I don't think there's a sect of bike or brand that I truly do not like except for maybe third worlder bikes, but I know they would still be fun to ride if that's what I had. I even like Royal Enfields. If you're into American pushrod V8s, you'll be right at home with Harleys. It's a no brainer if you're the kind to want to hotrod your bike.

If you've been wondering why your Azon packages have all been paper and not Styrofoam it's for the same reason your helmet doesn't expire. The Styrofoam inside *never* degrades. Not even in landfills, over centuries. Our local city trash agency has banned it from our trash cans (but suspended the ban because we have no where else to trash it) because they don't want it in their landfills. Stuff is permanent.

what's funny is bicycle helmets actually should "expire" faster because the eps foam is in direct contact with a lot more sweat and direct sunlight. yet somehow a 26 year old helmet showed barely any sign of deterioration in their test.
The 5 year rule came from snell testing motocop helmets and showed that the comfort liner has worn out after 5 years so they suggested replacing them. snell's official stance is that it's just a recommended age, and you should replace you helmet with your own judgement.

arai just decided to pull a number out of their ass so they could get people willing to spend $1000 on a helmet to keep doing so every couple years, because "how much is your life worth??"

Well it’s just that everything you said was wrong. Let’s provide some illustrative examples.
We enter the Harley lineup at $10,000 for the Nightster 975, making 91 horses and 72 foot pounds of torque at 481 pounds, fully operational.
Let’s go up in price, $11,000 for the Triumph T100. That will get you 64 horsepower and 59 foot pounds of torque at 503 pounds running weight.
How about a discount option? The Honda Shadow Phantom comes in at $8,700, and its discounted price comes with discounted performance: 40 horses and 40 foot pounds of torque at a yet portlier 543 pounds.
Hmm, well what about its American competitor? The Indian Scout Sixty at the same price has 85 horses and 65 foot pounds of torque at 551 pounds.
On the other hand, the scout 101 claims 105 horses and 82 foot pounds of torque, finally outdoing the nightster, although weighing in at 555 pounds and upping the price 40% to $14,000. I could talk about the sportster here, but I’ll leave it to you.
So far things are looking very good for Harley, just on paper. Let’s cross the other ocean and check in on the Italians. You could hop on a V7 Stone for $9,700. That bike would have 67 horses and 58 foot pounds of torque pushing a weight of 480 pounds. Finally a comparable bike weight wise, but down 25 horses.
When you look at the market and consider bikes in their own segment, this is how it usually looks. Harley’s are priced competitively, they perform exceptionally, and they look and sound very good while doing it.

W800? 10.4k, 47hp, 44ftlb, 498lb

BMW R12? 14.5K, 95hp, 81ftlb 500lb. 45% more cost to just barely outdo the nightster on performance.
Of course this is all spec sheet bench racing, but if you have some other evidence I could share with you on the internet that would possibly be convincing I’d be glad to. Otherwise, go ride one at your local dealer and you’ll see with your eyeballs and your ass that I’m right.

You think I wanted to hate Harley? Harley hated me first. I gotta feel bad that if I don't buy their product that I am not a real American. Movies told me i had to be a "biker" to ride their bike. I grew up just south of Milwaukee brev. I've ridden Harleys and Buells powered by their motors. I had a friend who tried to flex on me with his new 1200 sportster because I only had a 1000. He actually thought because he had 200 more cc's that he had a better bike. So we went out into the county and swapped bikes and I let him ride my literbike. I beat his sportster like it owed me money and it was slow with wooden brakes and shit suspension. He got off my bike and was legitimately terrified. I just laughed. I warned him. He didnt believe me until he felt it for himself.
At work there is a new kid who just started. Young guy who owns an 883 sportster...used to be his grandfathers. After plenty of motorcycle conversations I convinced him ride his other friends z500 if he got the opportunity. Well he did finally. Now he wants to sell the 883 and get a jap bike. And who could blame him?

Shadow: 2 pots in the front, 1 in the back. They don’t advertise who, so I can only assume nissin.

It’s the same or better set up as all the comparable bikes. Is the v7 a shit bike? Is the t100 a shit bike? The w800? The shadow? If you think the Harley engine sucks, you are committed to saying those engines suck. If you think the Harley brake setup or suspension set up sucks, you are committed to saying those brakes and those setups suck.
But no one’s saying that. What they say is those are the bikes that you should get instead of a Harley. Why? Because they’re stuck in the past.

And I agree, for the record. When the entry level Harley was an 883 evo sporty it was not a good buy. But now the entry level Harley is a nightster with modern components across the board and a competitive price in segment, the most extensive dealer and aftermarket network in america, and an extremely sweet 975 engine.

