posted in last thread but again to maybe get more answers:
guys, im planning on doing a little offroad trip on a 701 sumo with knobby tires, but 17 inchers.
so i got the sumo, like pic related, but knobby tires on it.
how shit of an idea is that? i know that people ride the routes im planning on on africa twins and GSes and teneres etc, but im not sure how bad it will be with the 17 inch front.
any experience with that?
>>28514889It'll probably be extra tiring and holes/big rocks are going to suck more.
>>28514895to be honest from what i expect it shouldnt be much worse than a little "worse" gravel roads, maybe a single trail for short whiles every now and then
i was riding a gravel road with supermoto tires and to be honest that fucking sucked, i dont know how much difference the knobbies make, or if the difference is mainly the larger front wheel
>>28514898Oh I'm retarded. I skim-read your post and just saw the road tires.
If they're knobbies they'll be a lot better than the road tires.
But also, you could just get some 701 dirt wheels.
>>28514900>dirt wheelsWouldnt wheels made out of some type of metal be better?
Does a 5-year-old tire have to be replaced, or not ? It only has 3000 km on it and looks fine

so yeah i would probably always choose a bike that i can utilize more in daily riding than some rocket from which i barely use half the potential of, its more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow
also really depends on where you are, what roads you have etc.

Hi. I'm not a rider but I always wanted to be. Recently spoke with my uncle who used to ride all the time ages ago, something I didn't actually know, and he has a Honda CL350 and and Honda CB750 sitting in a garage, both bikes that haven't run since 2000. He's offering me one for free, so long as I get it running myself. They both have all their parts and he recently tried to get the 750 running with no luck, but the guy isn't exactly mechanically inclined.
Which one should I grab? I'm moving out soon and need a daily, and as far as I know Honda's are great from a reliability perspective. As far as I know they both have most of their parts, toolkits, everything, he's the first owner for both. I have some experience with engines too. I'm really attracted to the 750 but I know it's a bigger bike and might be too much for me to bite off. Thanks for any advice.
>>28515515>as far as I know Honda's are great from a reliability perspectivePre 2000 Yes
Post 2000 No
>they're getting their bikes for free
>>28515515A CB750 is a very manageable and pelasant bike. 750 sounds big, but the CB750 inline four has a very mild power curve that is easy to live with. They made an absolute shitload of them so parts are pretty easy to get and there is a lot of information and communities out there about them.
They're really quite easy to work on once you get familiar with them. The biggest challenge will be the four carbs. For a bike that's been sitting that long, that's the #1 place to start. They'll all need to be taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and then sync'd which requires a vacuum guage which you'll need to buy.
I went through all this with a 1983 CB750SC and I don't regret any of it. Had some great times with that machine before I sold it off for something more modern.
That would be my choice, although it would probably be easier to learn to ride and build confidence on the CL350 because as I said the 750 is a heavy pig.
>>28515515Either or. The 350 is going to be easier to wrench on due to having half as many cylinders, but will be pretty slow by modern standards. The CB750 is going to be much more comfortable keeping up with traffic, assuming you can get it running and all 4 carbs synced up. Both are going to be a little scary for a noob because you're dealing with old suspension, old frames and drum brakes.
>>28515515>might be too much for me to bite offIt's not. I have faith in you.

Just hope it isn't a crappy color or REALLY rotted through, but a free bike is a free bike, right?

