You couldn't google the current Mercedes models you lazy retard?
Is $1015 too much to replace the two front control arms? At first I thought it was, but after watching the YouTube video it looks like a lot of work. We also got quoted $835 for front sway bar links and bar assembly. that one I know is way, way too much. This mechanic just charged us $960 to reprogram throttle body adaptation, replaced rear latch assembly, and leak detection pump after evap bullshit which I thought was a great price considering how much fucked up shit they fixed. This is for a 2012 Fiat 500 sport that has a trade in value of $500 lol. The intrinsic value is way higher though, you guys probably know what I mean: it's a street legal car ffs. Barely over 100k miles.

could be that, could be the brake piston getting stuck after you let off the brakes, could be a bunch of different things. If something is sticking driving hitting the brakes hard rto drop 5-10 mph then seeing if it pulls to that side will give the answer.

diagram is showing spots along the side trim for jacking, the jack points are just for a full front or back lift, you can always jack along the normal roadside points to get it in the air and put a jackstand under. or drive her up on ramps, 50$ buys a pair of cheapos from harbor freight, then use the central jack points from there.

No. The difference isn't big enough to worry about, but make the change as gradually as possible/reasonable to preserve some velocity. The cat is going to slow the flow substantially, before we even talk about the size change, which means a big increase in static pressure at the cat. Do a good job and you won't have any problems

My car is similar.
The easiest way I've found to get all four wheels off the ground is to back up onto some ramps, then slide my jack in behind the front tire (picrel), lift the front end onto jack stands placed at the pinch welds or near the control arms depending on what I need to do.
Then you can lift the rear off the ramps and put it on stands as well if you need to mess around back there too.

Might as well repost my old issue since I was in the middle of it when we hit bump limit.
>My 08 Towncar's battery died today at the grocery store under strange circumstances. I'd charged up the battery at home with my battery tender the night before. At home the car started up fine. I go in and shop for an hour and I come out and it won't start. Put my battery jumper on it and it starts right up, first crank no problem.
>Is this a shitty battery? or is it something else?
>If it was the starter I wouldn't think that my battery jumper would get it to start and I don't see how the alternator would be the issue since the car was off. Should I just throw down for a new battery, its the one that came with the car when I bought it and I have no clue how old it is.
To which an anon asked me.
>when the battery was dead was it cranking just very slow, just clicking, or doing nothing at all?
To whit I replied.
>just clicking
>Starter fires, engine does nothing. If I jump it then it fires right up and keeps charge while the engine runs.
So my impression is that if its an alternator issue then it would still be losing power with the engine running since it wouldn't be converting engine power into electricity. And if it was a starter issue then it wouldn't start at all. Which makes me think its the battery going to shit. That said the car refusing to start after a brief 1 hour sit in the grocery store parking lot still confuses the hell out of me.
Am I mistaken?

A drive down to the store shouldn't drain a good battery even if the alternator isn't charging it. You should get many starts out of it.
So your battery is just a dud. It will hold a charge for a few minutes off the charger but it ain't holding much of a charge and it is self-discharging.
You need a new battery.

I could totally commute on it even though most of the roads around me are 55mph county highways. It's honestly not a bad option if you're tight on money especially if you don't get cold winters. With a 4 mile commute you wouldn't even have to charge it but maybe once every two weeks so it's cheap as hell to run. If you'd rather have a car do that though there's obviously many more benefits

I figure this may be the best place to ask, so here goes. I bought picrel recently and was doing some research on wheel dimensions. I want to throw a set of RS Watanabes, but I'm not too sure of size that will fit. I'd like a set of classic 8 spokes. Google shows the offset is 45 mm for both an NA Miata and my car. Though the bolt pattern is slightly different. My factory tire size is a 155/80R13 with a 5 or 5.5 inch wide wheel, factory. Watanabes start at either 8 or 8.5 inch width, depending on rim. I'd like to keep the factory offset. These are seemingly popular on Miata's, so I thought I'd ask if anyone thinks or knows these will clear on my car being similar era and size.
>van has painted alloy wheels
>paint is peeling and looks like shit
>want a quick cheap fix

Thoughts on stripping them with brake fluid and then spray painting? Apparently brake fluid is good for stripping, less toxic than the real stuff, doesn't eat tires as fast, plus I already have some.

