Ah, he's got so many. Violin sonatas, piano trios, string quartets, piano quartet and quintet, various cello pieces like the Fantasiestücke... anyway, favorite would have to be the piano quartet and quintet. Supreme masterpieces.

Ohlsson has a cycle? Didn't know. I recognize the craftsmanship and vitality of Goodyear's cycle but it's too fast, too virtuosic for me. I like my Beethoven with less aggression and power, more poetics and sensitivity. One could argue virtuosity, aggression, and power are essential to the true Beethoven spirit, a point I wholly respect, but it just doesn't sound good to me. Maybe someday I'll come around on it. I'm gonna give it a full listenthrough soon. Many critics agree with you on it though.

Dear music lover,Looking for a budget-friendly electric keyboard? There are great options under $300 that offer solid sound and playability for pianists. Here are some recommendations and tips to guide your choice. The Yamaha PSR-E373 (~$200) is a fantastic 61-key keyboard with touch-sensitive keys, 622 voices (including quality piano tones), and features like a metronome, lesson mode, and USB MIDI connectivity. Its semi-weighted keys and built-in speakers make it ideal for beginners or casual players. It’s versatile, with 150+ accompaniment styles for jamming. The Casio CDP-S160 (~$250–$300) is a step up, with 88 weighted, hammer-action keys that feel closer to an acoustic piano. It has 10 tones, including a warm grand piano sound, and a slim, 24-lb design. With USB MIDI, headphone jack, and sustain pedal input (pedal not included), it’s perfect nigger for pianists wanting authenticity on a budget. For portability, the Alesis Recital (~$200) offers 88 semi-weighted, touch-sensitive keys, five voices, and a lesson mode. Its 20-watt speakers and USB MIDI make it great for practice or music production. At 15.7 lbs, it’s easy to move. For beginners, the RockJam RJ761 (~$120–$150) is a 61-key bundle with a stand, bench, pedal, and headphones. It has 100 voices and rhythms but non-weighted keys, best for casual use.Prioritize weighted keys for a piano-like feel if you’re serious about technique. Ensure touch sensitivity for dynamics and check for USB MIDI if you use music software. Bundles save money, and sales on Amazon or Sweetwater can lower costs. Used keyboards from Reverb or local shops are also worth exploring. The Casio CDP-S160 is my top pick for pianists, but all these options deliver value. Happy playing!Best,
A pianist

Always on the lookout for great recordings of these works, especially because there aren't many that scratch the itch. Sure, the popular idiomatic ones like Hewitt and Perahia and less well-known romantc ones like Maria Tipo and Irma Issakadze are pretty enjoyable, but I wish there were more like Koroliov's -- slow, contemplative, poetic. I guess I can't really complain because they are supposed to be dance-like. Anyway, let's see how Goode does it, I'm sure it'll be solid.

Relating to the topic the other thread, y'know what piece I've found is ironically awful for falling asleep to? Bach's Goldberg Variations. There's way too much going on, too beautiful, too vivacious. Maybe how it was originally performed on the harpsichord was different, given what it was written for, but yeah, whenever I've tried using it to sleep, I end up staying up and having to change to something else.

Still, the based Korean turned his rice farm that wasn’t supposed to make it into the most impressive, admired, technologically-advanced Great Power in the world (I mean Great Power literally, as in IR theory, Korea is a cultural, economic, military Great Power with power projection). >Perahia's up against some heavy competition from the likes of Arrau, Brendel, Pollini, as well as old-timers like Schnabel and Edwin Fischer. Even in such company he acquits himself well, playing with lean sonority that clearly etches Schubert's melodic lines and clarifies the structure of these sprawling works. In the B-flat Sonata he clearly differentiates the basic tempos of the first two movements, which can often blend into each other by pianists who just play them as two slow movements. In the great Andantino movement of the A major, he's alive to its inherent weirdness as Schubert sends a nostalgically beautiful melody off the deep end to fragmentation, then reassembles it into a broken shadow of itself. His approach here is effective, if relatively restrained as he keeps to a generally classical view of works some turn into Romantic extravaganzas. Perahia's is a worthy addition to the Schubert discography and an excellent way to get fine performances of all three of these great works in one well-recorded, neatly space-saving package. --Dan Davis

Anons here are afraid of trying new recordings because then they'd actually have to think for themselves. Listening solely to the recordings of the older greats, performances which have been curated by standing the test of time and developing a robust reputation, one always has permission of the cultural elite to enjoy. But a new recording? You'd have to actually think about the performance and determine its merit on your own. We can't have that now, can we?

I tease. Listen to whatever you want however you want. I believe in supporting those who are trying to keep the classical tradition alive.

