What are hostels like? I've always paid for hotels. Do people actually get good sleep in them or is it loud party most nights?

For me it's Wyoming. It's got a mix of everything. It's like Colorado but without the peak bagging autism, and the ranges have much cooler basin and allies.
I haven't spent any time in Northern Idaho (north of Craters), but I found a lot of Southern Idaho to be very boring save for a few region like Twin Falls with the Gorge and SE Idaho.
Montana was an absolute snorefest for me east of Glacier, probably my fault for going through the northern reservation land rather than going south more. Glaciers and west of that / down through to Yellowstone was great tho.
