To be completely honest the himmy is the only adv bike i'd consider (well, aside from a used BMW but the status the GS has must come from something i guess) and i'm currently very tempted by the guerrilla, they gave me a nice offer on a silver one with my beta as a trade in and it would be a nice little step up with an absurd milage and comfort upgrades compared to 'lil air cooled 350 sumo

then it's easy as shit. i got an xs750 in spring 2021 for cheap and never had to do any work to it. hardest part of owning it was transferring the title from the dead owner.

seems like you're a new rider so you should know that "big" UJM bikes like your GS are notably shittier than modern bikes, brakes are poor, frames are shit, weight is distributed poorly and heavy, bolts are made of pot metal. so if you don't do your research on the model/know what to look for, or you do but you're unlucky, you're gonna have a bad time. if you insist on the grandpa bike get a more contemporary 750 nighthawk, ZR-7, or any of the other detuned sport bikes japan has put out. id like to get a cb1100 in the next few years

Depends on where you are. In the country or in smaller cities you're likely to run into Harley types which are kinda sucky. In big cities you're dealing with squids and sports bike kiddies who only want to go fast and then die. Or in smaller amounts, cafe racer wannabes, but that's fairly rare.
There are plenty of good people in the biking scene. But like with most other things, there's plenty of dogshit chaff so keep that in mind.

I personally ride alone. But that's just me.

>do I even want to?
In my experience, no, meeting people online is nicer because you can see if they’re worth your time. There’s a lot of people who ride bikes who are dumb, rude, annoying, or outright dangerous. Tends to attract a certain type.

Scooter buddy is loving the Vstrom, as soon as he could he went riding with me and hit every one of his favorite roads in his area until the sun went down and then a few more.
He’s still struggling with shifting and feels scared by the jerkiness that sometimes comes with it and I have to keep telling him to upshift quick so he stops slipping his clutch at 40mph during upshifts

This is much more fun to ride than my moto gucci.
It's slow as shit, like really slow, like a 50cc scooter will out accelerate it and probably has higher top speed if it's uncucked by the owner.
It's also heavy as shit and doesn't really like leaning into turns, the low center of gravity feels really weird as it tries to upright itself much harder than a normal bike, you almost have to fight against it in turns.
It's also a massive fuel hog, it burns anything between 10 to 15 litres per 100km, so uhh like 18 to 20mpg probably.

All in all it's an abysmal bike, I love it. Time to go for a roadtrip and see what breaks.

I rode one once, I thought it was unbalanced from a design perspective. Putting that much power in a bike with no fairings and with such a short wheelbase makes no sense. You can never really use the whole throttle anywhere because at low speeds you'll just crack wheelies (unless you let the nannies stop you, in which case you might as well be riding a sv650) and over 125mph you will want to get blown off so you might as well have gotten a sv650 too.

It's absolutely exhilarating to ride, but it feels more like enjoying pornography than it feels like enjoying art. Something about the enjoyment just feels cheap, like they bought the exhilaration by shoving a giant motor in a ridiculous application rather than by having a beautiful harmony of design elements. In contrast, consider the SV650 which everyone agrees is greater than a sum of its parts, perfectly balanced, and simply a transcendent machine to enjoy.

The svartpilen 401 is another one that gets the highest marks from every reviewer. People who ride bikes for a living say the 401 is one of their favorite bikes ever, like up there with the sv650, Hayabusa, vfr750, and the bandit 1250. It's an all-time legend that you really should not sell and is so much more enjoyable to ride in a city or explore your towns back roads then an mt09. You will absolutely regret if you sell it.

I would recommend getting a second bike which is very different from the husky and keep both. For example, Hayabusa, vfr750, and the bandit 1250 are fast, faired, and heavy, and will make great second bikes for you.

It's a huge undertaking.
You'd think an agricultural machine like this would just run forever, but you really need to be mindful with them.
That being said they're also somehow extremely rewarding and charming machines. Every time you jump on the seat and push it off the stand feels like your first time on a bike all over again.
I wouldn't trade the experiences I've had with Soviet bikes for any other bike.
They also have a bad habit of corrupting your mind, after experiencing the raw, unfiltered roughness of a bike like this, everything else just feels boring in comparison.

That being said if you want a similar experience, albeit a bit more expensive but way less headache inducing, go for airhead BMWs.
Unlike with Urals, you don't have to worry about dubious parts quality, although I'd dare claim Urals have better parts availability and aftermarket, mechanically that is, than BMWs.

You can't even ride these things "fast".
If you send it full throttle, you'll mangle the crankshaft.
You can just about wring out 60mph/100kmh of these things at the risk of sending the piston flying inside the crankcase.
The Izh you can do about 100kmh with without too much of a worry aside for maybe the kinda tiny brakes not being enough to stop you when karen in her tankimus maximus pulls in front of you.
The Ural sits comfortably putting along at about 60kmh max, about 35 to 40mph at the most without having to worry too much about destroying the engine.

which doesnt even make sense because i didnt manage to make the tire "work" even when fully opening it in the lean, it gives tons of confidence.

it just doesnt loo as torn apart and rough as the one from the tire testers, but oh well i just started again so im sure ill get the hang of it soon enough.

