Is there such a thing as a home motorcycle maintenance course? Everything I'm finding is about getting certified as a mechanic, which I do not want. I want to build basic skills & confidence. Basically the MSF course for maintenance on your own bike.
>Here are the basic tools you will need
>how you check your air system and change the filter.
>how you change the oil.
>how to maintain your fuel system.
>how to maintain, repair, replace a chain
>how to replace a tire
I looked up some youtube videos but it's not the same as real classes.

>Is there such a thing as a home motorcycle maintenance course?
I took one years ago at my local community college. They have a large vo-tech area on campus, and they had a dude who held two classes: a regular style class, and a long Saturday class you could bring in a bike and get help working on it. The instructor was this cool old biker. Every year he had meetups at his property for former students. They were lots of fun.

nta but even those of us with dads didn't necessarily have ones who rode bikes or knew how to wrench on them. Mine at least drove manual sporty cars most of my life and could do DIY shit but even that seems to be pretty rare, and I had to learn most of the wrenching stuff I know on my own or from friends who worked at shops etc. (And then eventually I worked at a shop myself and learned a lot there.)

we were poor so dad always bought shitboxes and I'd watch him work on stuff and eventually helped. when I started driving at 16 I got a shitbox of my own and carried on the tradition. doing engine/trans swaps, replacing clutches, suspension, brakes, it's all easy it's just a step by step process. you learn tricks along the way but it's mostly "how tf do I remove this bolt?".

Let's get something straight here.
Im not some tweaker that recently discovered Harbor Freight sells welders.
I was lucky enough to work under God's of Dirt that have their own wiki pages.
The references on my resume look like an Alma Mater mailing list for SCORE.
Ontop of that, ACTUAL CBX owners love the idea of the build. They recognize the uniqueness of the bike AND of what im building.

Seriously dude- I have the MASTER PROOF SET of A-arms for the MICKEY THOMPSON stadium racers.
Do you even know who that man was?!
>Why do I have them?
Because we cleaned the shop and they were in the rafters above the tool room and I asked my boss (Rory Chenowth) if I could have them....

Im old, broken and grumpy.

It was kinda the opposite in my family, parents made good money but worked a shitload of overtime and biz travel (including multi-month/year projects out of town) so they weren't around a whole lot and my dad didn't have time or energy for much in the way of mandatory DIY or wrenching, just some occasional hobby stuff that was more toward woodworking and modelmaking etc.

>>28499686
Yeah that's definitely true. I at least knew how a ratchet or a drill worked and so on. I learned a lot on my own and would even show my dad how to properly do shit as a kid though, he was kinda clueless and even before the internet I watched a shitload of those home improvement TV shows and learned stuff from them, and probably half the xmas presents etc. that I asked for as a kid were tools that I'd then use to do most of the wrenching around the house even when I was like 12.

Im sitting here trying to explain how the feel of the geometry of a KX differs from a CR and youre trying to sell people on the (1 of 2) bikes you've ever ridden.

I should agree, as somebody who was a high-level version of that monkey for years (built/maintained race cars) but it's a lot more convenient sometimes to just do basic shit yourself instead of waiting for a slot at a shop and maybe being without your bike for a few days. It's also just fun sometimes, not so much when working on a shitbox where everything is a pain in the ass but doing upgrades to a new/well maintained clean bike is fun.

Based. I wonder if my potential autistic jap gf would be down to ride, she likes every single bike post I make without fail (she likes almost all of my posts though) and I know she's into cars and was a bit of a yanki in her younger days. She's tall for a Japanese girl too (5'7"ish) so could actually ride a lot of stuff that most can't.

Took me a long time to accept it too but eventually I hit the point where coming home from my job where I was building championship race, time attack, and autocross cars to find that 16 people had called me a retard on /o/ because I told somebody not to waste money on shitty chinese coilovers was more than I had enough fucks to deal with.

>Why are harleys so ubiquitous in america.
Boomers' daddies bought back 80 gorillion surplus Harleys from the Army after WW2 and they became a meme the same way milsurp rifles did on /k/. Then Harley kept making new bikes for the boomers and subsequent generations and they were actually fairly competitive until the CB750. Unfortunately the boomers also aborted 50 million GenXers so the generational taste turnover in the 70s was a wet fart, and millennials were poor as shit thanks to the 2008 crash, so Harley sales to boomers and LARPers are STILL the majority of US motorcycle sales.

Thanks bro, I have a video on YouTube the stock exhaust sounds decent. Not a whole lot of options available for the exhaust rn. Austin racing has a slip on but $1700 for a slip on that does nothing kinda seems like a waste. The Termis are pretty much the only option worth going for rn. Hoping for a cat delete mid-pipe to drop, honestly Iโ€™d keep the stock exhausts if that happened.

