversation about the music. But any more when people start up with that shit IRL, they get ignored.

Concomitantly, the insecurity that caused a great deal of people to self-filter is going away in deference to "who am I trying to impress"? So the conversations about music become more genuine, because the kind of twatwaffle that goes "oh you just say you like that to look deep" again, gets ignored.

/mu/ is becoming somewhat of an anachronism in that regard. Insecurity abounds, and people still act like haters' and critics' opinions matter.
