Why does hiking attract so many trust fund kids? I can't tell you how many people i've met on trails that have told me they have no job and have a trust fund instead. I've never been apart of a hobby that had so many occurrences of this.

Its one of the easiest hobbies to start. Hell, you don't really need expensive gear to start walking from point A to point B, and sometimes point B is less than one mile away.

I was out of work for 3 months due to an injury and decided to start hiking, after a few hikes I went all in and blew so much money on gear, but then I had to return to work and most of the time I'm just too tired to go hiking, I easily have like 10k worth of top of the line mountaineering gear but I'm too autistic to go, if I'm not tired, I'm having an anxiety attack and I can't make myself go alone out of fear of seeing other people, also the fact that the closest thing to a real mountain near me is like 2 hours away and it's only 1.5k feet, fuck my life.

It depends on how far into the hike you are. If it's just a ~5 mile trail it'll be full of crackheads, bored teenagers, and those holistic types that like to eat shrooms in the middle of the woods. But the further in you go, there's definitely a lot of trust fund kiddies, dudes going through a midlife crisis, and occasionally a dude that's been missing for 5 years because he just keeps walking. There are tons of activities that have little to no cost of entry, and ones that require specific expensive equipment usually have a large used market or people that are willing to let you borrow.

If you're actually in a spot where you're waging every week and then either holing up to not spend money or physically recovering over the weekend, then you need to come up with a plan to get out. You might just be depressed man. I do the same shit where I create all these obstacles for myself that don't actually matter and then just end up feeling worse for not going. It helps to just be aware of when you start doing it, like thinking of the drive as an obstacle and then reframe that 2 hours is nothing to drive. Forcing yourself to go can break the cycle. Regardless of how bad I have felt before, I have only felt better for going and worse for not. Even just driving there, deciding you still don't want to hike and driving back will feel better than not going but chances are you probably will want to hike. You mentioned going alone, so I'm assuming you struggle to find partners but for me the stress of letting someone down almost completely overrides anything keeping me from wanting to go.

Anon, I'm a retail assistant manager, I don't get weekends off or two days off in a row. My only solace is the fact I do live in a rural part of town and I personally live in the woods and my neighbors are cool with me hiking on their wooded property too. So I do spend a night and day at least camping, weather permitting.

i can hike forever on my schizobux. I would imagine many are like me, but lie just like i do and say they code or work at their fathers firm and so on. I also don't really give a fuck about what they do. I don't think i've ever asked anyone what they do as i am often far too focused on what i am doing. Anyways a lot from what i overhear also do seasonal work where they'll hike 6 months then work 6 months which seems like a decent idea, hiking can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. I carry a bivy and put my backpack in a trash bag and don't use trekking poles, i meat all sorts of people some carrying 60 pounds with every new gadget and vice versa, just try not to get yourself in sticky situation where you want to look cool so you hangout with them and end up blowing 500 bucks in a day

TF kid and long-distance hiker here. Personally, I'm autistic and can't really function in a normal job, so spending as much time as possible in nature is the move. Funny, I always felt like an outcast even among thru-hikers anyway.

OP's not entirely wrong, there's definitely some of us out there. My take? There's a type of young dude - loner, dropout, no real skills - who just wants to fuck off from society. But they're definitely not the majority of hikers, at least from my experience. The trail attracts all sorts (this is just my random categorization, but you get the picture):
The finance bro doing a 180 career change.
The vanlife couple with two dogs, working sporadically.
The 19yo clearly having a psychotic break.
The 30-something ex-athlete whose promising career ended early due to injury.
Hordes of Boomers in groups enjoying retirement.
That barefoot, possibly homeless philosopher dude (could be 22, could be 53) lost in his own world/concepts.
Plus the more "normal" types: scouts, trail runners, climbers, weekend warriors.
As for why TF kids hike? Honestly, I think there are just a lot of us everywhere now, especially with this economy. Maybe the ones who haven't been completely lobotomized by the internet decide to actually go outside instead.

Hiking allows them to go out after breakfast and build up an appetite for the next lavish meal and all the expensive equipment makes it all so much more comfortable and easy.