>buy too much bike
>buy the wrong bike
>realize it's a meem
>don't feel like paying
>stage theft, keep bike for parts, get paid by insurance

On the left, 2 Soviet lifters for pushrods. Elegant yet efficient, if the cam face surface wears down too much, you can just make a new block out of scrap steel if need be and be on your way.

On the right, decadent western "engineering", the westoid is too stupid to figure out a proper lifter, but instead relies on caveman tier contraptions.
Simpletons.

1. What's you budget homie? preferred layout? sport, cruiser, naked? I guarantee I can find you something.

2. Don't be a pussy, all three prairie provinces are your market, not just Sask. If the right bike is in Edmonton, or Winnipeg, or somewhere in between them, you can get there and back in a single weekend, that's within range if you really want the bike.

3. Have an open mind and don't be too picky.

4. My condolences for having to live in Saskatchewan, I would never wish such a fate on any man.

idk why the fuck we dont have a generic open source car yet, like....how many cunts have to try and figure out lifters. theres like 50+ car manufacturers all making slightly different lifters that operate within 2% of eachother. i should be able to just go to an auto parts store and order a lifter in a specific diameter.

Hi anons. Have not ridden a bike in 15 years. Finally in a position I can get something used. Found this on a local marketplace in my price range. Do u guys think its a good bike to get for as u can call a fresh rider as a daily? Live in a rural area, so most of my driving will be off city. It has 70k km on the clock and it's 2002. Any specific parts to look into when meeting seller? Is it worth getting something this old today? Are there any alternatives in a cruiser class?

depends, v4s are rare as fuck now and will be outlawed soon because raisins. if the engine configuration is not what youre after id probably look at some newer sport tourer. but yea a v4 with a single sided swingarm is never happening again, consider the newest panigale v4 with widescreen TV and 250hp is using a standard swingarm.

Would you consider a 2006 VFR 800 with 75k miles? It has a complete service history, new shock, original paint and it's in great visual shape. It's listed for 2.2k eurodollars, can probably get it down to 2k. There's nothing for that price that's fuel injected and not a 125cc. I barely ride 3k miles per year so I figured I'm not risking much. Even if I replace all the bearings, fork rebuild etc... it would still get me under 3k and same gen VFRs with half the mileage are going for 4-4.5k in my area.

And 3/4 of that life is gone.

Even if its been well maintained and makes it past 100k thats still a waste of money when you can pay a few bucks more for something with 30k miles and get 3x as many years out of it. Its not some rare unobtainium bike. Find another one.

You guys have a point, and I am watching nationwide for my dream bike (Triumph Bonneville). But it'd be hard to justify a road trip for any other used bike I might be interested in. That's one thing a stealership would be good for, since I could trust them enough to send a deposit and hold the bike, but I haven't found a good way of searching dealers across Canada for what I want. Lots aren't on sites like Autotrader. Anyways thanks for letting me vent my frustration

Use Kijiji nigga, no one uses auto trader for bikes in Canada.

Also, my experience is that most people are pretty chill and accommodating if they know you're travelling a fair distance, since it generally shows pretty significant intent to purchase, also unless it's some insane bargain, people aren't usually getting flooded with inquiries, they'll work with you.

afaik there's stuff that goes wrong on the 390s, but the engines themselves have a pretty good rep. There's a dude on youtube who put a ton of hard ADV miles on his 390 and I know there were some other parts of the bike that he struggled with (suspension stuff iirc) but the engine held up aside from maybe a sensor issue?

I've had a sensor issue and I bet it was the same one. The position sensor on the gear drum comes loose and the bike either loses it's position or shuts off entirely. Happened to me on the freeway once, I'm just glad it didn't lock the wheel up. Tightened it back up and turned off the quickshift while I was at it just in case. Problem hasn't come back

vtec viffers are fun as fuck. you will not find anything close to the reliability/refinedness/fun/comfyness of an VFR for that price.
It's a bulletproof Honda V4, it will out life your children if you put in some oil once in a while.
Just ask for the last fork rebuild, at least the fork oil should be replaced ever 30k km so yours might be due soon.

>>28500195
>newest panigale v4 with widescreen TV and 250hp is using a standard swingarm
official statement is because that much horsepower needs the extra strength of a standard swingarm. might be true, might not be true, i think its both. Cheaper, steonger and lighter than an equivalent in single sided. but yeah...

only thing we can hope for is a new V3 compressor vfr downgrade successor

>built well
OEM bikes are a BASIC platform certified to meet current government standards using the CHEAPEST parts available to meet minimum standards in order to avoid lawsuits.

To a pro, in no way would they ever be considered 'built well'. Unless you consider riding to the corner store to pick up this weeks weed products 'good enuff'.
