My brain sees a lake at dusk, really great photo. I bet it would look excellent oversized.

Beginning to process my recent IR shots. Thank you to whoever reminded my to use the full blast hot pixel setting, even though battery goes twice as fast it’s totally worth it. Also on this camera and unlike my older canon I seem to be able to take a new photo while the camera does the processing

That’s great advice thank you. I’m honestly pretty shit in dark table and would like to improve. They’re definitely too dark without increasing exposure but I’m not fiddling with highlights or anything else related to brightness.

>>4450100
Yes very windy and up higher I couldn’t keep the tripod still so lost a lot of material. These are iso800 and about 8 seconds in full sun to about 13 in part shade. Most are 8 to 10 seconds.

Should I just not take a picture if there's no interesting subject? I feel like this photo could be better if someone was present on the bench. Do you guys just pass by spots like these? Or am I not creative enough to give the scene interesting look without subject?

this is a contentious point of debate in even the greater "art" world not just photo. most here would call it a snapshit and say it isn't meritous to share, nevermind capture, but then that is at odds with the personal fulfilment aspect of art and creation, right? Is it satisfying to YOU to capture it? and why isn't that enough? i won't answer your question because i don't know that there is a correct answer, but just think about that. and no it's not just cope because i take pictures like that or even more uninteresting all the time, not at all i swear.
Anonymous No.4450164 >>4450168

Yeah I feel like when I was traveling with a friend, I took mostly photos of her, so now when missing the subject in photos it leaves an unsatisfactory feeling for me deep down, man I hate that, thanks
Anonymous No.4450168 >>4450174
>>4450153
You obviously thought something here was interesting enough to hit the shutter button otherwise the picture wouldn't exist. If you're looking at it afterward and realizing that there isn't anything there, think about what you expected vs. what you got and why you aren't satisfied, to better judge subjects and photos in the future.

>subject appears to be the bench
>bad lighting on the subject
>not level
>not centered on the subject or at a pleasing angle
>overall flat
>blown highlights distract the eye

>>4450164
Ah, yeah that way you have an easy and mobile subject to shoot. Much easier to place her in good lighting or with interesting backgrounds etc.
Anonymous No.4450174
>>4450168
Yeah, that's the raw, just wanted to hear an opinion about the "subject" probably gonna try and fix it in post. I see how the bench could be one, but I don't think it's a good photo overall. Thanks

It's a reflection on vanity and emptiness. The bench appears to be begging the camera/the viewer to sit down for some justification of its existence. The lightness of the background draws the viewer’s eye away from the subject, prophesying the useless future of the bench when nature will again β€œhave its time in the sun.”
All pictures are interpretive, but I think something along those lines is pretty obvious if you give the image a little thought.

Definitely brought the contrast and saturation up a bit because it was a very rainy, grey day. Went heavier on the shadows as well to help the contrast. NTA. Having monitors' brightness cranked is technically out of calibration for sRGB/AdobeRGB so everything is going to look higher exposed than it really is. If you edit off a monitor like that when others view it, it will look dark.

It feels dark because the fields in the background are brighter than the subject in the foreground. I like the cows.

How'd you find the process anon? I like it from time-to-time, usually mixing it up with evaluative metering + exposure control +-. I could imagine you spot checked the cow at -2 or something like that?

I see elements of why you maybe took it, the bench has interesting weatherd colouring but the background actually appears more in focus.

Backdrop has nice lighting and is aesthetic if not a bit bright but there is no story telling aspect I can pick up on unless I was to overanalyse - the trash ruins it unless that is part of the intention.

There is something there and everywhere you look though, inherently we are playing with shape and lighting and colour and emotion and all that pretentious crap.

Every photo is an opportunity to practice and learn the creative process, so sure, take the picture but dont just fire and forget. Do like you are now and analyse why your took it, what drew you to take it, what you like and dont like what settings you used and how the picture mightve changed if you used them differently.

Try with different distances or angles, make your subject more and less prominent, try positioning it to different parts of the frame or looking at it from angles you dont usually try.

Idk, some thoughts above, may or may not help, I am no professional and only just picked back up my camera but i feel taking multiple different shots helps when i review later.

I guess I could make my own thread soon, but I don't feel like anything is good enough. It's better when the black and white can make reality feel ambiguous and convey the feeling better that way. This feels just like posting some cliche, but I think Lynch would have liked it so that's enough.

These were shot at night with a 14mm lens. The graininess came from high ISO settings. For it to look grainy but not disgusting, I used noise reduction, impulse noise reduction and desaturated the images in RawTherapee.
The truck shot needed slow shutter speed to create the motion blur. That’s 100% down to camera settings.
>>4451034
I can’t quite remember the focal length but I think it was like 50mm or so. It’s probably underexposed by one stop, looking at it now. Anyway, for this one and all the others I used tone curve adjustments in RawTherapee to create more contrast between light and dark areas. I tried to look for high contrast moments of lighting when I took the shots but I wanted to push it further in post-processing. That’s something cameras will do for you if you shoot in JPEG. Every company has their own image processing style for their JPEGs which make adjustments to contrast and saturation for you. You need to shoot RAW if you want to click buttons later on in Photoshop.
I think a Sony a6100 will be a great first camera. Look for one used with a lens (or a few), or any other good deal on a used body and lenses. Keep an open mind approaching gear. You can take good photos with any brand’s cameras: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, etc.

Just try taking best photos you can of whatever interests you. When checking your shots at home think what you could do better at next time. Keep on it. If you have talent, every mindful shot will make you a tiny bit better. (Snaps will not.) Worst case you'll still have a lot of snaps of whatever interests you. Gear can make taking good photos easier but can't make a bad photo good.

A lot to do with how you take the photo, and a lot to do with what you do after taking it. My pic >>4452026 was shot at 300mm for the compression with a small aperture to get more in focus.

I'd look into dslr's on a lower budget, just because you can get e.g. a Canon 6D or Nikon D600/D610 for cheap if you know where to look. The advantage of crop sensor mirrorless is the size, but the image quality isn't quite the same. Just look at some sample photos and choose a system based on the optics. The camera only captures the shot, the lens draws it.

The best camera is the one you have on you and limitations help with creativity. Learn how to do the settings on the camera to make the pic look different from auto mode and see what results you can get.

Post is for making adjustments it's like the car is built but your slapping paint and some shiny wheels on it, the car could look good without those things the rest is stylistic choices.

Just go for a wander outside, take some pictures you won't know what you like to photograph or how to frame things until you just start, learn about the rule of threes, use your phone to start if you want, get a used camera from a pawn brokers, Craigslist or some shit.

An entry level dslr with kit lens has enough range for any novice

This. Just try a bunch of different shit in different situations and see what works for you. That's how I figured out that I like doing long exposure pics and how to make them come out alright (I think, anyway) for having been taken on my phone. Like the one here >>4451382
