I have unironically tried to get into hip hop several times over the years
there are a handful of individual tracks that are actually quite good, there's a hip hop all time hits compilation of 2cds that is excellent
most of it is just rubbish
the gangster stuff where they larp about being big time drug dealers is cringe
the fact it is so popular tells me all i need to know about normal people

If it has an original harmonic arrangement (can use normal chord progressions but cant just be samples) and sung vocals (not chanting flat notes) then sure, but at that point you are getting into more RB territory.

The act of "raping" isn't musical. It just isn't. Its rhythmic "poetry" but even calling it poetry is a stretch, but I'll let you have that.

Let's take the first song off of Kendrick Lamar's semenal work, To Pimp a Monkey.

Is Thundercat's groovy bass line music? Hell fucking yeah.

Are Kendrick's 60 iq monkey chants music? No. He is soiling the song with his retardation. The instrumental is music, the rap is not.
