its not about them also making sports bike, its about the time/effort/r&d/thought that actually goes into the bikes

for example, i'd say BMW despite spending so much effort on the S1000/M1000, are still making a "better" purpose-made bike with the GS
Or honda - they make alright sports bikes, but their bread and butter, where they really accel is with the goldbergstein
KTM, dukes+superdukes are good for what theyre making, but their dualsports are second to none and completely dominate the dakar

getting a kwakker for adv would be like getting a halrey panamerican, its just doesnt feel right

The X300 is pretty unique, I think it's the only sub-650 ADV that isn't a single and it's quite light even compared to a lot of singles. Saying Kawi specializes in sportbikes feels pretty wrong too considering dirtbikes and dual sports have been a huge part of their business for decades and the KLR is an icon.

I have a Kawi dualsport myself and I'm really interested in the KLE/Versys 450/500 that they teased last fall, seems like it could be a goldilocks bike for me.

I bought one of these without riding it first. 2020 model, single owner, pretty much spotless outside, great service history, but 50k miles on it already, so it has been ridden a lot. Should I be worried? I've seen older models go past 100k miles.

I pulled the trigger hastily because the price was great. I saw a video of a cold start and it was flawless.

you'll be fine.
Check brake pad wear and chain lenght/tension.
At the risk of speaking too much, modern engines in my experience either fail catastrophically or go on forever if electronics don't go first. I wonders if anyone else has had this experiences with newer motorcycle/car engines.

So it just sat in his shop for a few years.
Then dad died.
Now he wants to build it.

I went with him and rumaged through dad's shop.
Its more than "a frame".
Frame, tank and forks look brand new.
Weird clamp on handlebars on the forks.
Went though parts pile and found a brand new seat.
I found 2 swingarms in a parts pile behind the shop. I dont see any issues with either, not even rust. One has tell-tale yellow writing from a junkyard.
More than likely theres other miscellaneous parts.

So......
No wheels or engine or electrical (yet found).
Engine appears to be easy to source.
Electrical will suck to source all those individual components. This is one of those times where a crashed donor bike makes sense.

Now my question.
What about wheels?
I'll be honest, after 30+ years of riding, I've never changed wheels.
Are they relatively standard for axle shaft diameters, sprocket offset and so forth?
This seems like basic shit I should know but I guess I've jist never gone down that path.

The whole Versys lineup are very much "engineer's bikes". Under appreciated, ugly as fuck, but let's run down the list
>X-300
Babby ADV for the rider aging out of the huge monsters and doesn't mind being slow
>650
Supermoto ergonomics, huge seat, hard bags, sensible but boring engine, cheap. This is basically the closest we get to the Tracer 7 in BurgerLand.
>Versys 1000/1100
Slightly more boring, probably more comfy and reliable Multistrada V4 and S1000XR competitor. This is the direction Yamaha SHOULD have taken the FZ-1, or if they had the balls to ever make a Tracer 1000, yet they don't. Kawi does.

This, especially with sport bikes and naked, the cb300r was $90 and cbr500r was $90 a month meanwhile a vmax is $64 a month all full coverage cost without custom coverage. They hate sport bikes and naked.

I need a favor, /dbt/. I saw a weird bike at a red light last weekend while sketching at a coffee shop. I thought it was just a customized gs500 at the time, but I realized afterwards that the frame was off, it had clip on handle bars, and the tail was different than a gs500. I wish I'd snapped a photo, but I just had only tried to sketch the thing like a dumbass.

Does anyone know what make and model this was?

Does it have to be a major brand?
AJP only makes rally bikes and dirt bikes.
Reiju Mostly two stroke dirt bike and two ADVs small capacity.
Royal Enfield unless you count the continental as a sport bike.
Benelli but they in theory have access to the entire QJ library and could make a sport bike.

Yeah, I really like mine but I'd be all over a KLX450, especially if they did a rally version.
It's weird how there's this goldilocks zone for a light ADV/big dual sport but nobody really quite gets it right, KTM comes the closest but they're let down by quality and reliability issues. That's why I'm really excited to see the KLE450, it might finally be that ideal bike that straddles the dual sport/ADV line perfectly.

