I recently got into first amendment auditors on youtube. The amount of ignorant people is pretty funny.
If you are gonna shoot street- at the very least learn how to fight, carry a gun, and/or run fast. Most of the time people don't care, those that do have been mostly positive interactions (exchanging emails, smiles, waves.) the negative ones are people telling me to delete it (No.) or flipping me off (kino)
I've got into a physical altercation after I took a pic of homeless crackheads smoking on the train. Be mindful of your subjects, play at your own risk.

Luckily it wasn't just put out and had been there for a few days I think, but I did have to try and avoid all the glass and melted shit spread everywhere. I have a few more angles, so I'll post one or two more once I tweak them just a little.

Nice shot. The reflections off the buildings help a great deal.

Went up this insane road today, not the best weather for shooting, almost totally socked in with fog and clouds.

At anon's recommendation, I went to Walmart and printed off a handful of 4x6 and 5x7 at the kiosk. Overall, I'm satisfied to see my work outside of the context of a screen. It's a good suggestion and I'm going to put some on my wall in my office to continue looking at them critically over time.

That said, there are some minor differences between what I see on my desktop and the physical prints. The prints seem more blue and slightly darker than what I was editing them to be. I'm sure that's to be expected in some capacity. As a novice, what should be my takeaway from this? Should I get my monitors calibrated with a tool? Should I be tweaking edits before a print? Should I simply embrace this slice of chaos? I welcome anecdotes and advice.

I think even just cropping out some of the uninteresting stuff makes the over-exposed flowers more interesting to look at and it increases the contrast without even adjusting the luminance because thereโ€™s less flat areas overall now.

Nice composition. Didnโ€™t see the hiking sign at first and I liked it more when I saw the full image. Hiking and photography go hand in hand, and itโ€™s the photography that encourages me to hike more/farther/to new spots.

Hereโ€™s one from my hike today. The background really makes it feel tilted but Iโ€™m fairly sure itโ€™s relatively level.

sorry dude it was better the way i had it
the blown out flowers are a focal point but not enough to be a whole subject on their own. the photo depends on the busy-ness of the surrounding leaves to contrast the featurelessness of the flowers and the light falloff toward the edges of the frame to contrast and lead the eye to their blinding brightness. also, the little pieces of ambiently lit background visible behind the plant support the unnatural feeling of the flash. in any case, don't worry about hte quality of my throwaway photos. consider a critique, not just mine but in general, if it suits your goals

Eh, I agree with the edit. The flowers around the edges create too many visual tangents and makes it just look like a lazy snap.

The light falloff is too gradual to really frame anything. If you wanted to do that flash effect you need to lower your exposure so the shadows actually end up closer to black, you're all midtones and barely any actual shadows.

I grew up in gulf coast texas so it seems pretty normal to me. my grandpa and I used to go fishing in a wetlands area along the louisiana border and you could see tankers coming in and out from the various refineries at the boat launch. since it was a small town there were no real big buildings and the various condensing and other towers really dominated the landscape. picrel

Probably the best picture in the thread. Let's the viewer make a story. I think good pictures either tell you a story in an image or give you a lot of stuff to see to make your own story based on your experience. For me it's the drain and the old man - he's walking past this puddle on the sidewalk and it's drying up, running out, going down the drain. He's turned to it, looking down, and maybe he's relating it to his life. Great lines leading you around the image - sidewalk lines, lines from the power pole taking you back to the drain and the old man.

Maybe push the contrast up? It's a little too flat/grey. Not sure that's good or bad but when you're taking B&Ws you only get to play with value so you really want to nail dark darks and white whites and have just one (maybe two) mid tone areas. All of this is subjective though - might not work in post. Your call.

i think the real irony here is that we all knoww that everyone that posts here generally is varying degrees of shit. that's not necessarily meant as an insult, more as a matter of fact. i'm shit, you're shit. most of the photos in this thread are shit. but it feels like a lot of time people here aren't looking for anything except people to tell them "wow that looks cool", perhaps out of some misguided sense of "well it looked cool to me when i took it". that's not how visual arts work. you can't control what the viewer will think. influence it maybe, but you are decoupled from your work as soon as you put it out. wanting a hugbox of love is what reddit and instagram are for. i like this place because everywhere else would be afraid to remind people that they're shit. yeah, it's not constructive necessarily most of the time, but honestly, i still have gotten good advice and information outt of this place. even in its recent "no more good shooters herre" era.

Correct, but that is something we can embrace rather than hate each other over. Providing thoughtful critique can improve your own photography in ways that simply taking pics can't, so can defending your picture!
Crying nophoto and then angrily calling someone a fag because they said your picture was a snapshot then getting btfo will not improve your photography.

Reasonable and honest critique does not require an attached photograph to be valid because the critique is reasonable and honest. Defend your work instead of getting salty about it!

All three of those and yours are snapshots, yes.
An upside down reflection in a puddle is like one of the standard beginner "neat" shots. You gave us a small copy, but it doesn't really look the most detailed. None of your lines align with any particular axis, and the cropping seems largely arbitrary. Why not shoot so the pole is perfectly vertical? Or so the lines of the pavement even out on each side? Why not align it so the garbage meets at the top of the pole instead of off to the side and intersecting the the wires? With the the three wires and the two grates, it would cool to use those wires to dissect the two grates and third wire to intersect with the person.
The truck shot, Idk what's going on, and obviously even worse on a technical level, but similar issues of framing and composition.
The sign shot could be more interesting if the cropping were different to show the full sign, and angled a bit (or keystoned) so the building looks like it's staying vertical.
The bike is clearly better, but even the bike has hallmarks of JPG/beginner processing when looking at the details. Also feels arbitrarily cropped and not aligned.

