Ok so basically there was this guy named Jeff Cooper who pioneered a lot of our modern concepts around tactical gunfighting and gun safety. He was a huge advocate for the 1911 and 45 ACP cartridge back when most civilians and cops were still using revolvers. Then in the mid 1970's, modern "wonder nines" like the Beretta 92 and CZ 75 came onto the scene, and he fell in love with their ergos and capacity. Cooper wanted to bridge the gap between the high capacity of the double-stack 9mms and the power of magnum revolvers as the perfect law enforcement handgun. Remember that this was a decade after the 1960's when there were tons of race riots, and cops armed with six-shot 38spl revolvers were starting to feel outgunned and overwhelmed. Cooper partnered with Dornaus & Dixon Enterprises to create the Bren Ten pistol (sort of a hybrid of the 1911 and CZ 75), along with Norma to create the 10mm cartridge for it.
