Clean production isn't necessarily a problem to me, it depends what the band can do with it. Most bands simply don't have the technical skill to play clean and actually produce interesting music. Immortal, Emperor, Marduk, Naglfar, Troll and Behemoth are a few examples that have done it.

Endless tremolo riffing at maximum distortion and input volume requires different technique than playing galloping beats and quick chord transitions dialed back with a noise gate. A lot of black metal is pretty amateurish when it comes to technical playing ability, which is totally fine if the overall result is good, but when you try to clean it up the weaknesses really show. Also, cleaning up the noise usually means you need to add something more to amplify the energy of the rest of the music or it sounds weak and flat.

Unfortunately many bands that produced good "raw" music have tried to clean up and simply became worse.

Just lost after 11 days to A-ha's The Sun Always Shines on TV, I just had to listen to it. Had a cathartic dance session to it in my living room.

Going through the Drudkh discography (non chronologically). They are consistently excellent (the quantity of reviews of metallum are a testament to this.)

Songs of Grief and Solitude is all acoustic music. I didn't realize this until halfway through the album and no black metal had played yet.

The swan road is probably their weaker of the albums. I couldn't recall a single memorable riff that wasn't in all their other albums.

Blood in our wells and A Few Lines in Archaic Ukranian are probably my favorites but I have yet to go through them all

The Black Metal soundtrack/score is in part comprised of the music made by the subjects and frequently cuts to them rehearsing/performing. Black Metal veins is Black Metal through and through. Bands that interweave instruments from their culture into their sound are pretty cool and personally I think Saor does this splendidly. Still not a big fan of their music since it is way too clean and bright, but that's just a personal preference.