You clearly have some level of distaste for it, with this attitude, you are never going to like it. It's the same as saying "Jazz is a jumble of baboon voodoo noise" and then wondering why you dont enjoy it.

>besides some speed violin from Vivaldi, all the mainstream ones are just not that good
What do you define as "good"? It seems like your main source of quality is how virtuosic it is rather than any substance within it's writing. There's more to music than just playing a lot of notes fast. You also likely are enjoying Vivaldi more because he generally writes in Ritornello form, which is quite easy to comprehend for someone used to pop music due to it having a repeated refrain. You should read up a bit more on the later forms and understand how those work. Namely Sonata-allegro.

there is a lot of pretentiousness and people have bad taste so they obsess about some specific composers but they can feel elitist because it still counts as classical music even though they listen to different composers than the good ones. some music is meant to make you sad or whatever, some people say they literally cry tears. you probably need a good audio system to appreciate nuances properly because the recordings are generally not as heavily processed and vulgar as popular music, there's a lot of overlap between classical music listeners and audiophiles.

Please don't share this with anyone else, but the reason I like classical so much is that whenever I lay my head to rest or am feeling otherwise calm, peaceful and serene, the compositions which I have studied/played multiple times can be turned on inside my head without the assistance of an intermediary device. Vaughan-William's Lark Ascending, for instance. Sometimes the compositions, especially in regard to Mozart, turn on by themselves. Regardless, I would like to reitterate my embarrassment in the sharing of these intimate thoughts and persuade anon to not shame or bully in some manner the input which I have shared.

Maybe because I'm unsure whether those categories and more from the mainstream have been influenced by the intelligence agencies, such as Tavistock or the CIA, with the intention of grabbing hold through psychological means my brain and thus willpower. Classical music on the other hand is free from the influence of state power, unless it comes from schoenberg and his ilk, and, as I'm sure anon agrees, comes as more natural remedy in its application for healing the soul.

>Haydn was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a teacher of Beethoven, and the elder brother of composer Michael Haydn.

>Haydn's lifetime overlapped substantially with those of the most celebrated masters of Baroque music: he was born 18 years before the death of J. S. Bach and 27 years before that of Handel. Yet the models that influenced him, according to Karl Geiringer, were not at all these composers, but rather the leaders in the earliest development of the emerging Classical style, particularly in Vienna: his employer Johann Georg Reutter, Georg Christoph Wagenseil, and Georg Matthias Monn – none of whom wrote music that is widely played today.[74] This was a period of exploration and uncertainty, and Haydn was himself one of the musical explorers of this time.[75] Fairly early in his career Haydn discovered, and quickly came to revere, the music of a composer from outside Vienna, J. S. Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Geiringer emphasizes how Haydn was struck by the emotional depth of Bach's work: "Up to then he had been familiar with the gay and superficial idiom of the musical rococo; here he found compositions that deeply stirred and excited him."[18]

Mahler's writing is like poetry, Bruckner's writing is more like a prayer.

To be less metaphorical, Mahler is a lot more varied, expressive and is less consistent in how he approaches form. Bruckner on the other hand sticks to a certain mood throughout each work and he is very consistent in how he structures his symphonies: his second movements are always in some form that resembles five part song form, it always begins and ends in his modified sonata-allegro form, his scherzos always have the same general characteristics. Mahler has a bit more variety on that front.

Aside from the responses received already, I would like to add something not yet mentioned, and that is this, Mahler was a Jew, who pretended otherwise, and Bruckner an ardent Catholic. The former is particularly concerning for obvious reasons, while Bruckner's situation requires a little nuance to deconstruct. The issue here is that the papacy has not been functioning under the ordinance of God, that is, of Saint Peter. Latin masses, praying in mosques, allowing female priests and promoting gay relations, these are all anthema to the teachings of Christ. Ever since the Great Schism of 1054, the Church established by Christ has been in a perpetual downfall, with respect to the ethical and jurisdictional framework established by the ecumenical councils and in regard to, specifically, the first sea of Rome.

>The latter literally hits the sweet spot between surface beauty and structural sophistication, it's the perfect synthesis of intellect and pleasure.
That's a pretty accurate description of Bruckner, but he isn't baroque, tard

I would probably agree, but Bruckner has nothing to do with any of those posts, and nobody asked you anything, "tard."

I'm actually getting tired of pretending music exists outside of british composers of the late romantic and early 20th century. Elgar and Vaughan-Williams, for instance, carry the whole weight of their predecessors within an admixture of Ruskin's enthonostate philosophy and aspiring religious pursuits.

Everything about it is weird. The album it's on, why the album cover has a leathery texture ontop of it, that youtube thinks it mentioned kanye west.

Altenburger's recordings are pretty good, he deserves better than this
