How honest are you guys when selling a used car? I just had a potential buyer and could have made 30 grand.
>Nothing wrong with the car runs flawlessly
>But transmission sump has a very very tiny leak - needs to be resealed - you can have the car in the garage for weeks and you'll only see oil on the bolts and not the floor

I may have lost out on a buy, but as least my conscience is clear. I just can't sell it without having people aware with any issues with my car. I feel bad no matter how small.
I'd want to k ow the same if I was buying a car.

If the someone wouldn't buy your car because of a super tiny transmission pan leak, They weren't gonna buy the car anyways.

But I do believe that honesty is the best policy in life.
You'll find you can create quite a bit of trust with people by simply not lying.
Of course you don't have to be autistic about it

Feign negligence? That’s what dealerships do. It’s up to the buyer to find issues. At least you could say he has to agree to buy it as is with a no return policy.

Like wise.
I have a binder with the service records, parts I've replaced, receipts for the warranty on the parts.

If it has dents or defects I'll point them out in photos on the ad, if there's rust I'll take photos of that and put it in the ad. If it has any issues at all I note it in the write up, and again in person.

I price them fairly, and I usually have a buyer at asking price in a week or so. I'm not super concerned about profit so long as I don't lose money.

Because it sort of isn't? It's more than likely just a loose bolt or somebody didn't clean the mating surfaces good enough. Both are generally easy fixes. If it's leaking because the case has a crack in it then that's a different story. If the fix involves dropping the engine or taking the cab off and it's a minor leak that's still not the end of the world. Just keep your eye on the fluid levels and think it as self cleaning fluid that also rust proofs the underbody of your vehicle.

Depends on who I'm selling to. If it's someone who's polite and reasonable, then I'll list everything wrong, including the shit I could've hid. If it's some shitskin or eastern euro gypsy, then I'll hide as much as I possibly can and sing the car's praises.

100% honest if it's a civilized white guy. If it's an impolite white guy, I usually just try to get him to leave without selling to him, to avoid trouble. If I hear an accent on the phone, I hang up immediately so no need to hide anything in that case.

Too honest for my own good.

Some anecdotes below.

>Selling a 2002 Kawasaki KLR650
>10k miles, know the valves have never been adjusted, it's at the absolute bottom end of spec, but it runs fine and has no valvetrain noise, runs great and no issues
>Tired of it, not what I'm looking for, post it up for sale
>Guy contact me, super excited to see it
>Agree to meet half way (2 hour drive for both of us)
>He test rides it, loves it
>Tell him the valves haven't been adjusted and it should be done, no other issues
>Doesn't care, pays full asking price
>A month later he calls me up and says the engine is knocking bad, and I sold him a lemon, and it's because I knew "the valves were bad."
>Threatens legal action, but nothing ever came of it
>Still wonder to this day what happened to that engine

>Buying a 2003 Subaru Forester, 212k miles for girlfriend
>Son graduated college and moved away for work, dad selling it
>Dad says he doesn't have any paperwork for it, said it's had head gaskets done and timing belt done, but he didn't remember when but "recently"
>Test drive it, it's solid as a rock, interior immaculate, okay let's make a deal
>Tell him without paperwork, I want to offset the cost of a timing belt from his asking price
>"No, it was done recently, you won't ever have to do it again, just ask the dealership I did it at"
>Settle on $300 off the asking price (paid $2500)
>Once title was in hand, contact the dealer
>"Oh yeah, he was asking for a quote a month ago to do the timing belt. It's got 110k miles and 10 years on it and past-due to change."
>Fuck you dad

>Buying a 1986 Chevy K20 pickup
>Guy has it priced like $2k below asking price in my area (asking $3500, and it's immaculate)
>Meet, test drive it, it's great
>Talk him down another $300, he's visibly not pleased about it and points out all the work he's done on it, but accepts
>I still feel bad for talking him down more

Dumb shits like this think "but I'll get more money if I lie!" and don't put a single conscious thought beyond that.
Fuck the rational thought, that has occurred to every human being who sat for 2 seconds for the entirety of existence, "but if everyone does what I'm doing then I'll never be able to buy a car that isn't a lying stinking pile of fucking hot steaming shit!".
Sometimes I'm okay with The Egg thought experiment being a real possibility because it means these fuck faces have to live the lives of every person they've fucked over.

