guys, im planning on doing a little offroad trip on a 701 sumo with knobby tires, but 17 inchers.
so i got the sumo, like pic related, but knobby tires on it.

how shit of an idea is that? i know that people ride the routes im planning on on africa twins and GSes and teneres etc, but im not sure how bad it will be with the 17 inch front.

i was riding a gravel road with supermoto tires and to be honest that fucking sucked, i dont know how much difference the knobbies make, or if the difference is mainly the larger front wheel

It depends on where the power is. I love bikes that have enough power and torque to be well behaved in traffic or highway cruising at low revs but can also activate goon mode in the higher revs. I mostly ride on public roads or twisty track so top end over ~130mph is irrelevant to me.

If I could go back in time I would probably stop myself from buying a liter and go for something less powerful instead. Liter bikes are cool, but the riding I do and the level of risk I'm prepared to assume doesn't justify owning it. Most of the time I'm out exploring backroads and small towns where you're barely getting it out of first anyway.
Echoing what other anons said, it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.

Tubed tire with tubliss. I know they leak over time, but the problem is as soon as I start putting air into the high pressure bladder, it leaks right put of the rim at the stem. I know I've had a similar peoblem before, but I believe that was just the low pressure side and it was because the high pressure bladder wasn't up to pressure. I just don't want to pull the new tire off for nothing if it's something silly

Every time I’ve ridden a Ural I’ve had a blast
I’ve tried the can-am three wheelers and they’re a lot of fun but at the end of the day I can’t get over the cvt and how ugly they are
I’m actually mid budget right now for a sidecar outfit, I wanted to work with freedom sidecar here in PA but he hasn’t answered my phone calls.
What would be the dream is if he (or someone else) could make me a sidecar that comes off relatively quickly so I could just attach it for the worst of winter or when my grandkids are over etc

Hi. I'm not a rider but I always wanted to be. Recently spoke with my uncle who used to ride all the time ages ago, something I didn't actually know, and he has a Honda CL350 and and Honda CB750 sitting in a garage, both bikes that haven't run since 2000. He's offering me one for free, so long as I get it running myself. They both have all their parts and he recently tried to get the 750 running with no luck, but the guy isn't exactly mechanically inclined.

Which one should I grab? I'm moving out soon and need a daily, and as far as I know Honda's are great from a reliability perspective. As far as I know they both have most of their parts, toolkits, everything, he's the first owner for both. I have some experience with engines too. I'm really attracted to the 750 but I know it's a bigger bike and might be too much for me to bite off. Thanks for any advice.

A CB750 is a very manageable and pelasant bike. 750 sounds big, but the CB750 inline four has a very mild power curve that is easy to live with. They made an absolute shitload of them so parts are pretty easy to get and there is a lot of information and communities out there about them.

They're really quite easy to work on once you get familiar with them. The biggest challenge will be the four carbs. For a bike that's been sitting that long, that's the #1 place to start. They'll all need to be taken apart, cleaned, put back together, and then sync'd which requires a vacuum guage which you'll need to buy.

I went through all this with a 1983 CB750SC and I don't regret any of it. Had some great times with that machine before I sold it off for something more modern.

That would be my choice, although it would probably be easier to learn to ride and build confidence on the CL350 because as I said the 750 is a heavy pig.
Anonymous No.28515530 >>28515551
>>28515515
Either or. The 350 is going to be easier to wrench on due to having half as many cylinders, but will be pretty slow by modern standards. The CB750 is going to be much more comfortable keeping up with traffic, assuming you can get it running and all 4 carbs synced up. Both are going to be a little scary for a noob because you're dealing with old suspension, old frames and drum brakes.

30lbs lighter, if the internet isn't full of shit, is significant for a dirt bike. I also don't want trim on my bike if I'm expecting to end up dick in the dirt at some point. I'd hoped they'd have at least put some metal handguards instead of plastic bullshit, but $7k is always going to be nickel and dime shit.
Anonymous No.28515694

>what's so hard to understand
The fact that it can't be reconciled with reality. Suspension compression is dependent on your setting, they both have good WP suspensions and have similar travel. The difference in seat hieght with a rider is negligable (if you sit on both this becomes obvious) and the seat width is also about the same. Having ridden both, I'm telling you the difference is not in the ergos. If you were a rider that wanted a lighter bike and didn't care about power, the 390 would be a great option. It's definitely meant for the beginner market but it can also fill a niche other than that
Anonymous No.28515701
>>28515687
If it really is 30lbs difference that's noticable. Last I saw it was basically the same weight because they had to hit the right PWR for euro and asia sales. If you're new to dirt then you're on the money in that less shit on the bike is better, because you're going to drop it and it's going to get beat the fuck up. For non-beginners, though, it doesn't seem all that worth it unless you want the look.

Just looking at zero, my everyday commute (1hr, 60 miles each way) is impossible for any of their models. Even if it was half as long, 60 miles, versus 110 mile range on their models, I’m thinking to myself

I already know every thirdy in sub tropical climates rides a scooter to work every day, of course you can do it on a motorcycle. I want to see like β€œJanuary commute in Chicago/oslo/seoul” first world but cold and snowy, let’s see how you do on your super sport

Was coming behind a cop today while lane splitting when the rider in front of me suddenly stopped lanesplitting and started sitting in traffic
I waited until he moved to the left side of the lane and split past him and gave him a little 2WD as I passed. When he saw me pass the cop he started following shortly after
It’s so funny whenever people get skeezed out by splitting past cops, it’s California bro we’re good just don’t blow his doors off haha

80% of the mass involved in a gasoline engine reaction is atmospheric oxygen. Batteries that can compete with that would have the energy+power density of high explosives. Hydrogen fuel cells are competitive on mass but not volumetric density. BEV cars just give up on competing at equal mass and pack in literal tons of batteries.

I've never actually bothered to do the calculations and compare the fuel cost of my bikes before.

-KTM 125 Duke - 90mpg being generous - around Β£6 per gallon - Β£0.07 per mile

-Zero DS - averages somewhere around 10 miles per kWh - Β£0.26 per kWh - Β£0.026 per mile

I just recently crossed 10.6k miles on the Zero so it's cost me roughly Β£275 to do so (a little less because I've charged for free in some situations). The same distance on the Duke would have cost Β£742. With a difference in purchase price of around Β£5.5k I'd need to do 125k miles to break even, or 78k miles if I was always charging for free.

One of the things I do like however about riding an electric bike is being able to charge at home, not having to go out of my way to go to a petrol station. I wake up in the morning and go out to my bike and it's always full (if needed).

Absolutely key to the whole thing. I pity the fool who can't charge overnight. Apartment dwellers complain of this. They don't realize the power argument any apt tenant can make:

Dear Landlord,
If you let me charge my motorcycle for free in the garden with an extension cord to the laundry room, I will take it up the elevator every night and charge it in the hall or my apt and when the LITHIUMB battery EXPLODES in to a FIREBALL of FLAMING DETH it will all be YOUR FAULT.
Understand? Only YOU can prevent apartment fires.

Yours 4 eva,

And you of course are. You can't really compare country to country, and even if you're electricity is cheaper so is your gas so it's probably going to end up fairly similar.

>Absolutely key to the whole thing. I pity the fool who can't charge overnight. Apartment dwellers complain of this
I may actually have to move at some point (pops died and tenancy is looking like it will automatically transfer to mum who doesn't live here because she's in a dementia ward, and there's a limit of one transfer so when she goes I'd be kicked out). So far all I'm really eligible for is 1 bedroom apartments (what we call flats) and many are second floor or higher so I'd be hanging an extension cord out the window.