I just had snow tires balanced and mounted on my steelies today, and noticed that the car now pulls a little to the right, not a whole lot but I'm annoyed considering the car didn't feel out of alignment beforehand.
How common is this with small tire shops like the one I went to? What could the tech possibly have done to mess with the steering geometry when taking off then putting on the wheels? Also they charged $80 cash, is that about standard?

Alright anons I am planning to hammer out wheel bearing races in the city. I can either do it in my apt parking garage for 10 cars with decent privacy (someone may complain about the hammering), out on the curb in the hood, at an autozone, or pay $200 to rent an actual garage bay. What would you choose? I'm probably gonna do it in the garage but worried I might regret it. I guess I could leave the car on jackstands in the garage and take the hub to a shop if all goes south. Thanks.

Sometimes you can look up recommended maintenance items for your specific car, rarely there are intervals e.g. for timing belts.
Some parts look bad (coolant hoses cracking, plastic pressurized radiator tanks turning brown)
Some parts sound bad (belts squealing with worn tensioner, CV joints going wub-wub-wub, wheel bearings sqeauling, pinion bearings whining
Some parts feel bad (loose or worn out suspension links, tie rod ends).
Diagnosis requires intuition and investigation.
Sometimes I just like to get a car in the air so I can look at all the suspension rubber and etc. underneath.

Did my father get scammed?
He has an old Honda, key won't turn in the ignition, my guess is a stuck wafer. Ten minute fix but I wouldn't be able to visit him to fix it myself until next week.
He ended up calling a mechanic that installed a new key cylinder and now he has two keys, one for the ignition and one for the door. Got charged $400. The cylinder alone is $250 online so I'm guessing the guy charged him $150 for the new key + service. Is that how much it goes for nowadays?

Found a pretty rare 6 speed extended cab 2015 Colorado here, for 13,800 CAD which is I don't know 10k USD. It's got 196k km (120k miles), is this kind of mileage concerning for a truck? I have only ever bought one car before, a 2007 mazda3 with a 5 speed and that was 10 years ago my first car it had basically the same miles as this one 191k km and It has 400k now and it's time is almost up. But for trucks, especially Amerishart brand ones should I be concerned with 196k km/120k miles? The truck is from out west in Canada so it has no rust, and is being sold in Ontario now. The price seems pretty good, and the manuals are really rare. I just don't want to buy a heap that needs a bunch of work soon. It's got all new pads/rotors, new tires and winter tires seems like a steal of a deal.

I just got back from test driving it and man was it awkward as fuck. Completely different than my mazda, I mean that's a given it's a light truck or whatever but I didn't think it would be that different. The transmission felt so loose, the throw between gears was crazy, 1st and 2nd gear were totally useless and it was just so awkward, it had a pedal parking brake so you have 4 pedals in the wheel well and no dead pedal to rest your foot on comfortably. The clutch felt weird as fuck, I don't know if it was like just worn out and had a high throw but I couldn't feel anything from the pedal at all and embarrassingly stalled it twice turning left at an intersection. The bite just seemed high and their was zero feedback from the pedal or engine or drivetrain. My shitty fucking 20 year old mazda felt miles better to drive, and there wasn't anything wrong with the truck it rode fine it was just super awkward I don't know. Maybe manual trucks are just like that, but I just did not like driving it. I am sure I would get use to it, it's a good price...it has all new brakes, tires and even comes with winters. The truck is from out west so no rust.

I’ve never driven a modern manual (non-semi) truck, but having huge throws sounds right for a truck, and when they wear out it’s terrible. I drove a friend’s F-100 he picked up after he DUI’d his nice truck and it was an absolute guessing game where any of the gears was.
A manual truck isn’t the performance option, it’s the poorfag option. It may have some advantages but being nice to drive isn’t one of them.