Lot of people here coping, but it's kind of true. However, I think it's more bikes attract some weirdos, but what hobby doesn't? I've been to meetups with some real odd individuals. It's gotten to the point I just don't like them because of some of the people that go to them.
I want to be clear I'm not talking about stereotypes. I expect to see and want to see the gsxrbros, dynabros, Harley boomers, etc. I'm talking about people that are genuinely disgusting and weird.
There was one guy who'd show up on his busted up rebel 250. He was a turbo manlet that looked like a kid until he took off his helmet and he looked 65, although he claimed to be only 30. He smelled horrible and would get uncomfortably close to people, especially the few thots there, and speak low with an MJ like high voice. Then there was another young guy who had a face like Rocky Dennis on a Ninja 400. One time he tried to pop a wheelie, failed, and dropped his bike. Haha, everyone laughs, good attempt, whatever. Then he tried and kept trying, everytime dropping his bike and a few people had to ask him to stop because they were worried he was going to get them kicked out of the Sonic the meetup was at. Those are just the most memorable ones, but there were plenty more weirdos that ruined the whole thing. And tons of guys that didn't know how to ride and genuinely made the place dangerous.
Now outside of some HD Dealership bike nights that are more family events than anything, I just don't go to anything like that.

Do cruiser riders do it for other people or something? Because I promise you, everyone else wishes you would stop.
>What you and all of the other(~5) dudes in your city that care about some eclectic gay as fuck motorcycle
Wow dude. You got me. Fully over.
We all look gay as fuck riding. The difference is, I know I look gay as fuck and I'm okay with that. You think you look cool, but you look just as gay.

I'll probably just wait until the bike appreciates enough that I can make a little profit. I can't just keep it as a showpiece forever. Would be a bit silly.

I mean these are also fairly bug eyed and edgy looking, but man, it still looks like it wants to be a bike.
Somebody pointed out in one of my pics once that my bike looked beautifully full of life in comparison to the many many drab and dull crossovers and trucks all around it. It feels like an amount of modern bike aesthetic design has gone that way too. Designed to blend in and look plain.
I love sportbikes for how loud their visual design is, bright vibrant colors, big beautiful plastics, artistic flair from the shape of the headlights to the point of the tail. Something that anyone can look at and atleast feel something.
Somehow even old UJMs and British standards could still achieve a level of beauty with such a utilitarian focus, but a lot of modern nakeds seem totally confused what they want to be and ultimately look like nothing. Maybe Iโ€™m just overlooking what the modern generation has to offer and idolizing classics, but itโ€™s hard too look at an MT07/09/10 and feel anything. It just looks like sci fi greeble applied as a full visual direction

I've said this a lot but I think LEDs really fucked up bike design across the board, seems like a lot of designers went crazy with power once they didn't have to design around big headlight reflectors and we've ended up with a lot of hideous stuff. Pretty much the only bikes that look good these days are the "retro" ones.

I think LEDs could have been a huge boost for design and I still like how the final gen R6โ€™s headlights came out with the tactical brights below the DRL eyes. But yeah it seems they only get utilized in mimicking the classics or making just making one or two tiny bulbs while lending now character to the bike itself. The 2021+ MT07 is particularly guilty of this, the R7 also does, to a degree

I'm the other KLX anon. I did sports/sporty cars for almost 20 years, after getting into bikes I've kinda lost interest though. Personally I'd get the R6 and a more practical daily, maybe a truck or a real SUV with a hitch that can handle a bike on a carrier or trailer instead. I'm pretty happy with my bike/truck combo and plan on adding a midsize ADV down the line, maybe a sportier one like a Transalp.

IIRC there's some stupid rule against variable headlights in the US preventing us from getting turn/lean aware "look around the corner" headlights, which would be a major boon for riding at night, and much easier to implement with banks of LEDs than mechanically moving bulbs/mirrors.

I know we have that rule with cars, I was working at a BMW shop when the F80/82 Ms came out and they had the hardware for adaptive headlights but it was disabled because of that regulation. We had the software to turn it back on and pretty much everybody who owned one went for it.

