Please critique me. I am an amateur photographer, looking to get better. Here is a still life I took photos of today.

You gotta appreciate OP's effort for this.

Anon these fruits, vegetables and cheese should be in semi rotten state and filled with worms and shit. Your lazy ass has just taken few bites out of it. Your staging of these objects is shit. Also find a nice old wooden table and use yellow light like classical painting.

Ditto copy your favorite Vanitas paintings. Just copy everything and also its aesthetics, mimick it as best as you can and when you understand the process try to add in your own ideas. You will learn more that way. Also you need deep focus(meaning everything has to be in focus within your frame).

It needs more refinement in every aspect. Simplify it down to only 3 or 4 elements to start with. I would also suggest that you start in b&w so you can focus more on composition, lighting, and the finer details required to make a good still life.

The background + 7 elements feels very claustrophobic. Background also feels sloppy or lacking attention to detail. Like the other anon said you should really have everything in focus aside from your background.

I tried a wooden table and B&W last time. I preferred these new colour shots instead. But thank you both for your critiques.

This one looks so much better than the coloured ones. But seeing the OP colour photos i believe the black and white looks good but that you didn’t do it on purpose, b&w simply is forgiving.
As others have said, the still life is bad. Subject and arrangement lacks composition.
Light is soft but ends up looking unintentional.
Copy the masters

To expand a bit. Get all your subjects as much in focus as you can with your focal length. Having the head in the op image out of focus isn’t nice. Get the light to be intentional on your subject and not spill all over the place just because it’s nice. Try other angles as to isolate or put your subject in the center place of the viewers gaze. In the op pic it’s just all over the place and looks like you randomly held up your hand to snap a pic of a table with shit on it. As another post also said, get better subjects or rearrange them better.

Thank you very much for the critique. It's helped immensely. I tried to put the colour photos in black and white, but, as you say, the depth of field and focus isn't right, nor is the composition. I need one, singular hard light to make this still life, and more interesting subjects, but I will have to save up for that.

>but I will have to save up for that.
In the meantime buy a good old yellow bulb and use household items to nail the techniques. Look up light cutting/control methods in cinematography.

I waited for the core to rot like you asked, but I don't particularly like it.

That's the first good photo in this thread.
I just don't understand why you added pubes on top of the rotten apple core?
Anonymous No.4472611 [Report] >>4472613
>>4472608
Why is a center framed and overly vignetted apple core with random shit above it a good picture?
Anonymous No.4472613 [Report] >>4472696
>>4472611
To me, there's something unsettling about it. I shitted on the random pubes, but they actually add to this fact. I know it's a rotted apple core, but with the B&W it becomes more ambiguous. What is it made of? The bottom looks like some sort of open animalistic maw. The flesh - is it really just rotten fruit or something worse?
It's entirely subjective, but seriously, this image evokes an emotional response from me. The others were just random objects arranged by an unskilled hand.

These are quite good op, I was listening to led zeppelin while looking at them and suddenly got a vision of these same still life’s but with tomato sauce drizzled over everything. The symbolism alone yet alone the splash of red would really add something.

And I agree with you. That photo is extremely disgusting and unsettling. I think that's what OP wanted to achieve with that photo. It got an emotional response from me so it surely worked.
