I think WMEB has a bigger problem of "dragging the song out way too long" than Exiled, which is a trend with his DSBM projects
Fortunately When Mine Eyes Blacken is good enough to not matter.
I liked the style he did for Nystagmus, but eventually they got rid of him and when more death-y which was weird. Oneiric Entity into The Other Path was such a fucking downgrade.

i reckon thats kind of the main thing with atmospheric black metal in general no? repetitive riffs to create atmosphere that you can lose yourself in?
i really like this song by lyrinx called isolation from "ending the circle of life" ep and its also kinda repetitive, but its a longer atmospheric song, with a switch up that happens at around the 10 minute mark

I mean you're preaching to the choir, I'm Lyrinx's biggest dicksucker.
Yeah it's part of it, but there's a fine line between "atmospheric" and "repetitive". I find Mort falls into the latter every now and then. Bands like Lyrinx always seem to know just when it's dragging and switch it up to keep it fresh or delay it until the next major change.
I'm thinking with like track 3 on the WMEB (which I dont know the name for as I think MA and bandcamp disagree from memory), has no right being 20 mins, or EFL having Clarity Viewed Through Dying Eyes. He nails it on the title track IMO, but its all subjective init.
Just something about it usually has me at the 8 minute mark going "okay so we're just gonna repeat ideas for a bit huh?" and it's a nitpick I have of it. Doesn't stop me loving it, with EFL in particular being a favourite of mine.

i used put there is no beauty left here on in the background as i was sleeping, because its a relaxing and cathartic record, so i wasnt really bothered by it being repetitive as much.
but if its more active listening id definitely prefer something slightly shorter and less repetitive, i used to wake up and listen to gris il etait une foret because its much louder so it wakes me up very well

Basically got similar tastes to you then mate. I like Gris when walking and stuff. EFL and music in general I don't listen to while sleeping but more "background" and EFL does work well for that, but stuff like the title track shows it doesnt HAVE to be, as he produces a long song that holds the attention throughout.

I liked atmospheric BM or just kinda melancholic metal in general, even during the cringe coreshit phase most go through I liked the "sad" songs more, and then I got more into the extreme metal that can still be melancholic like melodeath or something.
I was digging through my scrobbles as I genuinely don't really remember what got me into DSBM or the first bit I listened to, and I think the earliest record I found of DSBM that I listened to was this. Still a favourite, really.
So i'd say for me it was just liking generally sad/melancholic stuff, getting massively into Insomnium - Above The Weeping World for its general vibe, then eventually BM and in particular atmoshit, then bringing those 2 together.

I've always liked her music, since waaaaaay back before I ever posted here. Shes one of the few merimutts bicycle collectors who actually embraced electronic music in her rap, similar to grime in the UK. Unlike a lot of talentless rappers she can sing real nice, and her actual rap skills are solid, like really solid. Plus her personality cracks me the fuck up, literally threw away her mainstream career just to say whatever the fuck she wants in interviews and xitter.
Her beat selection is really unique, I've kept this track around for ages

The entire of the internet is in a death spiral, I'm already moving to IRL more and more. Youtube is turning into AI slop, people just gather the opinions of others instead of living their own lives and putting new information, most comments are beginning to be chatbots talking to each other to guide you to certain products or thoughts.
You have about 5 years left of speaking with people like Ratthew before its just him and 9 chatbots spamming to each other over and over again. I'm planning on downloading a bunch of books before AI starts correcting the record on everything and you need seven pieces of ID and five logins just to view a video online.
The walls are closing in on the world, even IRL, people will allow CCT ai face recognition software to watch your every move, drones will run around to catch you the second you speed over the limit, this is the most unfortunate timeline.

That's true, but it's also more work for a label to promote multiple records by the same artist at once. It's hard enough to get traction (as reviews/discussion) online for one album, so it makes sense they'd be wary of doing the promo cycle several times in a single year.
Then again, it's better to have an album out each year than to put out one huge album per decade (looking at you Mito), purely from a promotional standpoint.

Once per year is probably the maximum people will accept, personally I wouldn't mind more spam from my favorite artists, never once thought to myself "god I wish Adam would stop making more Jute Gyte albums.". Classical composers would put out hundreds of pieces, don't see the issue with more stuff.
Speaking of JG, Looks like this might actually be an album-less year from him. Very suprising since Unus mundus patet was made up of a lot of old material I believe, and Synthemata was just a dungeon synth release.

10 years in the oven for that production and those vocals... Two relatively small changes could have made them legendary in my eyes, oh well.

