Yeah it ran 28 years ago and it's sat on my drive ever since and takes at least -$10k from my neighbours property price.

Yeah it was a lovely car but parts were not easy to get. I didn't like the rear wheel steering, I'd always driven rwd and I instinctively felt like I needed to countersteer to catch it which ruined the driving experience.

They're not that bad. I hated working on my buddies Z32 way more.

I've owned 1st and 2nd gen 3000GTs since 2003, though I prefer 2nd gen.

Anywhere you look you'll find a distinction between 1st and 2nd gen. 2nd gen VR4s got a 6 speed getrag tranny (vs 5 speed in 91-93), better transfer case, stronger engine internals, larger brakes, different body panels, passenger airbag, OBD2, and more. Non-turbo models have fewer differences.

Not true, early 1gs had cast cranks which 93 onwards had Forged cranks. 4 bolt mains vs the initial 2 bolt.

There are inherit pros and cons for the 5spd vs 6spd and it's drive train components.
5 speeds have stronger bell housings, however the transfer assembly is cast aluminum. 6 speeds have steel transfer assemblies however their 2nd gear tends to be be finicky without bellhouse brace tacked in it.

Ideal model in 1gs is a 1993 twin turbo with a 5 speed and then invest in a billet transfer assembly if you want to remedy the Achilles heel of the car.

They also recieved different sound systems and head units along side OBD2 update.

Still the same body, still the same platform, still the same generation. All of those changes you've listed have occurred in other cars mid-model year. Just because it's updated, even if the update is desirable, does not mean it's a new generation.

I don't want a mk4 supra either. I think they're one of the single most overrated cars of all time, especially compared to the rest of the jdm golden era offerings. Next to no racing heritage and mediocre styling, with its only real claim to fame being a shit hollywood movie and an engine that was found in other toyotas.

It's series, not generation. They engine may have different generations but the car remains the same series until a generation change, in which case the chassis model number also changes.

The truth about these cars lies somewhere in the middle. They aren't all eternal inoperable project cars with infinite issues, but they also aren't that good either. If you want one the real winning strategy is to pay maybe 3-5k for one that runs and drives and keep it as a sort of cool secondary backup car. Then sell after a year or two and pursue other cars. They aren't really the best "main" car for someone, both in use and in passion.
