>We see this with a lot of BMWs. You may not like the people who drive them. You may not like the styling. You may not like the way they supported the Nazi war machine or what they did to Rover. You may have a million reasons why you would never buy such a thing — I know I have — but the simple truth remains: when it comes to the business of driving, they really are very good indeed.

Never sold in the UK. He did review the "hot" variants of the 2nd and 3rd gen, but the closest I can get is James May saying it's "really quite an interesting car" during one of his wine specials when encountering one in France.

They tested the cheapest cars in brrrritain in one very old episode, which were all Soviet imports.
They had a Škoda Typ 742 105 and according to Jeremy it wasn't nearly as bad as he thought, the drivability was okay, it got the job done and build quality was present "more than you could say about any domestic car in the same or higher price range"

Not driven much but it’s certainly the best car I’ve ever driven. Quiet and smooth like driving on a cloud and the 400 hp doesn’t make it sports car level but it’s zippy enough to get through traffic. Full sized too so plenty of cargo space and roomy enough for a family or four grown adults

My goal is to maintain it and keep it running as long as possible and hopefully the SUV trend dies down enough for them to come back. If not I’ll probably looking into Cadillac CT5/6 V black wing or some Mercedes or BMW sedans. Assuming cars aren’t all bastard EVs by then

>by European standards this car is rubbish. Its engine has wasteful, unused capacity that turns fuel into nothing, it couldn’t get from one end of a country lane to the other without running out of brakes and it handles like a newborn donkey.

>There’s more, too. It’s got a gruff engine note, its interior has the panache of an Afghan’s cave and . . . and . . . and I can’t go on. You see, I’m running through all this car’s bad points but I’m afraid my mind is consumed by the bit where I was doing 65mph on the 101, listening to some Eagles on 104.3.
And then by the subsequent memory of grumbling along the waterfront in San Francisco itself, the city setting for Bullitt, the film that etched the Mustang for all time on the petrolhead’s radar.
You see, I kept thinking I’m in a Mustang in San Francisco on a glorious September afternoon. And I liked that a lot. I liked it so much that I became consumed with the notion of maybe taking a small part of the experience home with me.

>Whenever I drive a GTI I’m always full of admiration for its abilities, but when I was driving that Mustang I liked it. And that’s sort of more important.

>Verdict Horrid but very loveable

I can't really argue with anything Clarkson said, but I think time has been very kind to the S197, because all newer cars got worse with time while it still retains it's charms.

“The Škoda Enyaq. Now, this is an electric car from the Czech Republic, which sounds about as exciting as a beige cardigan. But actually, it’s not dreadful.

First of all, it looks…well, quite handsome. In that understated, IKEA flat-pack sort of way. You won’t be stopped in the street by anyone saying, ‘Oh wow, is that the new Enyaq?’ because, frankly, no one knows or cares.

Inside, however, it’s all rather lovely. Škoda has realised that if you’re going to make a car weigh more than the moon because of all the batteries, you might as well give it a nice cabin with big screens and seats that feel like they were stolen from a German executive saloon.

And as for driving it…well, it’s an electric car. You put your foot down and—whoosh—it accelerates briskly until you get bored. The steering has all the feedback of a dead trout, but it’s quiet and smooth, and it does the job.

The problem—and it’s a big one—is that it costs about the same as a small house in the north of England. And if you want the version with more range, Škoda demands even more money, presumably so you can drive all the way to Prague to tell them it’s too expensive.

But if you absolutely must buy an electric SUV and you don’t want to look like an estate agent in a Tesla, the Enyaq is actually rather a sensible choice.

>But the Elise is not the best British sports car... because the
Mazda MX-5 is! Yes, yes I admit it; it's not entirely British. In
fact it could be argued that it's sort of completely... Japanese!
But you see, the thing is, if you go to Tokyo and order bacon, eggs,
mushrooms, and so-on-and-so-forth, even though they're in Japan
they'll still call it 'a full English Breakfast'. Ideas travel, so I
don't care where this car was designed, or where it was made, it's
still a full English Sports Car!

>The MX-5 kicked off the sports car renaissance, and ever since it
came along in 1989 everyone else has been trying to beat it with more
power, more-wheel-drive, more whizz-bangs, and more fancy gearboxes.
But you can't beat the original recipe, a recipe that was written
more than sixty years ago - keep it simple! The Mazda has a
not-very-powerful 1.8 litre engine at the front, where it belongs,
not in the middle. And drive goes to the back, like it should. It's
as complicated as wood!... So who cares if it doesn't have an
electric hood and climate control. A bit chilly? Well you're
British for heavens sake - wear a hat!

Thank you Clarkson, very cool!

A lot of his track reviews are really boring. The best one he ever did was for the Phantom in series 2

He said it was indestructible. Turns out all he had to do was wait for the rust to eat it lol