I'm looking at a striple, but almost all of the used ones are R's. I was told that the RS was a much more premium trim, but they seem to be few and far between. Anyone have much experience with either? I wouldn't mind waiting for the right RS to show up if it's actually worth
who is this for?
if I want a KTM, I can go on Marketplace right now and get an 890 with 15k km for $11,000.
non KTM? used T7s hover around $10k CAD
>>28515639It's for people with shorter legs and/or smaller frames.
>>28515639>who is this forIt's for people that don't want or need the addtional power. At 70lbs lighter than an 890 with similar ergonomics, it's going to perform as well on the dirt anyway and be easier to pick up. If you're going to compare prices, compare used to used or new to new
>>28515640They have the same seat hieght
>>28515639>7k new>380lbs at 40hpNew riders would be my first guess. If someone just wants to beat the everloving shit out of it and don't care much about riding far, they'll just get the enduro r instead.
>>28515654The suspension will compress more with a rider on it, the narrower frame will make it easier to get feet on the ground even with the same seat height, and the lower weight will make it much easier for a smaller person to be comfortable on. Idk what's so hard to understand about this.
>>28515671Honestly no, though I don't blame you for thinking so. Bajaj just made the enduro model the same bike as the adventure R but with minimalist fairings and fewer features. Its more of a trim than a seperate model at all, and all things xonsidered there's no good reason to get an enduro over the adventure R
>>28515679>no trim, less weight30lbs lighter, if the internet isn't full of shit, is significant for a dirt bike. I also don't want trim on my bike if I'm expecting to end up dick in the dirt at some point. I'd hoped they'd have at least put some metal handguards instead of plastic bullshit, but $7k is always going to be nickel and dime shit.
>>28515675>what's so hard to understandThe fact that it can't be reconciled with reality. Suspension compression is dependent on your setting, they both have good WP suspensions and have similar travel. The difference in seat hieght with a rider is negligable (if you sit on both this becomes obvious) and the seat width is also about the same. Having ridden both, I'm telling you the difference is not in the ergos. If you were a rider that wanted a lighter bike and didn't care about power, the 390 would be a great option. It's definitely meant for the beginner market but it can also fill a niche other than that
>>28515687If it really is 30lbs difference that's noticable. Last I saw it was basically the same weight because they had to hit the right PWR for euro and asia sales. If you're new to dirt then you're on the money in that less shit on the bike is better, because you're going to drop it and it's going to get beat the fuck up. For non-beginners, though, it doesn't seem all that worth it unless you want the look.
>>28515491>>28515549It's Honda's version of the Morphous
>>28515542Electric vehicles are really practical if you live and work in a city and have a driveway you can charge them in. Just looking at zero, my everyday commute (1hr, 60 miles each way) is impossible for any of their models. Even if it was half as long, 60 miles, versus 110 mile range on their models, Iโm thinking to myself
>110 on the highway claimed >probably more like 90 miles when the weather is down in the 50s >probably more like 70 miles when you remove the marketing enthusiasm And suddenly itโs a very close call if I want to do anything besides go right to work and come right home.
>>28515542>>28515707This desu. I have nothing against EVs and I enjoyed test rising the Livewire when I did, but until they can make one with a ~150mile minimum range (at 70+ mph, with uphill grades) that can recharge to full in one hour it's not going to be able to replace any of my bikes.
If I commuted in town on a bike, it'd be totally different and I'd probably actually buy a Livewire. But I do mostly longer rides on the weekends and for that they aren't cutting it.
>>28515712Ironically WFH killed my desire for an electric motorcycle. If I was still going in to an office tower with EV charge spots five days a week it would've been a straight upgrade over my pedal assist ebike, but now all my rides are discretionary.
>>28515542Unless they improve battery tech they can't compete. They are slow and have shit range. Plus electric companies keep jacking up rates and governments keep building data centers. At least there are multiple petrol companies. I have 1 electric company. EVs don't make logical sense. They are just the newest shiny toy for idiots
>>28515712Itโs hard to compete with scooters too
One EV selling point is โdonโt pay for gasโ but if Iโm scooting around town at 75mpg+ and fill up my three gallon tank once a month am I really thinking to myself โha! 10 dollars saved! It pays for itself!โ
>>28515542including charge time, it'd take you a week to go the same distance I can go in 21 hours.
I hate race bike fags. ADHD "gotta go fast" MFers. Yeah you gotta go fast right into your grave. You think youre bad ass? You think top gun maverick? You're just a bug spat. I spit on you.
>>28515742Race bike fags can be pretty annoying, but this level of seethe is pretty cringe too.
Just get a comfy bike and be nice, what's so hard?
>>28515742I hate the videos like one Iโve just seen the thumbnail for โsuperbikes in Morocco!โ This sort of thing โcommuting to work in Bangkok!โ
I already know every thirdy in sub tropical climates rides a scooter to work every day, of course you can do it on a motorcycle. I want to see like โJanuary commute in Chicago/oslo/seoulโ first world but cold and snowy, letโs see how you do on your super sport

Was coming behind a cop today while lane splitting when the rider in front of me suddenly stopped lanesplitting and started sitting in traffic
I waited until he moved to the left side of the lane and split past him and gave him a little 2WD as I passed. When he saw me pass the cop he started following shortly after
Itโs so funny whenever people get skeezed out by splitting past cops, itโs California bro weโre good just donโt blow his doors off haha
>>28515742>>28515747I canโt imagine seething this hard over someone riding a motorcycle lol

>>2851571980% of the mass involved in a gasoline engine reaction is atmospheric oxygen. Batteries that can compete with that would have the energy+power density of high explosives. Hydrogen fuel cells are competitive on mass but not volumetric density. BEV cars just give up on competing at equal mass and pack in literal tons of batteries.

>>28515721I've never actually bothered to do the calculations and compare the fuel cost of my bikes before.
-KTM 125 Duke - 90mpg being generous - around ยฃ6 per gallon - ยฃ0.07 per mile
-Zero DS - averages somewhere around 10 miles per kWh - ยฃ0.26 per kWh - ยฃ0.026 per mile
I just recently crossed 10.6k miles on the Zero so it's cost me roughly ยฃ275 to do so (a little less because I've charged for free in some situations). The same distance on the Duke would have cost ยฃ742. With a difference in purchase price of around ยฃ5.5k I'd need to do 125k miles to break even, or 78k miles if I was always charging for free.
One of the things I do like however about riding an electric bike is being able to charge at home, not having to go out of my way to go to a petrol station. I wake up in the morning and go out to my bike and it's always full (if needed).
>>28515706Is it safe to call this the Plymouth Prowler of motorcycles? If not, what would be?
