>Alright, these are getting reposted now. Fuck that other thread.

Went to a decently popular race at the local track the other day, and it was quite a fun experience. I learnt a lot, and really started to understand things better as I went. These aren't top-tier photos by any means, but fuck it, I'm enjoying it and that's all that matters.

A few fuck ups on my behalf: A monopod without a head is a bitch to use properly. Dust in the sensor halfway into the day, reeeee. Focal Length is no replacement for getting close enough.
Most of it shot on my RF 100-400 f/5.6-8 on an R50.

Probably my favourite shot from the day. Panning is difficult when things are zipping past so quickly. This was shot at 1/80th.
I think the panning detect of RF lenses is not that good for this kind of stuff, and this was shot with IS off.

Dutch angles really went well with lots of the scenes. The lighting was good, my technique was getting more consistent, and having a zoom lens on hand instead of a prime meant I was getting composition right OOC. Positioning and technique was the most important factors at play. Even if nothing came out perfect, I truly was enjoying this and getting better.

As an aside. I tried speaking with a few other photogs there. Every Vietnamese vlogger and boomer with their old 70-200s was seemingly here, so I thought it might be a good chance to have a chat. Every. Single. Person just used the excuse to fag on about their gear. One person actually got talking to me about composition and idea, and it was only after I brushed off his questions about my gear.

It was disappointing really. Dozens upon dozens of photogs, and all anyone wanted to talk about was how much thier lens cost.

Where are you going that you get to see these beasts of an age gone by? Being stuck in Australia, the chance to see classic prototypes and touring cars is limited outside of major events.

Pic unrelated I assume. Nice shots though. Fast action pics like these make me really curious to see the shot settings.

I've had people walk up and ask shit about my camera too. I figure it was just a way for bored cunts to start a conversation with a stranger, I'd never go out of my way to do that myself but I don't just brush them off based on that either. You're at a motor sport event btw, they're even bigger gearfags than photographers for what it's worth.

i have actually saved money ignoring motorsports and getting into photography

cars break moreso when you abuse them and when they do its at least $500+ you did not want to spend at all

track events are $500-800 assuming nothing goes wrong for the day
Anonymous No.4425311 [Report]
>>4425307
It's a massive money sink yeah. But what I meant was when they talk it's mostly about what tyres and suspension ect they're using and less about how to use it. Now that makes some sense in a competitive environment but the average street hoons or enthusiasts or whateverthefuckonwheels are exactly the same.

Because I'm not carrying a grad around for a race day and would rather the highlights blown than the shadows crushed.
You know, like when the sun is bright, and it actually causes parts of the material to look blown out to your eye as well. I did actually take a photo of that car with the highlights lowered, but then the front section in the shade was basically black. Midday sun, feelsbadman.

Actually nah, I see what you mean. I fucked something up during post.
Just grabbed a different photo with less exposure and was a bit more concious of it, but I'm not that happy with how dark the rest of the scene is. I can't tell what one I prefer, but this is 1 stop down in aperture so the rear of the car is better in focus.

I'm still learning how to do panning shots properly, and what shutter speeds to use at what speeds.

NTA but I agree with what you said.

This would have been an excellent one to try a long exposure at a super small aperture with, possibly needing an ND to cut light out.

Long exposure can remove some of the people in-camera assuming they're not dawdling in any one spot too long.

I found my people and I loved it so much I've been building my own Bonneville car, a Ford Probe, for F/BGC, F engine class which is 2L to 3L displacement and Blown Gas Coupe, which is turbo/supercharged/nitrous or other power adders, Gasoline so no meth injection or alcohol just C16 race fuel, and Coupe which is two-door production car or a car that was offered as a coupe, we have a Volkswagen Passat in G/BGC that did 232mph

If you're serious, apply for a press pass and you'll have full unfettered access.

You don't, Southern California Timing Association is pretty lax about that stuff. Bonneville isn't like other racing events, spectators have full access already, you need the press pass for the start line to get right up next to the cars as they set off.

Bonneville and pretty much everything SCTA does is very grassroots motorsport, you'll have big mega companies like Hyundai come out there with a car to attempt a record and they get clapped by Billy Bob Jo and Cleetus in their turbo 3rd-gen Camaro they built in their shed while getting shitfaced on Busch Light and listening to Kid Rock. It's a great time, and it doesn't end there, Wendover has a bunch of casinos and you're a stone's throw away from Ely, NV which has the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, get out there and do it, tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

Bonneville is the Holy Grail and absolute Mecca of motorsports. There is something for everyone, and anyone can compete, unlike Nascar and Formula 1 where only nepotism and a big bank account gets you in, there was a guy last year who built a 49cc French moped, front wheel drive, with a Temu supercharger on it and set his class record. Right after he finished, the Speed Demon >>4430153 set the event course record at 450-ish mph.

Spun a rod bearing on the #6 cylinder during testing at the top of 4th at 9300rpm, but it will live. There's no knocking sound below 2000rpm so the crank probably isn't trashed but I have spares and it will be off to Interprep in NY who specializes in the Mazda KL platform, they used to race them in SCCA Showroom Stock class and know these engines inside and out. It's getting there though.

What do I do if I want to take some photos and videos of my car but I'm a friendless loser?
I can only do one thing at a time, of course, and that make things a lot harder. I obviously can't use a chase car or anything like that. If I set up my camera on the side of the road I risk getting it stolen, but it's still doable I guess.

Any ideas? Maybe some creative shots or videos you've seen?

The other side to cars is capturing them being fast, sure you can shoot at like 1/4000 and rip off 120FPS. But shit is still gonna look parked on the tracks unless it's head on and the car is doing something cool like smashing off a curb. Getting those low shutter speed pans down in the 1/20, 1/10, 1/5 and even lower is a fun challenge track side. But yeah, you do often seen someone plopped down with a pro body and some 400 2.8 taking static shots.

Night motorsports is such a fuck. Constantly struggling for light even when you dial the shutter speed low for panning. Can't use a CPL because it robs you of light you don't have to spare. Metering varies wildly depending on how many track lights you catch in a shot.

I think I'll just embrace the noise because some shots are still cool regardless.

Now they make something called the H2 which is completely bonkers. And the H2R which (iirc) isn't road legal and might be the single easiest way a human can reach 400 Km/h. Completely nuts.

When it came to that shot it was really just a spur of the moment thing. I was setup to get this picture here. The head-on, leaning off the bike almost dragging knee shot. However when the guy went to leave he threw up a peace sign as he left knowing I was there. Just a cool little interaction between two people who have never really met before.

Looks like everything except the mini is a panning shot. They're tricky to nail, moreso the faster the vehicle is moving and the closer you are to it. I'll be honest, about 15% of my shots from that day >>4425258 were sharp enough to keep. Enough daylight to shoot at base ISO and use a CPL helps them come out cleaner and with more contrast. But sometimes you just have to settle for a subpar shot (pic rel) that still looks cool.
ETTR if light allows it without burning highlights, and you'll practically have zero noise when you adjust things in post.

>How do i make sure people know its my work? copyright in metadata or watermake signature?
I wouldn't watermark or copyright anything you're posting to 4chins. Easiest way is to resize smaller and post that so you're the only one with the larger file. Metadata can be scrubbed and edited by anyone. There's not really any way to 100% guarantee someone won't steal your shit.
