I never understood why isnt the missouri river THE mississippi river if its the longest and largest watersherd. Is it really just discharge comparison when the two meet? Isnt that much more variable for the missouri than the northern mississippi? Who the cares about the bit into minnesota anyway, all american cultural heritage has the missouri as most important

I think it's because bongs, Americans and the frogs would have found the mississippi before we found the missouri. like the mississippi was probably found in new orleans and if you go from the east coast you probably hit the mississippi south of st. louis off of the ohio or tennessee so you would have gotten the mississippi name from the tribes who lived down river.
the nile gets around this because the 2 major sources are the white nile and the blue nile. but the nile still does the retarded thing where the white nile is longer so it's the source/headwaters even though 80% of the discharge comes from the blue nile

Chicago originally flowed into Lake Michigan. They actually reversed the river 100 years ago to avoid polluting Lake Michigan. It then made the Mississippi more polluted but Chicago didn't care about that.