So I did a bunch of research last night, and one thing I did find is apparently these trucks have what's called CAGS (Computer-Aided Gear Selection) Where in certain scenarios the trucks ECU will literally FORCE you to not be able to shift into 2nd or third what a fucking stupid system. I think this is maybe what was happening, but i don't know for sure as I never even looked at the dash that much driving the thin, I don't know if I saw the thing pop up as it comes up on the screen on the dash telling you to shift to 4th gear. I know I kept seeing a number 4 on the dash kinda where in an automatic it would tell you if you were in D or P etc and I only ever got the thing into 3rd gear and went into 4th gear once. I kept thinking it was just telling me what gear I was in, but I was never in that gear when I driving. Maybe that's why it felt so awful shifting sometimes, maybe it was this dumb as fuck lockout preventing me from shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear sometimes.
I don't know, probably just coping for stalling the thing and not driving it that well but still this system seems really fucking stupid, if I wanted a computer to tell me to shift or rather make me I would buy an automatic. This system seems dangerous as fuck, turning left in an intersection and you try to give it so you can turn and the computer tells you shift fucking denied shift to 4th so you have zero power?

CV axle repair would save a bit of time as to replace the differential you would have to unbolt the inner joint from the diff anyway. depending on how long the boots have been leaking, it may make sense to replace the entire joint or the entire axle if dirt and moisture contamination has caused damage.

no, since there are no clutches to wear in a manual transmission, the only debris you can really end up with are steel shavings ground off the gears, not sludge like with an auto.
there is typically a magnet buried inside the transmission that the case has to be split to clean, but if you get so much metal on it that it needs cleaning, your transmission is basically toast anyway.
Why can't (or shouldn't) you put a limited slip differential in a car (1990's era) that has anti-lock brakes?
I have yet to see a clear answer on this.

the answer to this question depends on how many wheels ABS is able to independently control.
lets also assume that when the LSD is locked or coupled, that both wheels on that axle will turn the same speed. let’s also assume the axle will lock semi-randomly for this thought exercise, though you can study LSD dynamics to know it will only lock in certain instances
first let’s consider an axle where you have an LSD, with 2 channel ABS. if that axle starts to skid, ABS will limit the brake pressure on both wheels, and depending on slip level, may do so independently across each wheel. if the LSD is locked, then both wheels will turn at the same speed, so R/L brake torque distribution is not possible. this could be problematic if one wheel can achieve a higher torque than the other due to weight transfer or the road surface. chances are, your ABS system is calibrated to understand that the axle behaves a certain way, and adding an LSD will break many of those baseline applications.
now lets consider the situation where you have only the axle speed, common in 90s cars. side-to-side regulation is not possible, so you end up at an axle-level slip regulation. at this point you’re indifferent to the LSD state, because you’re not controlling to the wheel level anymore, so whether the axle is locked or not doesn’t really matter.
you can get very into the weeds on reference speed calculation in both cases, as the locked axle will always appear to be spinning more slowly than the unlocked axle. so your reference can actually undershoot the true body speed (corruption)
I think the short answer is, unless your vehicle was manufactured with an ABS/LSD variant, the calibrations will be wrong, and you probably have to choose one or the other. That’s not to say you couldn’t, but the ABS behavior could end up being worse than stock.

Do not do this. It's probably the original fluid in the transmission and all the particulate in the fluid is acting as a friction modifier and it's the only reason it moves at all. I've seen it dozens of times - if you put fresh fluid in it it won't move afterwards. You either run it as is until it won't move anymore and rebuild the transmission then, or you rebuild the transmission now. That's your only options.

Give it to me straight how bad a RWD truck will be in winter? Specifically the 2015 Chevy Colorado, I live in Toronto in Canada and never really drive rural and things like that plus the winters are getting more mild here but still it can be slushy and slippery. Obviously this is with winter tires, I am coming from a 20 year old FWD mazda3 with no traction control as well.

you'll want to do some playing fishtailing slow in an open lot. You should be able to drive in a straight line, pass a pole or something, kick out the back end and drift a full 360 around it and go back to the straight line you were driving. If your traction control lets you do that. My 06 4runner absolutely would not allow that kind of fun, there's a wire I have to cut and install a switch on still.