This leads into a whole class of bike that Harley has lead the way on for a long time. Old tech or woefully underperforming bikes are actually virtuous...hell you'll pay more for them if they are made in Milwaukee. I never argued that other manufacturers haven't also made underwhelming bikes because of course they have.

Underperformance for inflated price is not now nor has it ever been a virtue. Harley used to make competitive bikes tech wise. granted it was a long long time ago but as all the other manufacturers passed them by they adopted the angle of, "classic" and virtue and exclusivity while looking down on others for riding other options. Marketing. Marketing. Marketing. They became an IMAGE company that happened to sell motorcycles not a motorcycle company. Better buy their overpriced gear too! And stop at every dealership and get a t-shirt so you can flex how cool you are! Shit you are cooler than that unamerican guy down the road riding his Honda...shit you are a real BIKER™

Harley desperately needs to reinvent themselves because they are a victim of their own propaganda. They have systematically alienated huge numbers of motorcycle riders and it is now dawning on them that might have been a mistake.

Gee ya think? Right right I forgot it's ME living in the past right? This is on ME not them or their actions. got it.

What about the whole concept of a bike that could legitimately compete with the likes of Ducati? Or the japs? Why did Honda make the RC-51 SP1-SP2? Or Suzuki make the tiller 1000?

EBR tried. I give him credit for that. What happened when BMW decided to make a literbike? The S1000RR is a beast that took huge marketshare in the class from the jap boys. Why? Because they came in with a game plan and evolved the bike. Their efforts have payed off. Harley take note. You could have done this. You maybe still can. Is your newer bikes a step in the right direction? Sure. But if you want euro and jap riders to take you serious you have a LOT of work to do. First and foremost would be an extended ad campaign apologizing to those you alienated.

Hi /dbt/ I was preparing to do a boring "should I get my license" post like you probably see a couple here and there but I think I got my answer,
>built a motorised bike with those 2-stroke kit and been having fun for a couple of months
>today try to let a car pass in tight vineyard roads by getting on the grass
>didn't see the small gravel bank between the road and the grass, road tire immediatly kicked out from under me
>roll in the grass, break one of the bottles I was carrying, car stops to ask of everything is alright only some skin damage is felt in the moment
right now more than 12h later my toe is slightly swollen and my wrist hurts on the edge of the range but I'm mainly looking forward to start fixing/upgrading that vineyard racer and I don't feel scared to get on it again
so I am gonna go for the license when I can

So instead I want to ask : are actual bike better at handling this situation or is this something I need to look out for on every 2 wheel ride ?

Yes and it's why they're relatively cheap, they're not exactly fast but the big engine ones can be quick too, is a lot of weight to handle for an old man which leads them to sell it for cheap. There's an appeal to low rpm torque delivery riding around stop and go traffic, my boomer croozer has peak torque at 2700rpm and a lowered gear ratio, it's not a highway bike but it's crazy at city speeds

not a new bike. i talked to a mechanic friend of mine who does a lot of enduro riding and he says its normal, but i dont agree
the shavings are aluminum (i think) because htey arent on the plug, the plug looks good.
so it might be some aluminum shavings from the camchain due to it not being tensioned correctly and it busting against the block.

i changed the oil and when im at home ill clean out the camchain tensioner, should fix it RIGHT UP

I'm in the US, we do not have the hornet 750 yet. I got my bike from a multibrand dealer chain(ridenow) not knowing about the issues but they are the closest place to me and I only left it with them cause I lowsided on wet while trying to go there to get my tires replaced. In hindsight I never should have gotten insurance involved or left the bike there because only the exhaust, frame slider, brake levers, and mirror broke. It has been more than a month since they called me that they have ordered parts.

I recently cross-shopped these, sportster s, scout 101, chief RT, and low rider s.

I ultimately went with the low rider s (absolutely love it, luv me hog, gobbless) but I think the problem w/ the FTR1200 is it's too far from what most people buy harley / indians for (simpler, more 'old school' cruiser) which is why they never sold that well and were ultimately discontinued. I kind of felt the same about the scout 101 and sportster S - the more balanced, higher-revving water cooled vtwin felt too much like my XSR900 across the board so why would I ever get that over an inline 3 or inline 4? I especially wouldn't get it in addition to one.

In turn, the sportster S felt different enough from my other motorcycles to be worth it for a little different experience and use case. The new 2025 low rider S also has some pretty decent performance straight from the factory.

Pic isn't my low rider but one I saved because I think I want to get the same memphis shades fairing and baja lights.

You can do 6 hours of highway on a 400, it's not a 125cc It has enough Power to keep highway Speed all day, the limiting factor Is the rider.
If a scrawny Little manlet like me did 10h of highway on a 350cc sumo under the Rain i'm sure a big manly man can do It too if he needs It to reach a TOURING destination and like me do his full day of actual fun riding the day After
