Car have variances, so while two cars may be displaying the same speed on their speedometers there can be a multiple mph difference in actual speed. Further, even when using cruise control no two cars will react the same to variations in terrain. Lastly, trying to keep off a slower car in front is annoying as hell so it's better to just go ahead and pass. You'll both be happier.

And what's with this speed limit worship anyway? It's not like it's some moral failing such as not putting the shopping cart in the corral or anything.

Without going in to that, everyone going the same speed makes it way way easier for the whole group to respond to each other. Predictable traffic with no suprises. The world cant be perfect and people will need to speed up or slow down to make their exits and stuff, pass trucks and slow people, but generally sticking to the posted speed plus or minus 5 keeps it safer than this insane attempt to convince people it doesnt matter.

If I am in the left lane, I am 99% of the time wanting to be in a turn lane/make a left turn. I always do. I'm not everyone, but I understand that anticipating a left turn is acceptable and the law reflects this.
However, I have ridden passenger when people hog the left lane because their turn is 5 fucking miles ahead, that is not acceptable imo and I'd harass them if I knew there was no turn coming up.

"Highways" technically includes many big shopping roads in towns with lefts and stoplights. On interstates (what most call highways) I've seen a couple lefts but it's usually when an interstate ends.

I will use left lane for overtakes and no, I won't speed.

Also, the more you tailgate the slower the overtake will be. Once a BMW boyracer did not understand this, get the hint, so it took almost a complete minute to overtake a bus.

Your picture is a terrible example. There's a car on the shoulder up ahead. In most sane states they will advise you to always pull to the second lane (if there) to give the person on the shoulder room.

Even more important if it's a cop or paramedic on the shoulder. It's against the law in a lot of states to pass them without moving over or significantly dropping your speed (which is dangerous on most highways so it's always advised to just move over). Not doing so risks you getting a ticket if that cop is feeling gay that day.

At least in the US, most highways have speed limits due to the oil crisis of the 70s. The other justifications came later.

Where I live, the two main issues are drivers never getting up to speed in on-ramps, and refusing to use lanes correctly for passing. Speed is all over the place, trucks and such will stay right but faster traffic still tries to pass using the right lane even if the left lane is empty.
If you're trying to pass slow traffic by using the middle lane, some retard will come up on your ass and try to weave in front of you from the right. Most of the time they misjudge and get stuck behind the trucks. And they aren't trying to get to the next off-ramp, they're just acting like motorcycles thinking they can weave through lanes.

The law in my state says that if you're in the fast lane, and someone is approaching you, you yield and get over to not impede their travel. This is because if someone else is going to speed you want to let them get farther away from you and not escalate the situation with road rage.