I have had nothing but good experiences buying used cars and so I am compelled to be honest with those kinds of experiences. On the selling side of it I have never had anyone try to more than cursory negotiations since I price things to sell and have upfront descriptions of the vehicle, service records, etc etc.

I have a friend who got absolutely ass fucked buying an older Integra from some middle eastern shit heads with a garage. Car was good looking on the surface level parts you can readily inspect and held together with chewing gum everywhere else, had no end of issues. Same friend now tries to ass fuck everyone he deals with when it comes to cars because he thinks it's just part of the process. Clutch linkage falling apart and held together with epoxy? Fuck 'em if they don't want to check for that. Stacks of washers used as wheel spacers causing two of the studs to spin when you try to remove them? I know what I got, no tire kickers.

I think you only have to get really burned once on a deal to turn into someone like that. I personally haven't sold a car to a person that came across as an asshole either so that may be part of it. It's hard for me to size up a friendly stranger and say "yeah i dont give a fuck if they get stranded somewhere because i didn't disclose a minor problem that turns major without service" but that is just me

ngmi faggot OP. I do it the nigger/chink way- I would openly show the car to the buyer as much as they want. If they miss a detail, that is on them and not my problem. They will sign a binding agreement when they receive the vehicle.

The previous owners were all pieces of shit and the list of problems that I know of is so big that it'll basically be impossible to sell the car if I'm 100% honest about it to a buyer.

An easy fix for somebody who's mechanically inclined pretty much means an expensive trip to the mechanics for a mechanically retarded person. A $1k mechanic bill doesn't raise the value of the car $1k.

Forget about disclosing issues that they wouldn't have noticed. I would go out of my way to defraud a buyer. I would put grease in the oil to hide a knock 5 minutes before selling the car to a single mother. I would use expending foam and spray paint to resculpt the rocker panels that dissolved away from rust. Clear all the codes right before selling the car, etc. If you're not doing this you're an idiot

I am 100% autistically up front about everything and price below market floor. I go so into detail I will explain a specific interior rattle, exactly how many miles the brake pads have, how the transmission should be treated to expect a couple or few more years, and when the sparkplugs are going to shit out of exhaust.
My moral standard is to make life better, not extract maximum profit and handwaive it away with capitalist brainwashing dogma.

I do not, though, entertain even-lower ballers, the desperate, obvious wastrels and addicts, single mothers who attempt to get something for free, and especially not a skeevy cunt who sees a cheap sale as a flipper's paycheck.
If you see a car described as-is, in working order, and significantly cheaper than almost anything else take it for what it is and be happy, because what we've just done is help keep the entire market price lower which also effects inflations and government tax revenues, which in my philosophy should always be zero.

I've learned over time to not be so stupidly up front. For example
>Selling bike
>Get a guy interested in it immediately
>He meets me, test rides it
>Only reservation is the milage. It's higher than most on the market but still low for the bike (people barely ride bikes so lots of low km examples, priced accordingly)
>I tell him that a couple of times I've had false neutrals but it's just a Honda thing
>He gets scared and buys a different bike
Absolutely nothing wrong with the bike, I should have kept the false neutral to myself.
I recently sold a different bike that will consume oil if ran hard, but they all do. Didn't mention it because that's just how they are, the buyer should research what they're buying.

Oil leak? Stop leak oil. Head gasket leak? Head gasket sealer. Sell the car as being in perfect mechanical condition no leaks or anything. In a year when the engine shits itself and starts leaking everywhere it won't be my problem, it's the risk you assume when buying used.

Lmao. You're right, you're buying one in much worse condition for that price because you bought the shitbox next door that was primed to blow up but the PO hid the issue just long enough to pawn off onto you. I would much rather buy a car from OP, pointing out issues I most likely wouldn't have caught during my inspection, than from boomer who says it's "showroom condition"

A good example is my bike that I tried to sell off because frankly I don't like it that much.
Dude called me about it, mentioned that it was a beautiful bike and offered to trade it straight for a bike that I wanted.
We talked this and that, I mentioned that I put in new rings, gaskets, lifter tappets and seals, but I couldn't trade it to him with good conscience due to the engine having issues and needing to be torn down to replace prematurely worn lifter tappets.
