2003 suzuki intruder. It died after riding it for a while, can now idle Ok but dies with any throttle.
Evidence suggests the carbs need to be cleaned as it sat about 3 weeks between when i bought it and when i learned how to ride it. Or possibly rebuilt. Is this something a newb with no mechanical experience can do in the parking lot of her apartment? It’s my only mode of transportation and getting it towed to a shop for this is going to be like $600.
I understand the tasks will be -

>clean the carbs with special carb cleaner, clear jet especially, replace gaskets etc as necessary

Carbs dont need to be cleaned/rebuilt just from sitting for 3 weeks.

This is like people who have fuel issues in their car and automatically every swinging dick on a forum will chime in with "its the fuel filter!" over the fuel pump- stock fuel filters will still be clean after 50 years because sediment isnt getting into the tank. But the fuel pump is a mechanical device that wears out in 130k miles.

I'll bet 100 bucks that its a fuel delivery issue.
Pull the hose from carb assembly and see how fast it drains into a bucket.

Sporster S pays to the Vrod, and is running a detuned Panam engine.
Nightster 975 is a continuation of the traditional sporster
The engines have different heads.
Kreusi got 119Rwhp on the 975 with panam filter and custom exhaust. With about $1k in mods you are at stock sporster power, so the potential is there.
The problem is these bikes have little aftermarket, but they sell from the dealers i spoke to.
Just watch out for the electrical issues, make sure the updates have been done before you buy.
I expect the 975 to outlive the sporster, you can customize it more, and it still makes good power, and its comfier.
I wish they gave us the bronx, but i might just get a nightster and lift the seat.

IMO I have a bias toward small dual sports, but depending on what you want to do (go fast, full throttle or do anything) your choice is between the CBR250 and the XR150L.

The XR150L is a great first bike choice because it's 150CCs, you cannot screw something up like whiskey throttle it because it simply doesn't have the power to get you in trouble. And, if you add $500 of upgrades, you can do this:

Because it's a classic carbureted bike, a simple airbox mod + Exhaust + new jets means it can keep up with highway speeds, about 60 MPH. It also has the benefit of being able to go off-road because it is ultimately a dual sport.

Or just apply a few of those mods, like don't bother upgrading the bore or the head or even touching the engine and just the easy stuff like the carb and the exhaust and the airbox, and it'll do 60. Arguably you could get 60 with just the right jets.

This is the bike I grew up on the back of. It's still kicking, despite time's best efforts. Right turn signal is completely dead, the front brake switch doesn't trigger the brake light, the brake lever wobbles out of place and is at an awkward angle, and the left turn signal doesn't blink, just stays on.
I mean...other than that, it's pretty slick it's loud and fast. I can't discount the history either, I'm pretty emotionally tied to the bike.
