This, it’s not even Nikon as a formal company name, it’s a poor translation of a name for a region where multiple towns held multiple companies that made all kinds of shit, some of which went into cameras produced by yet others in the region. Nikon has a fucking crazy history. It was never so clear cut as “A camera company called Nikon” and still isn’t. And it doesn’t matter how you pronounce it bc Nikon never was the correct name for it anyway.

The Japs were retarded.
If they wanted it to be pronounced "Nik-on", all they had to do was add a second K to the Romanization as they did the Nikkor optics line.
The only reason that "Canon" is pronounced the way it is is because the noun cannon is far more common than Canaan.

So? The best Nikons are the film era ones due to the wide selection of SLR bodies that are pretty much all compatible with modern-ish glass. Their DSLR's have that goofy plastic mount shit and weird colours, and their mirrorless aren't bad but Canon and Sony are have stronger marketing and brand presence.

Lmao yeah, they're dying. Despite what /p/ says, fucking up on autofocus is a big deal. The vast majority of people will not spend thousands of dollars on a giant blob with shitty autofocus when they could spend much less on superior products. Like, even fujis focused better than their first batch of mirrorless.

As much as nikon fanboys love the superior tech specs when it suits them and denies their importance ("every camera is good there ackshually") when nikon loses some contest, the market isn't actually driven by pixel peeping and color science memes - and despite the brand wars here, nikon had a huge reputation for unreliability IRL and opened up their entry into mirrorless with five recalls, and the grips do still peel off. Nikon fell very far behind as a business and might go full panasonic as time goes on. It's not looking good.

I have way higher hopes for fucking fujifilm than I do for nikon.

Or if Sony actually made small lenses.
Anonymous No.4442362
>>4442360
Zeiss, samyang, and viltrox already make small lenses so why would sony waste their time tarnishing their image by making a lens as awful as say, the nikon z 26mm f2.8 or the RF 28mm f2.8 which is literally a scaled up smartphone lens?
Anonymous No.4442365 >>4442371 >>4442379 >>4442386

Its just not possible due to the physical limitations of the e-mount design. The mount isn't wide enough.
Anonymous No.4442371 >>4442375
>>4442365
But small lenses exist for sony, and the smallest lenses on other brands are fucking horrid and literally unusable for video due to focus breathing by over 5mm worth of focal length and audible focus motor noises combined with a focus by wire design that requires running the motor.

In fact, if you add the filter threads back to nikon's shitty pancake, it's the same size as the 35mm f2.8 ZA and samyang 35mm f2.8

The actual problem is mounts are too shallow. Sensors have to be set further back into the body to make good (aka rear focusing) pancakes. With these shallow mounts used by canon, nikon, and sony, a GOOD pancake under 35mm is not actually possible. Shallow mounts are absolutely ideal for making the sharpest possible pro zooms and fast primes because the rear element can be huge, but for small lenses desired by artists it's absolutely not possible for RF, Z, L, or FE mounts to support a good pancake and it's a small miracle sony got lenses like the viltrox 50mm f2, sigma 90mm f2.9, etc.

In the end leica M mount cameras are expensive because japan failed so hard everyone still wants one, and germany can only make so many. There is no real better option among the japanese brands. Only different flavors of worse. If you want a mount that prioritizes lens designs actual photographers want, you need to go to leica M.

Forgot to mention the z 26mm has really bad rendering with extreme central sharpness and extreme sharpness falloff, plus 3 stop vignetting, and the rf has a similar problem with extremely sterile phone-like rendering and again, 3 stop vignetting

Japanese lens mounts are too shallow
The x100 series proves the lens has to protrude deep into the body for a camera to be small
Anonymous No.4442379 >>4442381 >>4442386

Thats because it was never intended for a FF sized sensor. It was always designed for APS-C.
Anonymous No.4442381 >>4442390
>>4442379
And yet the maximum aperture it can support is f0.7

Maybe you should leave theorycrafting about engineering... to the engineers. The fact is, sony hasn't released a pancake because the RF and Z mount pancakes proved that shallow mirrorless mounts can not actually support a good pancake lens. In order to work a variable aperture lens must focus, and for it to focus some part of the lens must move proportionate to the focusing distance.

RF and Z "solved" this by having the lens extend. On the "superior" Z mount, the part of the lens that extends is so small and flimsy, it has to lose its pancake status if it is to be durable and have filter threads. On RF mount, exotic elements taken from smartphone camera design are used and the part that extends is fat enough to have filter threads, but it still focus breathes from 28mm to 35mm, and vignettes over 3 stops.

If an actual good pancake can not be engineered I don't think sony will ever release one, so long as the third party market is willing to make a garbage lens for them.

It certainly is a shame that there are few pancake lenses for mirrorless when compactness was one of the early marketing points for switching over from DSLRs. Thankfully we can just use small adapted M mount lenses and git gud at SOVLful manual focusing

So, only canon can make a pancake that has filter threads, a variable aperture, and autofocus, but they can't make a normal sized camera with a real full frame sensor and IBIS?

The RP shouldn't even count. it has the same dynamic range as an olympus OM-5 and no IBIS. it can't be considered a serious competitor to any camera, really. an OM-5 is objectively superior. total joke.

Truly, you only have micro four thirds and sony to choose from.