Your shows more thought sure, but it doesn't stand out as any better when looking at the thread as a whole.

So the meaning behind the shot or the clear and obvious considerations into composition mean absolutely nothing? It doesn't matter if the reflection thing is taught in first grade photo school. You know what else is? Pointing your camera and pressing the shutter button. It's what you do with it that counts. The photo of a reflection adds to the whole meaning of the photograph in a very good way.

It's a 35mm film pic scanned with a shit scanner. There are zero technical issues with the shot. In the real world technical issues would mean that it loses value due to image quality issues. The picture would not gain anything from being sharper, and honestly, the lower resolution look of it enhances the overall look of the image IMO.

A better crop would be great as was pointed out in the other thread.

What meaning is it adding?

>It's a 35mm film pic scanned with a shit scanner.
So you agree its of poor technical quality (ignoring the sepia tone too).
>There are zero technical issues with the shot.
Why does the texture of the ground look so muddied and undetailed? Why is there nothing that actually looks "sharp"?
>The picture would not gain anything from being sharper, and honestly, the lower resolution look of it enhances the overall look of the image IMO.
So you don't actually care about the technical side then. Did the truck look better too because of all the noise?

It's a reflection of self. The person appears to be looking at the camera/the viewer, aging, life draining away. The muddled look of the reflection lets the viewer fill in the blanks.
All pictures are interpretive, but I think something along those lines is pretty obvious if you give the image a little thought.

>technical quality
Just because a picture is lower resolution or grainy does not make it worse or poor technical quality. It can actually make the image much better if done right. The image is in focus, properly exposed, and would make a great looking print. The lower resolution/grain adds to a more surreal/dreamy look of the image. Using a 100MP camera would not make it better, and possibly make it worse, and caring about tiny details entirely unrelated to the entire point of the image is not a real problem.

I think the guy added grain to his truck shot. Completely different story.

If you made an 8x10 darkroom print of the image it would be entirely acceptable image quality and the nice grain of real film would not be a detriment to the image. I do not really care if the scan looks like shit because the scan is not the final form of this image. The print is.

Or they're looking at the pole or looking at the garbage and now the meaning is about picking up trash or telecommunications.

All I see is a low res scan of an inverted puddle reflection in sepia.

>Just because a picture is lower resolution or grainy does not make it worse or poor technical quality
Most of the time it does. It's just resolution and I even acknowledged we are only seeing low res. At a certain point, you are losing texture and detail, which your photo really lacks. If increasing the resolution and/or detail of shot makes it worse, it's probably just a bad shot that you're hiding behind a "lofi" look.

Why do gearfags hate art so damn much? The clinical look is often detrimental and even unrealistic, "flaws" can sometimes make a picture more akin to a memory of some past. The "magic" of film is partly how much it resembles a memory. Sometimes photography makes sense as a negative art, by getting rid of the unimportant to focus on what is.

This >>4449518 has been absolutely proven beyond all reasonable doubt.

I didn't get mad in the face of criticism. I defended my picture in a level headed manner because I have zero insecurities about my photo and my photography. I enjoy talking about photography and debating whether or not a photo has artistic merit is fun and helps me get better at making art.

Stay frosty

>It's a reflection of [21st century humanity]. The [plane] appears to be [flying away from] the camera/the viewer, [suggesting uncertainty or a distant future]. The [white to blue gradient of the sky] [places the plane in a position of orbit, suggesting a repetitive, cyclical nature of human existence].

It's a reflection [on aging]. The person appears to be looking [into their own past, away from] the camera/the viewer, [ruminating, pondering]. The [blurred, out-of-focus background suggests distance and haziness, removing clarity from a once-sharp recollection. Darkness, meanwhile, frames the old man, suggesting the void he is only too aware he will soon occupy].
>>4447313
It's a reflection [on youth and growing up]. The [sneakers, a symbol of youth, are tied to a track that does not come near the lofty peaks of tradition]. The [clouds and clear blue sky suggest this is reality, like a story you could see playing out from your bedroom window].

It's a reflection [on the alien and the uncanny in the mundane]. The [landscape] appears to be [from another planet, yet the form of the foliage and the cloudy skyline bring this place โ€œdown to earthโ€]. The [predominant pinks] [make] the viewer [feel like they are a predator stalking their prey through the mountains].

It's a reflection [on confinement and intimacy]. The [cat] appears to be [close to] the camera/the viewer [yet the metal bars add a degree of separation, subtly drawing attention to the aloof feline nature]. The [precise placement of the vertical bar through the catโ€™s face makes the viewer feel the frustration of failing to give a street cat a good scratch behind the ears].

The tiktok generation cannot look at photos for more than 5 seconds without feeling physical pain. Someone will get mad at you for saying you enjoyed art/photography on a level deeper than the most superficial one possible.

Ok my turn. Its a frame shop. But the shop is built on a frame that's a completely different kind from the one they are selling. One might even say, the frame shop has been framed. The underexposure emphasizes this grim reality.

Okay my turn

This post >>4450151 is the true reflection of someone who takes shitty photos, but thinks they take world class photos. This post emphasizes the anger and sadness when confronted reality. Musings of cope intertwined with pure sadness and anger subtly hint at the true pain in this text. The real and strong emotions within this post symbolize both the insecurity and snapshitting quality of your average badphoto. You could call it a snapshot without a photograph.

A true artistic masterpiece. 10/10

The tranny jannies only delete them (and ban the posters) because fagotty ass nophotos keep reporting them as "poor composition". These welfare bums with $20 boomer film cameras wouldn't recognize good composition of it smacked them in the ass. Yeah, jannies playing editors will do wonders for the dwindling visitor count of this dying site.