Upgraded to a lithium battery in my 82 Virago 750 a couple years ago. The bike was a project so it's pretty much sat until I got it roadworthy again this summer. The lithium battery I bought won't charge past 60% with my battery tender now. If I remember correctly, it would charge to 100% when it was new. 60% is plenty to start and run the bike, so I'm less concerned about the actual power of the battery VS the fact it won't fully charge. Also, on my first ride the bike ended up dying because the battery wasn't charging while riding. I changed the stator and rectifier but haven't put many miles on the bike yet to confirm it's charging the battery correctly. It's putting out 14v which is what it's supposed to on this bike. The reason for changing was that I had continuity between the stator and battery when the bike wasn't running, so I thought this meant that the stator was grounding out and not charging the battery. Once I started pulling it apart though, I found a wire the runs from the stator to the engine block. Not sure whether that's normal or not or if that could've been the reason for continuity.

Is it normal for a lithium battery to not charge beyond 60%? And do I need a specific rectifier on these old bikes to charge a lithium battery?

>how hard would you say it was to actually find one that ran well?

Easy if you study how to inspect motorbikes. Study is fun so there's no reason not to study long and thoroughly get what YOU want.

How to inspect them in depth isn't worth addressing in threads which last mere days. Best examine fora and videos for the details because 4chan is inherently limiting.

GS series Suzukis like OPs pic are solid, reliable machines and easy to work on. My 1981 GS750E only cost $500 because the owner was sure it had top end problems. I knew better, cleaned the carbs, and put ~30,000 miles on it with never opening the engine other than one valve clearance check.

While chasing performance stats is fun, so is spending next to nothing on decently reliable vehicles then enjoying the money you didn't squander for example on tools which serve you for life and save shitloads of money as labor costs continue to rise. When you do your own work labor inflation becomes irrelevant. Buy tools before toys and toys will follow.

Forums are easily the best resources for tech info but other social media are not intended for intelligent adult technical conversations which require moderation to shut down and exclude idiots. gsresources covers the GS world nicely.

I don't look for bikes that necessarily "run well", I look for garage sitters I can easily get running well by cleaning the carbs and fuel system (which costs next to nothing if you do it so I did). I bring a compression tester, spark plug socket, and either a jump pack or jumper cables (never jump from a running vehicle) so I can perform a COLD compression test.

I make sure I know at least as much about any vehicle I buy than the person selling it. That's easy since anyone here can use the time they otherwise piss away on the internet to learn about motorbikes instead. Choose to do it then execute.

Shit quality metal, sadly.

That much damage merits complete engine teardown, cleaning and likely overhaul. (You know that but other Anons might not.)

Not hatin' but oddball elderly machines (of which I own several) are best relegated to Sunday rides. They're fun artifacts worth preserving, I discourage those not already skilled mechanics to ignore them and save their wallets.

The only great older machines in reliability terms are BMW airheads.

I'm gonna go look at it this week but I'm a little iffy. Guy says that since it broke off at ~7k miles he's since put 2k more on the bike. I know I can put a trailtech cluster on it and call it a day but this tells me he doesn't really take care of the thing if he's had it for a few years and never bothered to fix what I'd consider a pretty important part of the bike. What say you /dbt/, I'm considering offering 2500 for it as long as everything else on the bike is good to go and it has a clean title.

Charging system testing with a voltmeter as you just did will confirm charge by the voltage jump between resting battery voltage and running charging system voltage.

>I thought this meant that the stator was grounding out

Never guess, ask in advance of taking action and use service manual (factory preferred) troubleshooting instructions. For example if you disconnect all external wiring from a stator and the windings remain grounded, the stator is fucked.

https://en.yamaha-club.eu/model/yamaha-xv-750-50

Virago forums are your best bet. Someone else has had such problems and solved them.

Rectifier/regulators (they perform both functions) need only be as or more capable than stock. Your charging system is three phase and those on Viragos are pretty reliable. So is the rest of the drivetrain except for some starter and ring gear issues.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=393yL3BIaDU

Any rectifier rated stock or higher with the same wiring for three phase will do. Yours should be fine since your system puts out 14V.

What indication are you using to determine state of charge (which is not normally expressed in percent but in resting voltage). ?

The battery maker should have a tech support site and can tell you how to load test your battery. I buy my own load testers because they're cheap and crude, basically resistance wire, a switch and a meter.

If battery doesn't fully charge after running the engine (can be done without riding if you have place a strong fan like a bounce house or carpet dryer fan to blow on both cylinders) then I'd throw it in a riding mower or whatever.

Instead of buying batteries for project bikes I use Clore JNC 660 jump packs but a spare battery with added leads is effectively the same thing so if it starts the bike I'd keep it but replace with a fresh battery to avoid overloading the bike charging system.

A charging idiot light and oil pressure light are ample, speedometers are just legal advice, and tachometers are just entertainment.

I would bring a compression tester and do a cold compression test and of course inspect the spark plug. After cold compression test I'd start it and note results.

Then want something different. Looks should be secondary to reliability, a large established aftermarket (which enhances maintainability and ease of upgrades) and reasonable insurance rates.

It's not as if you know what you're doing since you're still learning, and spending too much on a new machine before you know by experience what you will prefer is dangerous to your wallet. Take your time and learn before spending your hard earnt loot..

A "new" motorbike becomes "used" when the MSO is turned in for a title, and buying used avoids dealer ripoffs like "doc fees". Charged for running the MSO etc to DMV, they rose as a way to fuck salesdroids out of commissions. Americans barely ride their motorbikes so used ones with decades of life are common.

400cc are common because smaller machines are underpowered on the street and 400cc is light enough for anyone so that displacement has been popular with yung riders for a very long time (in nations where adults can buy any displacement they prefer).

Wise first move is buy used after sufficient research. Do your own wrenching which on bikes is both easy and saves more than enough money to be worth it while conveying an understanding of vehicles one gets no other way. Most people don't understand the economic and personal control advantages of independence.