I hear people say that's what to do, I will a lot of the time probably have a decent amount of tools in the back of the truck anyways. plus the roads get plowed pretty good. The truck I plan on buying comes with a set of all seasons and a set of winter tires as well on some cheerful aluminum wheels. I will check how good the winters are, if they are half decent I may spend the money for some Blizzak DMV-2s to put on the rear drive wheels and keep the keep the decent winters on the front to save a few bucks as the Blizzaks are pretty pricey but maybe I will just do all 4 if the winters are not the best that come with it.
>>28700725
Yeah, I have never driven or owned a 2wd vehicle before while I have driven f150s in 2wd mode outside of winter but that hardly counts. I think it would be good to get a feel for fishtailing, how to correct the oversteer etc and a general feel for driving. It's gonna be a standard 6 speed so, that should aid a bit in the control aspect of driving.

doesn't look too bad, just remember the narrower the better for snow tires. I prefer studs myself just for the extra audio feedback when I'm losing traction. I learned snow driving with a 68 malibu with an open diff, which has a little better weight distribution than the colorado but obviously zero traction control. Understeer extra sucks in the winter, I've never run rear snows only, always 4 corners.

But I may still end up putting some nice new really good ones on the rear to just give the truck the best chance it can have but regardless it's going to have winters all around.

Hey /o/, I was attempting to help my friend get his car started and I'm wondering if this terminal is the likely culprit. His car suddenly stopped starting the other day, and when he went to check his battery the positive post was corroded to hell. After cleaning it up, pic related is what it looked like. It's loose but the dome lights came on. Before attempting it earlier, I held the terminal to the post as tight as it could go with a pair of pliers while he turned the key. When we would try to start it, it made a single flubby click from under the battery tray (what would normally be under a battery tray?) and didn't start. Was I retarded to rule out the terminal in this case? Like is it so damaged that even using vice grips to bridge the connection wouldn't work? I checked all the related fuses and relays and they weren't damaged and clicked when the ignition was engaged.

$120k is good but not great for the area. honestly i would suggest relocating. you could try to parlay relocation into a promotion + relocation stipend + house purchase, and probably still be able to afford the 4R. you might not get a raise or have to take a paycut though, but if your COL goes down enough it might still feel like a raise. $120k in metro detroit would put you solidly in the middle class.
Regardless, the 4R will be a good purchase if you use it as a 4WD. It will maintain its value because of the toyota tax, so you’ll always have an offramp to sell it if you decide you dont like it.

my neighbor his being very annoying and I'm about to tell him to fug off. A few months ago I changed the engine coolant temperature sensor on his ~2015 chev suburban. The radiator fans weren't turning off and the gauge was pegged at the low end. It fixed it, now it's doing it again. It stops when I reset the battery and comes back apparently, eventually. I wouldn't think it could be the thermostat since it's throwing code faults and a stuck open thermostat should just be a cooler engine, not something where the fans stay on even after the car turns off the and the temp is pegged at COLD. I'm done doing free labor for this dude but from what I gather, it's probably not the thermostat and the only thing left could be a bad harness connector...harness...or ECU or a ground idk? I've read people changing the tstat, the sensor, the harness pigtail / connector and it still comes back. I'm about to tell him it has 200k miles, what do you expect, take it to the mechanic. usually the IAC will kick up the idle if you let off the clutch slowly, possibly that's malfunctioning or there is a general lack of power from needing a tune up. revving to 2k at startup is a bit high but nothing crazy for a small engine.
do you know anyone at all maybe a coworker or neighbor that can drive a stick that could take you around the block in it and tell you if it feels normal?

You should be able to get it to creep forward with the clutch partially let out but a 2zz has 0 torks so it probably wouldn't like to idle in gear with the clutch fully released.

if your friend drove it back with no problem, i think it's just your technique. just keep at it anon, i've been showing my 15 year old son how to drive a stick and he's still struggling on initial takeoff 4 sessions in.
once you get it, it clicks and it gets a lot easier, like remember when you were learning to ride a bike, you kept falling and then one time it just clicked and you were able to keep it going?
my advice is to rev high and let the clutch out slow at first, resist the urge to dump the clutch once you hit the bite point, that'll give you the inertia and cushion to get going. once you've mastered a basic takeoff you can fine tune your skill with lower rev and faster engagement, but don't worry about that at first.
you can do it anon, i have faith in you

well tied to wheel rotation, my guess would be a pad falling apart and making contact, a warped rotor making contact, a bent dust shield making contact, or a dislodged click or other debris making contact.
tied to steering my guess would be a ball joint, tie rod, or something in the rack itself.

Hmm, well, I noticed the brake rotors had that ridge on the outer edge. I didnt figure that would cause my issue, since it only happens when turning to the one side. Might just do a brake job anyway and see if that fixes it.