JG seems like the rare case where he can put out as much music as he likes and both fans and journos will engage with it. Safe to say he's got a niche with no real competition.
I think it would be cool if bands put out more short-form releases between LPs, it's a good way to try a bunch of novel ideas and see what works. Then you can refine it for the next album.
>10 years in the oven for that production and those vocals...
Yeah, I don't quite know how to describe that production. It's like everything is the same volume at all times, except for the vocals ofc. And there seems to be a stereo field widening effect on the whole mix, which is making the guitars and drums overlap even more. It's as though they never checked the mix in mono to see how these different elements were clashing/masking.

I mean basically all his IDM and ambient stuff is straight up ignored, and his metal releases basically never go more than once per year. The French furry guy Esoctrilihum is someone who actually go pretty hard with new releases. Might as well listen to his 2025 album while I'm talking about him, not really into his style personally, not bad though.
>It's like everything is the same volume at all times,
Its typical modern "Cavernous" third wave bullshit, make everything loud and the same volume with zero dynamics, becomes sleep inducing white noise a few minutes in despite their best effort to be as hard as possible. Same story as bands like Kvadrat and Sacrificial Vein last year that we spoke about, Abyssal suffers the same issue, trying too hard to have production create their sound, instead of letting the music do that. If Portal can manage with clean production and E tuning on Ion, so can these bands.
So much of metal just sounds awful purely off production alone, listening to electronic the past bit has only made it even harder to ignore since thats the one aspect they focus on the most.

Right but in this case they (Mitochondrion) aren't using much reverb like Abyssal would, there's some trickery with phase or mid-side panning going on to make the music sound 'spatially' huge but without the sound of a 'space' around it. Reverb is a good tool, but it was the trend in a lot of genres in the 2010s to make everything awash with it. You don't want the whole band to sound distant!

I suppose you are right in that Mitochondrion does maintain a load more clarity than the others because they aren't riding on the reverb train into next week. They aren't the exact same as the rest, yet the end result does feel similar in how tiring it becomes to listen to. Really Its not that bad when its instrumental, but with the extra vocal layers the whole mix is just way too dense that it begins to blend into one large boring wave of loud noise that never ends.
Collin was a lot more intelligent with this band by mixing the vocals way lower
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgIvpAi_J_c
Not saying I think he did a perfect job (I don't really like how the guitars sound, they lack depth), but its better than Vitriseptome.

Yep, basically why I haven't spent much time with the record. Just no separation at all. And I tried collapsing the mix to mono to test my theory: the guitars and drums basically disappear into one morass and all that's left is the vocals. The song you posted is almost ear candy in comparison.
>Guitars lack depth
That's a place reverb can help, but it should usually be an auxilliary effect mixed 'behind' the dry guitars, not clouding them completely. Or the old school way to add depth was using a room mic on the guitars, backed a few meters off the amp.

Honestly I think this would have solved a lot of metal music, its probably why demos sound so much better sometimes, just park a mic a bit further back and let the instruments speak for themselves. This is part of what makes the Thorn's bass sound like what it does, right? Or is that something else?

I could only guess how he got that bass tone, to me it sounds like a mic on the edge of the speaker which gets that super 'warm' rolled-off sound. Moving the mic away from the amp gives you more of a 'big picture' sound but also less low end due to the proximity effect.
Also maybe I'm crazy but it sounds like he double-tracked the bass. Listen at 0:34 and 0:39, I think I'm hearing two basses doing bends slightly off from one another.

1993 a year of misery? Darkness fills the sky. I hear the warriors cry. The legend tells a story From a Viking from the north, Who met a Death Warrior Black Metal was never really the same. The legend call it murder And the Viking had survived. But the eyes of the Death Warrior Never saw again the sun upon the sky. And the quintessence: Everyone recognized war, That Black Metal isn't just Entertainment anymore. I can still remember My emotions so confused. My soul was seeking answers. No knife I let unused. So many questions I had to satisfy. My soul was under torture, But I knew my way was right I see a cemetery fall asleep under fog And I know the old days will never come Again. 1993, this year of misery was the knife which split the Black Metal scene apart. Since that mighty day Black metal split his Way, And the unity was never the same again. Lies, rumors and hate. Moneymaking, sadness And shame And all this by, the Day as Burzum Killed Mayhem. Remember this day! Remember this way! That you never betray, what here leads you On your way! And I never will forget The day as this both warriors met. The blood was hot the moon was red And Black Metal created his own grave. And I dream from days before Black Metal Maniacs, no whore, In the legions of war The demons in our heads the law. So I summon you once again, We never should forget the pain From older days in our veins We now cut of that it can flow like rain. Arrghh, this was the legend from The Day as Burzum killed Mayhem.
