Lupo 3L or 1.4 TDI? On one hand I would like good fuel economy but I also want a proper manual, but the 1.4 TDI doesn't have as good fuel economy. How cheap is it to convert a 3L to a proper manual gear?

if you're quite broke and want a manuel the only options you have are older cars which have worse fuel consumption. newer cars that have either the same or even slightly worse fuel consumption are all autos. converting a 3L to manual is possible but you need to know what you're doing. if i were you i'd get the 1.4 TDI and tell my inner kike to shut his face

You live in Europe. Take the bus if you don't wanna spend money on fuel. If you really wanna drive something inexpensive, an old motorcycle will do.

The 3l model has a bunch of bespoke-parts (good luck getting spares!), absolutely shit performace and dangerous handling characteristics if you run the low-friction tires. Without those, the fuel consumption will be marginally better than the 1.4 at best.
Just get the 1.4, it's really cheap enough. Probably easier to find one that isn't completely rundown as well.
In any country you could get those, just throwing a non-original tranny in there is going to make the safety-inspection people seethe (and take your car off the road in the progress) unless you can get them a full-fledged engineering study on why it's safe, durable and emission-positive. Just don't.

Lupo and the like are good town cars but a pita on long journeys. If you need to move distances then a cheap Golf or larger car would make your life easier.
I'm assuming you're a no car so start small and trade up if you feel the need.

I have the 1.4TDI PD and it's a decent engine for a first car. No issues in the 5 or so years I've owned it. My right foot is made of lead and I get 5.5l/100km, a more grannyesque driving style can get you as low as 3.5l in my experience.