I went out again and I am a lot better at not stalling getting into first. The problem is that it takes 3 business days for me to find the clutch engagement point and then slowly give it enough revs to get going. How are you supposed to take off at a reasonable speed without screeching the wheels? I very slowly find where the clutch starts engaging and then rev it to 2k while keeping my clutch pedal in place and thats barely enough to keep the car moving when the revs begin to fall but whenever I try to go a little faster or with higher rpm, I immediately stall out or i end up burning some rubber. Another question I have is it ok to start banging the gears after 1st? I know the 2zzs whole thing is revving and I am shifting at around 4-5k seemingly without issue but I don't want to blow up the clutch more than I already have.

Thoughts?
Why do more cars not use boxer engines? Seems like a really good engine type.

my guess is that the inline 4 is an overall less complicated to produce and cheaper to manufacture for most companies. The only reason porsche and subaru use them is probably due to legacy.

It seems like in the performance car range there would be more attempts at it, though. Boxer-6 seems like an awfully convenient size package while having perfect primary and secodary balance, plus a lower center of gravity. It has advantages in weight distribution and balance, but an online 4 or especially 6 teams to be balanced enough as to not make a difference, and the inline typically will weigh less overall so it's a reasonable trade with a bit more of that weight sitting slightly higher. The big drawback is in cost and maintenance -- two banks of cylinders, two sets of manifold, two head gaskets, and for dohc two sets of camshafts (& related tensioners, sensors, phasers, etc.) also look into bore scoring - residual fuel pooling on the bottom of the cylinder fucking shit up whereas in an upright layout that fuel would drop into the oil pan and not be enough to cause any issues. Was a big problem for Porsche for some years.
I have a 2011 BMW 335i I just bought and am getting body work done on it at the moment. It was running fine when I got it a few weeks ago, but now it won't start. Called to have a battery put in via AAA, and they tested it and said it was fine. Guy claimed it was the starter with sheer confidence. I am not familiar with BMWs and their fearures, but the info center states there is a discharge and would be disconnecting the battery to save it's charge. I took a half assed look and pictured is the starter.
It don't seem like the starter would be the issue, but I dunno. I've had startwrs go out, but they clicked multiple times. This car "clicks" once after priming the fuel pump and does nothing more. I have an N55 under the hood and no check engine or idiot lights. Would the guy be correct in his assertion?

Hey cockfags, do any of you guys know about car audio and can help me out with something? I came across this Quinn Accoustics set in a Bassworx box a while ago:
> Get pic related for free from a friend who got it from a friend who got it from a... (etc)
> Don't give a shit about BIG THUMPIN' BASS (my car rattles enough just from driving it) and I don't know shit about car audio
> Take it to work so a coworker can test it for me in his truck, it seems to work fine
> Leave it in the warehouse for a few days
> Another coworker has asked me about it a couple times
Basically, what's it worth? I get the feeling the other guy wants to buy it but I also get the feeling that he's been hurting for money a bit lately. If I could sell it for $X in general than I'd take that price and knock a huge chunk off and offer it to him at a discount. If its only worth like $50-$100 I'd probably just give it to him though.
All I've been able to find out is that it used to be a store brand for some car stereo website and that it's "entry level". Thank you for any insight you can provide.

You have clutch fear, very normal for a first time driver. You fear the clutch and what it does to the engine when the revs start to drop and it bogs and so you add more throttle everyone does it.
>I am going as slowly as I physically can but maybe im not going slow enough
There is your problem, going too slow and you will just ask the engine to stall especially some little 4 bangers and stuff. My advice would be to go in some parking lot and find whats called the biting point of the clutch. Put your clutch in all the way and slowly let it out, and at some point you will feel the car start to buck down let it out, then do it again, and again. Find that biting point of the clutch is so crucial, it will dictate everything about driving manual. Letting the clutch out too slow and you will stall or stutter and hip and hop forward if you're lucky let it out too quick and you will pop the tires of just do a shit start. Learn that bite point, and just right at that bite point or a little further up the car will very slowly creep forward and when you feel it very slowly creep forward that is when you start adding a tiny bit of throttle. You're not trying to accelerate, you're adding just a bit of throttle like 200-300 revs maybe and that will get you going. Think of it like a teeter totter, too much weight on one side and it becomes unbalanced too much clutch not enough throttle stall or shit start or too much throttle clutch slippage or tire pops. That clutch bite point is also the key to hill starts, when you know where that bite point is you can hold the car ever so momentarily on the clutch bite point as you transfer your foot from the brake to the throttle and you won't slide back. Everything your experiencing is normal, I stalled my way through a major intersection for so long the light went from green to red semi-trucks and shit honking at me stalled at least 5 times with my dad laughing at me in the passenger seat.

