Yellowstone is my favorite place in the world so it's Wyoming for me. The Wind River range is great too, Tetons, Bighorns, Snowy range are cool. Haven't spent much time in the Absarokas, but that's probably the most /out/ place in the lower 48, pure wilderness and grizzly bears.

For me it's Wyoming. It's got a mix of everything. It's like Colorado but without the peak bagging autism, and the ranges have much cooler basin and allies.
I haven't spent any time in Northern Idaho (north of Craters), but I found a lot of Southern Idaho to be very boring save for a few region like Twin Falls with the Gorge and SE Idaho.
Montana was an absolute snorefest for me east of Glacier, probably my fault for going through the northern reservation land rather than going south more. Glaciers and west of that / down through to Yellowstone was great tho.

Ranked from worst to first
>4 Colorado
A non-starter. It’s just so pozzed and faggy. If this were thirty or whatever years ago then sure, but as of today is full of my very least favorite type of outdoors enthusiasts. Denver is disqualifying in and of itself. It’s not bad, but really when factor in everything its like in the same tier as Wisconsin & New Hampshire, that’s how much the people there ruin it.
MASSIVE POWER GAP
>3 Wyoming
This probably will prove controversial, but it’s not meant as a slag. What separates it from ID & MT is its lack of good /out/ towns, basically only Riverton is appealing, and I’m really stretching when I extol the virtues of Riverton WY. Also this is the heartland of the NOLSfag, which is not as bad as the conspicuous consooomer REI Coloradofag…but it’s pretty close. Cheyenne is basically Colorado now too. The weather is genuinely shitty and not in a fun way. Still man, its overall outstanding.
>2 Idaho
It was close. Boise getting some its character back and the exodus of Californians in the last few years is really, really good. It was the first state to hold the line. I’m a bush pilot, and aside from Alaska this is the best bush flying in the entire world. Very close to #1 for me.
>1 Montana
You’re just not beating it. It’s a juggernaut for a reason. Of all the cities in all these states my top five (perhaps even more than that) are all in Montana. There’s no better protected land in the country than the Bob. People sleep on Eastern Montana, but the Missouri breaks are all time spots as well. I just don’t think anywhere can quite beat Montana if I’m being totally honest.

>/out/ towns
oxymoron

anyway I actually like Colorado exactly because it's so "pozzed", I don't know what this word means or if I'm using it correctly, but basically when I'm out in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming I'm constantly wary of meeting faggot ass locals who don't want you there and I'm worried I'll be come back to my car to find it scratched or my tires slashed or something (especially since I have Colorado plates and I heard they don't like that, especially in Wyoming), I also am much more careful about checking maps beforehand for possible private property because I don't want to meet these people at all. And there's still a surprising amount of private property in these places, it's constantly an issue and changing my plans. In Colorado I just find a trailhead and fuck off into the woods, don't even check the parcel maps beforehand, any private property owners probably don't care about hikers, but it's still easy to get away from people just don't do the most popular alltrails
Anyway, I'd still vote for Wyoming because it has the most spectacular places to me. Colorado is a solid second though, very beautiful and surprising diversity for a state usually only known for mountains.

Look, we all have different /out/ priorities, I want to be in the wilderness and not meet faggots like you who will tell me to fuck off back to Colorado. Fortunately it seems your priority is hanging out in towns, so we shouldn't have any issues I guess, only time I ever visit towns is for gas or groceries.

hasn't happened to me personally but I have heard stories. I'm sure it's unlikely but it's something I'm wary of which is annoying. But I wasn't lying about facing issues with private property, much of Wyoming is a patchwork of public and private land. I was just in mostly central Wyoming a couple weeks ago exploring some little known places (to name a few: Fremont Canyon, Granite Mountains, the Eastern Wind River, Clark's Fork Canyon, Devil's Leap, Bighorn Canyon) and had to deal with private property with almost everything I wanted to do, had to abandon a couple plans even.
Anyway, as I said I still really like Wyoming. Montana is cool too. Idaho less so.
including other states Utah, California, Wyoming, Arizona and Colorado are my top 5. Pretty sure Alaska would be top 5 but I've never been

We're already California Lite with Denver becoming a price radiation zone. Almost no one can live and work in the mountains either.

