unfortunately in most times and places, getting close simply doesn't work. the spacing of people tends to be wide enough that if you suddenly approach, people will stop doing whatever it was that they were doing which you wanted to photograph and look at you. so you can't really force that closeness any old time. nor should you have only close shots, because that would become tiresome and repetitive. but mixing one in here and there will strengthen your body of work. so i'm not saying to always shoot close. but if you never do, then it will be obvious that you don't really mean it. if even you who was at the scene didn't care enough about the shot to put something on the line for it, why would i care about said shot as a viewer?
