Who's ready for some urban decay?

Today's subject is Raceland, Kentucky, an Ohio River town that was named after what was once its biggest draw: horse racing.

Raceland is a quiet town these days. Designed before the automobile became widespread, what's left of the town is fairly walkable, but it has long been repurposed as a commuter suburb to the nearby Ashland. Not much happens here anymore, and the energy of a once-vibrant town remains dormant.

that shade of yellow is not serving the photo very well. try split toning with magenta to offset the intensity.
>>4442481
this is much easier on the eyes
play with the colours more
it is very difficult to strike the right balance
yellow is always difficult. it either goes too green or too orange and there's only a hair's breadth of range where "yellow" seems to exist.

I've adopted the processing workflow from Rawpedia's "Toolchain Pipeline" page. It helps me decide where to start, what tools to use next and where to finish up. I've now also at least looked at every tool available to me in RawTherapee, although using every single one to edit a photo is unnecessary. For this one it went something like:
>chromatic aberration correction (automatic)
>highlight recovery (using highlight compression)
>white balance (using the pipette)
>noise reduction (standard settings)
>impulse noise reduction (decreased the threshold until salt-and-pepper noise seemed less apparent at ~300% magnification)
>tone curve adjustments (spent a while here making adjustments to increase contrast without clipping too much out of the shadows or highlights and to increase saturation without clipping colors; made use of the respective clipping indicators; here's the final product: ibb (d o t) co/F4QZBwnX)
>LAB adjustments (used the L-channel curve to increase luminance through the midtones while keeping shadows and highlights anchored; used the chrominance based on luminance curve to increase saturation (chrominance?) through the midtones while keeping shadows and highlights, again, anchored)
that was it. thanks for reading.

>highlight recovery
>white balance
>cropped a distracting light area from the right-hand side
>default noise reduction
>haze removal
Used the depth map adjust the depth slider and the strength until there was a subtle but noticeable improvement.
>local adjustments
Used one on the top right-hand side to darken the far riverbank and another on the left-hand side to increase lightness on the tarp.
>tone curve
Used to lighten the foreground as much as possible without increasing the haze.
>local contrast
Adjusted the darkness and lightness levels, amount and radius until there was a noticeable but not destructive increase in edges.
>LAB adjustments
Used the chrominance based on luminance curve to increase saturation lightly in the lower midtones.
>soft light
Decreased from default.

>hot pixel filter
>changed demosaicing algorithm from AMaZE to IGV
The default is AMaZE but IGV and LMMSE produce less maze-like patterns on high ISO photos.
>highlight recovery
I saw clipped highlights in the RAW histogram, turned on the indicator and highlight reconstruction then increased highlight compression. It wasn't strong enough so I dropped exposure as well.
>set white balance using pipette
>crop to centre the light
>noise reduction
>tone curve
Played around (https://ibb(d o t) co/4ZsbVwFJ) until it looked "good". I had to reduce saturation by five points because the light was oversaturated
>Film simulation
Downloaded RawTherapee's CLUT collection and found a good one: Polaroid 669 Cold 1--
>LAB adjustment
Lifted the black point until there was a subtle gradient from light to dark.
Anonymous No.4442610 [Report] >>4442622 >>4442681
PROCESS
>hot pixel filter
>demosaicing
Changed the algorithm from AMaZE to IGV to improve the look of the noise patterning.
>white balance
>noise reduction
Reduced the gamma to target shadows more, used a luminance curve to reduce the graininess and turned on the median filter option to eliminate artifacting. After reviewing the JPEGs though, it seemed like I went too far, so I went back and turned off the luminance adjustment and the median filter.
>haze removal
Adjusted it until it seemed like an improvement.
>tone curve
I couldn't use the standard curve option because the photo was already oversaturated and the standard curve increases saturation and contrast simultaneously, so I used a saturation and value blending curve which, iirc from the Rawpedia article, adjusts saturation less which gave me more leeway to increase contrast. I used the second curve to just increase contrast in the midtones (see: https://ibb(d o t)co/W4zGbZZD)
>HSV equaliser
Used the hue option to reduce the green-to-red cast produced by my camera's max ISO settings.
>color toning
Used the RGB curves method and, by looking at the hue-saturation vectorscope, decided what colours to use in my light and dark areas, then I adjusted the curves for color and opacity until it "looked good."
>local contrast
Turned it on and it immediately threw a bunch of dark areas out-of-gamut. I prefer to preserve as much detail as possible for smoother grades between colors. By the time I was finished decreasing the intensity, I could barely tell the difference between it turned on or off, so I left it on. Waste of time?
>impulse noise reduction
Removed salt-and-pepper noise.
Anonymous No.4442613 [Report] >>4442622
PROCESS
>hot pixel filter
>changed the demoz algorithm to IGV to reduce maze-like noise patterning
>highlight recovery
Used the color propagation mode of highlight reconstruction to keep as much color detail as possible, then used a mix of exposure compensation and highlight compression to remove the clipped areas.
>white balance
Used the pipette to pick a spot from the whitest-looking window. I used a spot around the edges where the light was less intense, more "neutral."
>noise reduction
Default settings.
>tone curves
I couldn't get much out of the shadows without going out-of-gamut but I was able to lift the midtones and highlights (see: ibb(d o t)co/sv1cdxJJ). I used the saturation and value blending mode on the first curve again to increase contrast without adjusting saturation too much, then I used a weighted standard curve on the second curve because it *does* contrast and saturation together, like the standard curve, but it's more subtle. Read the exposure page on Rawpedia for more info. I had to turn saturation down by -39 anyway. These high ISO images seem to bake hard.
>color toning
Used the hue-saturation vectorscope as a guide to decide what colors to start with but after that I kept my eyes on the photo and adjusted the position of the points of the two curves and the curve "weight" (how much it leant to one side or the other) until it seemed "good" (see: ibb(d o t)co/zhWR3bFy). The out-of-gamut color indicator keeps me from going too far, I think. I would probably get more high-key results just following my eye.
>local contrast
Used a smidge again. Again, the out-of-gamut color indicator reins me in on making adjustments. As I left it, I could barely see any difference.
>LAB adjustments
Used the L* curve to lift the lower midtones (actually the spread of light around the windows).
>impulse noise reduction
Removed salt-and-pepper noise.
NB: you can only see noise reduction adjustments at 1:1 view or more.

I don't have anything new to process so I'm going through unprocessed photos and seeing what I can salvage.

I cropped the absolute shit out of this one because the composition was honestly pretty bad. Not sure how I feel about it yet.

Why do people do this?

I love photos like this showing older vehicles in a working context. I think you could improve this with more neutral colors - right now it leans warm to my eye.

This has a lot of potential. I would look at Gregory Crewdson for some editing inpso (I know he is a bit heavy handed but it fits this vibe). His stuff is very meticulously lit, but the grading style could translate well to this sort of shot

you may not be comfortable with this but I like to yell "HEY" at people to get them to face the camera. it's not as aggressive as it sounds, just make it loud enough to get their attention.
