You can bait birds with like seeds and mealworms and such but I’ve seen some boomer arguments that this produces boring birds. I guess when a bird is being baited all it does is go eat and they don’t really do other behaviours or something like that. A lot of times they’ll make a whole fake perch, like stick a solid branch into the ground and smear some food on it. Again, the boomers debate about whether this is β€œreal” same as we debate about all the other bullshit we do here

I just wear camo clothes, doesnt have to be actual camo, just something that blends in, not too colorful. You will usually find more species by some body water. Then I just sit, wait, and observe. If nothing happens in 5-10 minutes, I move. You need a lot of patience.

Great shot!
I'm lucky enough to live by an adubon IBA. You should at least be able to see some cool birds, the hiding and waiting is how you get close to them. You might just be in the wrong spot. Look on ebird or inaturalist for hotspots nearby, or looking up your local adubon society and seeing if they mention anywhere, and visiting right before the sun comes up for best chances.
I consider bait unethical in sensitive habitats such as these but a backyard feeder is of course fine. The tip here is to pose an aesthetic branch near the feeder in a convenient spot and take the photo there.
Good luck and have fun!

yeah the higher end stuff gets pretty expensive. if your main focus is photography don't spend so much, at max spend ~500€ (the most competitive binocular price class), but you can get a good pair for around 100€ as well.

if you wear glasses, make sure you get enough eye relief, mine have 17mm which seems just about enough, previous one's had 15,7mm and it was too little.

if you want suggestions, give me your budget

Can your lens take a sharp picture in controlled conditions?
Can you take a stuffed animal and get a sharp picture of it right now?
Most cameras and most lenses can take a sharp picture in SOME conditions.

If you can't then you need to evaluate why. You need to up your shutter speed to at least the zoom you're shooting at, even if the subject isn't moving your camera is moving in your hand. In Body Image Stabilization and Lens Stabilization only help so much and the further away the subject the blurrier it will get. Depending on the available light you might have to crank the ISO beyond acceptable limits and just accept that the picture will come out noisy so that you can keep the shutter speed up high enough. You should also try manual mode with focus peaking to see if the problem is the autofocus behavior of your specific camera/lens combo. Play with autofocus settings until you get better results.

That Tamron 70-300 will not be much better than that kit telezoom, it is essentially a Tamron version of the generic kit telezoom. Get a 70-200/2.8 if you want super sharp and generic use or get more money for a proper supertele like a Sony 200-600 or a Sigma 150-600 or similar

sharpness is subjective there is no such thing as "right" and darktable has about seven different methods you can adjust an image's sharpness with from big blur to extra crispy. However, if you resize an image during export, sharpness is not reapplied at that time and this can cause issues but if you're resizing at export its likely for somewhere that nobody is going to be pixel peeping anyways such as instagram. Its especially not important if you're printing 5x7s or 4x6s of your work.

Just seeing birds in general, rare or not. I mostly enjoy observing their behaviour.
I've been more into landscape photography at first but bird photography is a way to join the two hobbies, I also like sharing these images and memories with my fellow birders and for future me too. Plus photography and live observation aren't giving the same results, photos allow to scrutinise a particular pose, plumage or behaviour for a longer time and with more details. Observation is better for dynamics (more varied stuff to watch) and less of a hassle too, but it's fleeting by nature.

sell your equipment
Anonymous No.4462524
Taking pictures at a stupidly long distance with cheap equipment and getting surprised when they don't turn out good at all :-D
Grey Heron(?) was nice to see, though. People said there was a Hobby or two in the area but boats coming down the river scared everything off, I think.

That is a white breasted nuthatch. They are very cute and chatty. And hard to photograph, nice job. My pic is not very good but a different nuthatch, we have red breasted here.

Motherfucker.
I was approaching a puddle in a park and there was this shiny blue thing sitting on a branch above it. I assumed it was a candy wrapper or something, until it flew off like a rocket. It must have been a kingfisher, I can't think of anything else with such an unnatural looking shiny blue appearance. Fuck me for not checking it out through the camera.

Isn't the evf turning off annoying when you're tracking birds, waiting for them to approach? It's something that would prevent me from switching tbqh

yea i hope at least the lack of the flappy mirror and shutter will tolerate my addiction to burst shooting better

yea you just gotta jiggle something or keep afc active, it can lag sometimes too which is annoying. Maybe not lag, but drop to like 10fps refresh. just doesnt feel nice

Soon they'll migrate away, but been fun following them for a few weeks (when I heard about them).

You fellas using af or mf? I'm looking at some 400mm Sigma prime lens and the manual ones are half the price, and way easier to find
Anonymous No.4464836 >>4464847

Actually I may aswell ask aswell, the 400mms im looking at are f5.6. There's also a mf Sigma 300mm f4 prime for sale. Is 400mm a noticeable step up from 300mm for taking bird pics?
Anonymous No.4464847

definetly AF
half the point of the fancy new cameras is AF speed, it matters alot for birding

>>4464836
400mm is a noticable step up imo
its only after 600mm where it gets negible

I've used nothing but 300mm prime this year. Go for optical quality and speed over focal length, f/5-6.7 is very suboptimal.