>>28454740
He's talking about the "adaptive" ones that use an LED matrix that's basically always on high beam but tracks oncoming traffic and dims only the LED segments in its direction. Cornering lights are legal but they have to either be a swiveling headlight or a fixed secondary thing that only lights up when you're turning into a corner.

Thinking about getting e-scooter but garage in my apartment complex does not have electric outlet. Honda does these removable battery packs which is ideal. There is a joint standard between a bunch of manufacturers, the battery swapping stations are only in China I think but the bikes themselves could be available in other countries. The only upgrade you would get with future packs would be increased energy density, and even that's not a guarantee if the chemistry changes. You won't get any increase in performance from the bike or faster charging rates. Most likely it will just stagnate for a decade or two until most of the batteries on the market are dead and they make a new standard.

The reason I'm asking is because I know they have these public swap stations in asia and this may be a reason they may stick with form factor and just upgrade the technology. I don't expect to have the scooter for that long probably, just something to think about. Maybe it will hold resale value better if the most fearful aspect of EVs is mitigated by easy swap.

>>28454865
At some point all those sold scooters will require a battery refresh. They may start offering it with different tech if it would make sense for their subscription business model. AFAIK the battery is owned by Honda, scooter is owned by you and you pay a subscription for certain amount of energy.

>>28454877
I think they have swap stations in India and other asian countries too. Energy density and/or weight are specifically reason why I asked because there are some technologies on the horizon. Of course the power train would remain the same. Would love to see wider industry standardisation, after all we agreed on AAs, USB, etc.

I wouldn't hold your breath because a different chemistry will generally mean a different charging profile, which means a lot of money upgrading those public swap stations and having to split the capacity. More likely they will hold off on adopting anything ground breaking until the next standard comes along.
>Would love to see wider industry standardisation, after all we agreed on AAs, USB, etc.
The trouble is with motorcycles you're looking at things like a voltage range from 72v to like 300v, all the different chemistries, bikes having built in chargers, all the different form factors because the battery has to fit into a very limited space and around other components. Most don't even bother removable batteries of any type because it just adds to the size, weight, and cost.

so youre either lying about your speed, or your lack of experience

if you didnt have any time to slow down on a motorway slip road, youre far in excess of the speed limit, maybe closer to 100mph rather than kph
or youre a genuine idiot who doesnt know that releasing the throttle will slow you down
your call

either way, gigantic user error and an accident that should never happen, I hope your insurance premiums triple at a minimum

Makes me sad because I love the sport segment but it seems the only people who ride them are people who just like the aesthetic and donโ€™t care for doing anything other than highway pulls

They're popular at beach towns. I can see why. You can stack 'em in a pickup bed like bicycles and they have belt drive so the salt and sand don't eat chains.

I thought even if chemistry changes the electronisc control the charging profile, just like you can have different chemistries for smaller household batteries, yet we charge them with same devices from the same grid. But maybe this is more complex than AAs.

Thinking about buying a Nighster 975 for next bike. But my knee always hits the intake on cruisers and i dont know if i can go to a bike that doesnt have a slipper clutch.
They make good power and i want to customize it after the XLCR/1200XR.
Only thing i don't like is the fugly exhaust on the new gens. Harley shouldve given us the option for a true dual.

It depends on if the charging circuitry is in the battery pack and it's just being few mains voltage (unlikely) or if it's in the charging station. For those cylindrical battery chargers that will charge multiple chemistry types they have some fancy technique for determining what type the battery is and then it adjust its charging profile. That could potentially be done with a charging station too, so you don't have to divide up its capacity, but as you go higher in voltage and current ratings all the components required in the circuitry become more expensive.

I wish they were reliable, they look pretty good and it's exactly the type of dual sport bike I was looking for. The CRF 300L don't have enough power and the suspension is bland af, the gs 310 is jeeted, and the new drz 400 is ridicously expensive for what it is. I wish there were more japanese dual sports.

I don't doubt that, but the new gen just released and it's full of electrical problems. Will probably end up buying a 390 enduro anyways.
