You need to find a branch right above the water on which they like to stay, observe where they stop. These branches often have birb poop on them.
Then get under the cover of a nearby patch of trees/bushes, or in a special tent if you've got the gear. Stay quiet and hidden for a while and you'll get your shot, that's how I took this one. If they spot you they might stop for a split second and fly away directly, in which case you'll need a better concealment.

I was out at a beach 5 minutes from where I live doing some tests, and suddenly a woman appeared next to me sneaking around in the reeds. She was packing some big lens and started talking to me about some bird that had been spotted there. I said I did not know anything about that, and then she left soon after.

Just spent a couple of hours applying my own advice, the kingfishers kept zooming left and right but stayed away. Of course the moment I removed my camera from the tripod, turned it off and folded my lens, that fucker came on a branch 7 metres away from me, and fucked off as soon as I could get all my stuff ready again. Fucking kingfishers, why do birds ALWAYS come at the worst times and have to show us how much of a bunch of losers we are?

full manual auto iso. You're gonna push it to what it needs to be later anyways. You wind up fighting for light a lot doing this, birds be up at dawn and dusk. So mentally i just try to think what can i reasonable drop my shutter to safely, is it bright enough to tighten up here to get a better chance of getting deadeye focus. shooting at 500mm on a target the size of a tennis ball your dof is pretty thin even at f8

left side tripod collar also good for mounting strap cuz it wont block your viewfinder when you need to bring camera to eye fast

Anything particular you have in mind? I lighten the shadows a good bit to deal with the bird being backlit,m but I guess selective lightening it (and maybe the post too) to further undo the backlight would be an idea. Darken the background, or perhaps a bit of an added vignetting?

I'd actually appreciate if it became a more generic wildlife thread, since lots of the gear and techniques overlap so it's mostly the same thing.
It's fine having a niche thread on a slow board, I just think there'd be more to post. I guess /rpt/ gets the leftover wildlife stuff.

one jumped in front of my car today out of nowhere, like 5 meters away. at least it was on a tiny road going 30km/h so he didn't need to die yet.
moose are very active also, and I saw four in total last week while driving, one relatively close call.
>>4471901

I'm glad we don't have them in western Europe, they look dangerous as fuck. We still have quite a lot of boars and deers which can be lethal for cars.
I'm lucky since the worst I've encoutered so far was coming close to hitting a deer and a badger. But then again I haven't been living in the countryside for a very long time. Still hit a young robin this summer, that made me sad.

Is this much bokeh desired in birding? It doesn’t appeal to me. I understand bokeh helps isolate the subject but in nature photography do you not want the surrounding environment as well?
I feel like when I’ve looked at NatGeo and BBC photography, it’s typically lacking bokeh. Everything around the subject is in clear focus.

I take a cheap telephoto zoom on my crop sensor when I go hiking... the equivalent aperture is extreme, but when I can actually get close to the subject and the bg isn't too busy I do like the results and the context it provides, for example the burn markings on this shot (sorry not a birb). That said sandpiperfriend's shots are tasteful compared to a lot of shit I see, you can absolutely buy your way out of taking shots that require forethought about what's in the bg.