Politics means 2 bedrooms apartments costing $1400 minimum in the shittiest neighborhoods with no in-unit washer and dryer. As opposed to any other of the states where the same price gets you a house rental.

But you did mention your age, so if you're already set up with a house you're good to go and that's not exactly a concern.

Wyoming is mostly flat, empty and ugly, so thats out. There are some nice spots but it's a small percentage of the state.
Colorado has the most infrastructure for outdoors activities and it probably has the most varied nature. It also doesn't have brown bears which is nice. It is, however, crowded in a lot of spots.
Idaho is awesome and has some of the most beautiful places in the US but it's very very rural and not very accessible, at least comparatively.
Montana suffers from the same issue as Wyoming but not nearly as bad. The western half of the state is amazing.

It's really not. I've now been to almost all of wyoming save for around Cody, and down in the SE. Saying it's mostly flat, empty and ugly is just wrong and malicious almost as if you're trying to keep someone out.

Also to say Montana is not as bad as Wyoming is just delusion. Yes the western side is great, but the entire eastern side is a plateau with the only remotely cool thing being around the Missouri break which pales in comparison to what Wyoming has in it's lower elevation spots. The missouri plateau is like an easy 60-70% of Montana's land mass.

Colorado is the shining example of what we must never allow to happen to the other great out states. Californians and dude bro weed smoker transplants typically hate cold weather but I would legitimately be in favor of outlawing skiing and snow boarding to get rid of those motherfucking second home owners and adding a 500% property tax for anyone that isn’t a year round resident. Montana benefits from its horizontal geography. Miles City all the way to Missoula give you a huge range of outdoor options. They have already become the next target. Idaho set the fucking standard in telling the yuppies to fuck off and die. The mountains are very coniferous and dull by comparison to Colorado imo but still incredibly based place. Wyoming is a whole different world though. Parts of it are so desolate that fucking up and missing a gas station in April can potentially be life threatening. Ban EV charging stations please for the love of Christ.

This. But it really depends on what part of each state. Like the western Colorado slope bro alluded to. Yeah your state politics is ass but you have to ask how much it effects you and long term it will probably drive people out like California.
I've determined you need factors that keep normals out whether its too much rain, too much snow, too remote, etcetera. This isn't even hippie boomers but all boomers including wingnut right boomers cause they'll gentrify too.
Eastern and Southern Oregon are hidden gems too in areas also for this reason. The i5 corridor is meth highway but there's great spots in the coastal and cascade mountain ranges.
I'd add N Idaho, Montana outside liberal towns albeit west is the pretty area. Some places in Eastern Washington.

Yellowstone is the GOAT
Tetons only exist to get to Yellowstone
Glacier is a piece of shit and Canada are cocksuckers
Rocky Mountain is pretty based but since I can go there after work and be back by 9pm it lacks being special

>NTA but that's a terrible cope.
you've misused the word "cope". That anon claims to have an /out/ job, but also necessarily doesn't realize that vast portions of Arizona are at elevation and thus it's comically inaccurate to claim that you can't hike there due to extreme heat. This very basic fact has also apparently eluded you. That's such a dumb mistake that I don't believe "NTA"

Arizona has more forest area, more desert area, more canyons, more extreme climate transition zones (Bwh to Et in 51 miles), and more private and public land than Utah. In the entire USA, the world record confirmed Elks (by score, and by per capita) are from Arizona and Utah. After big winter snowstorms (30-100 inches in 72 hours, on average 1-3 such events every winter) it is possible to backcountry snowmobile for 250-300 miles one way in Arizona on mostly flat terrain entirely above 6,400 ft ASL. Also pro-tip, Arizona and Utah are full and you cannot afford it anyways.

Best among the OP pic. Montana, but it is also full and you cannot afford it anyway as well.