My car also reeked of clutch for a day or two after that I just dumped the clutch at like 3k rpm to get out of the intersection. I didn't have many more instances after that, but to give you reference I still drive the same car 10 years later on the same clutch and adding over 180k km to the car on that same clutch. Car has nearly 400k km now, possibly on the original clutch as I bought it at about 190k and it had no reports of a clutch being put in. So there's room for wear and tear with the clutch, unless it was totally dogged by the previous owner. So don't worry too much about those initial couple weeks of getting the hang of the car.

I would never ever buy used tires online, in person only ever. Used tires have kinda become a scam where I am now to be honest, they want like 120 dollars for a used tire you can go buy a brand new one for that price or 20 dollars more sure you might pay a mounting fee but still a brand new tires. I have bought used tires a lot, and honestly sometimes it's okay but at this point I think I would buy new unless it's something I know i'm getting rid of soon.
One major piece of advice though, if you do go to a used tire place you HAVE to ask to see the tires. Go ask to see the tires in your size, they will usually have some racks and look at a few. They might have a couple sets but it's kinda rare to get all 4 of the exact same ones to be honest. Try to pick like a pair of the same tires for say your fronts get a pair and the rears get a pair it's not the end of the world to have two different sets of tires. But regardless, you HAVE to look at the DOT code on the tire it will be 4 digits and tell you when the tire was made. It will look something like 4721. The 47 meaning the 47th week and the 21 being 2021 so the tire was made in the 47th week of 2021. Try to get the newest tires with the best tread you can find. I wouldn't recommend anything older than like 5-6 years honestly. If you don't do any of this, they are just going to put whatever the fuck they want on your car some 10 year old hard a hockey puck all seasons.

practice finding the bite point. sit parked, let out the clutch very very slowly just untl the engine starts to bog a little (but don't let it out enough at it kills it), this is your bite point. once you start bogging the engine push the clutch pedal back in and do it over and over again until you learn the feel of the bite point.
once you have that down practice adding in a little bit of gas. resist the urge to dump the clutch, continue letting it out very slowly even as you add gas. see if you can get the car moving just a little bit, then push the clutch back in so it doesn't stall. keep working at this until you master the feel of the clutch.

I did this early on, then tried to wear my workboots or cowboy boots, and shit was not fun. Even normal tennis shoes that were different than the ones I learned on gave me difficulty.
Does driving at high rpms for long periods of time(highway speeds)cause damage?
Context: my 1.6L shitbox has a rather short geared transmission so when I am going 150km(yes its legal) per hour im at 4k rpms on 6th gear. Redline is 6.5k+.
Also does the engine power/size matter when it comes to a cars maximum speed or is it all about gear ratios?(assuming same redline)

Is it normal to just shift it into neutral and come to a full stop from any gear?
How do I know when to downshift like coming to a corner where I know I wont need to come to a full stop but still need to keep giving it gas

technically you're never supposed to have it in neutral when the car is moving, you can fail a driving test if you do.
practically on a normal stop you let off the gas and start braking, when the slows to the point the rpm drops too low (say around 1200 rpm), you push in the clutch. at this point you can either shift through the gears from highest to first as you're slowing with the clutch pedal engaged, or just say fuck it and slow to a stop in neutral or in high gear with the clutch in, it really doesnt matter to the car

I could put them both on stands. I was just planning to put some shitty tires on them to sit for winter, but will look into it. 1, 1.5, or 2 ton?

I found out earlier that one of my sway bar links shit the bed and that's why I've been hearing noise while turning when stopped/going slow. I also need to get winter tires put on.
Are these both things you should get an alignment after? If so, I'm gonna try to find one shop that can do both together.

for me it was gutroral, primeval roars of frustration and desperation as i tried to get my steering box in place. holy fuck that cunt was heavy. the relief one gets after holding in a gigantic shit for so long doesn't compare to the relief felt once i was able to thread a bolt in
